The site is a historic dump, consisting mainly of household items and building materials, and is located on the top of a hill in an open pasture. Ten subsurface tests were dug, all testing positive for artifacts. These historic arti- facts included various fragments of different colored glass including flat, curved, clear, green, blue, aqua and opaque. Large mammal bone fragments were also found--some of which were burnt. Pieces of wire fencing, bricks, wood, nails, metal fragments, ceramic, brown slat glazed ceramic, transfer printed ceramic, cream colored crockery, clinkers, coal, whiteware, bottlecaps, a part of a blue insulator, and a partial cinder block were also discovered. A few of the notable artifacts included the AC OCHS Springfield brick and a BULLOCK WARD & CO CHICAGO USA tincture bottle. The AC OCHS Springfield brick was made by the Springfield Brick Works, which was owned by Adolph Casimir Ochs, who lived from 1857 to 1939 (Marquis, 1908, pp. 383). “Mr. A. C. Ochs, propri- etor of the Springfield Brick Yards, at Springfield, Minn., is one of the best known and most enter- prising and successful clayworkers of that state. He has been engaged in brick manufacture for eighteen years, and before he entered the business was a contractor and builder for twenty years. . . . The Springfield Brick Yards turns out all kinds of common brick, hollow build- ing block, drain-tile and wire-cut face brick”( Minnesota Bricks Exploring Historical Brickmaking in Minnesota , 2009) (Kenfield-Leach Company, 1908, pp. 295). The BULLOCK WARD & CO CHICAGO U.S.A. tincture bottle would have had a paper on the non-em- bossed side that stated: “B.W.BRAND PURE OR- ANGE FLAVORING EXTRACT FOR FLAVORING ICE CREAM, CAKES, PUDDINGS, CUSTARDS, JELLIES, SAUCES, SYRUPS, ETC. DOUBLE STRENGTH, ABSOLUTE PURITY, TRUE FLAVOR MADE BY BULLOCK WARD & CO. CHICAGO in purple and green label on sunken back panel” (Worth- Point, 2018).

July 2018 PROJECT NEWS: Estelline Telecommunications Tower Quality Services, Inc. just completed research and inventory of approximately 0.30 acres in Hamlin County on behalf of Terracon Communications, who will be placing a telecommunications tower in this vicinity. The site is a historic dump, consisting mainly of household items and building materials, and is located on the top of a hill in an open pasture. Ten subsurface tests were dug, all testing positive for artifacts. These historic arti-facts included various fragments of different colored glass including flat, curved, clear, green, blue, aqua and opaque. 383). “Mr. A. C. Community Connections Principal Investigator Jana Morehouse has been keeping busy volunteering with the Oglala Pet Project (OPP). She can be found helping at the OPP tent at the local farmer’s market, assisting in the spay/neuter clinics that they host throughout the year in Kyle, SD, and she loves being foster mom when the need arises. She estimates that she has fostered 72 cats since she started in October 2015. Quality Services, Inc. has been a proud sponsor of their largest fundraising event- Sip Stay Sit- a fun evening involving many of the animals, a silent auction, and wine tasting. Jana helps organize this event and also serves on the OPP Board.

I picked Mark after he met me through the nice people at Oglala Pet Project (with quite a bit of help from Jana). That was almost a year ago! I still am a little anxious (and a little barky) when I meet new people, but I love them all (and their treats!) once I get to know them. My favorites are going to work with Mark, and then to the dog park to chase sticks and balls and splash in the creek! I also love playing with other dogs, but especially Woodie!

Ben Snow, President of the Rapid City Economic Development Partnership (EDP), swung into the office this month to give us more information on how the EDP benefits not only the Rapid City community but also small businesses like Quality Services, Inc. (QSI). Snow states that the EDP tends to be a “behind-the-scenes” public-private partnership, providing confidentiality to businesses currently in Rapid City wanting to expand, as well as to businesses looking to get started in the community. Because of their public-private partnership, they are able to build leverage for businesses, fos-tering healthy and sustainable growth, and assisting small businesses find resources that will be beneficial to them. Their current five-year economic development campaign, Elevate Rapid City, is a joint venture of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, Ellsworth Development Authority, Rapid City Economic Development Partnership and the Economic Development Foundation. The goal of Elevate Rapid City is to “elevate” the quality of life and quality of em-ployment opportunities within the entire Black Hills region. One of the innovative tools they are working on is a work-force-community portal, to help those seeking employees or employers not only advertise opportunities, but also expand upon the perks of living in this area! Snow states that Rapid City’s “Geographic Value Proposition” is truly one of location. Twenty years ago, our small economic stature and isolation was our biggest downfall. Now, however, because of strong telecommunications and the ability to connect globally from any computer, our small stature is what is drawing both employers and employees to this beautiful region. His best advice for small businesses today? “Continue to sell the Black Hills and Rapid City to your client base. Bringing your clients closer brings your business and other businesses closer, and attracts more of the em-ployees that you want and need,” said Snow. Staff members Elena Houk and Mark Carpenter recently took part in a 22k walk benefiting Mission22, an organization helping veterans fight suicide. Elena said, “The 22k Hike for Heroes is a great reason to think about those we should never forget and spend time with friends.” In addition to our staff’s involvements, many organizations in the community helped and hiked, including the Rapid City Rush.
