Table 17.2 Two Things the University Should Do To Improve Safety on Campus (N=93) Multiple responses from 93 of 95 (97.9%) students who completed the questionnaire

Page 16: EXCERPTS for the Safety Audit Committee Preliminary Summary Report Campus Safety Awareness:

How to improve safety needs? What students said…

• More visible emergency lights (e.g., flashing lights, visible location).

• Place emergency number on campus phone at CAW• Road safety - Improve safety at intersection for visually

impaired students, and control speed on California• Walksafe program – extend p.m. hours, phone number

on key chain, revise pick up locations• Training for RAs to deal with emergencies and

counselling distressed students during off hours• Campus safety promotion is important – use multiple

means – both traditional and digital

Page 17: EXCERPTS for the Safety Audit Committee Preliminary Summary Report Campus Safety Awareness:

Summary• Most unsafe time – 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. • Priority groups for campus promotion – young and on

campus students• More on campus students than on campus students were

aware of campus services and were feeling unsafe • More off campus than on campus students perceived

safety is a concern.• Only 26% (n=53) reported safety incidents to campus

police. • Brief interventions (safety displays & slogan contest) did

not yield significance in safety knowledge gained. Need ongoing and multiple way to instill safety culture on campus

• Collaboration among campus partners to promote safety for all students

• Ongoing monitoring and evaluation needed
