Common Core Standard Goals for The Pattern Box®

Grade 2.OA 2 F luent ly add and subtract with in 20 us ing menta l s trategies. By the end of grade 2, know f rom memory a l l sums of two one-d igi t numbers.

The sums to 20 are mastered in two major chunks: the sums with in 10 and the sums within and to the teens. At grades 1 and 2 the “Yel low Levels” address sums to 10. The “Blue Levels” address sums within and to the teens. The kindergarten red and yel low levels provide the necessary foundation in al ignment with the Common Core Standards for mastery of this essential standard.

The Pattern Box ® Students from kindergarten to grade 5 love the Pattern Box® because they see themselves improve and succeed. The levels advance incrementally to bring students to the next rung of their “math ladder.” Under the auspices of a well‐planned teacher, each student is encouraged to joyfully own their learning and do their personal best. Because of the wide variance of performance levels within any math classroom, this attitude is indispensable. Students must develop metacognitive skills and consciously work with perseverance for their own progress and understanding. 

The Pattern Box® is a brief differentiated activity, a small but essential part of a larger fluency program in the classroom. It allows each student to systematically work at his/her own level in the acquisition of basic facts.
