Ken Welch, SIMSOLID Chief Executive OfficerKen is cofounder and CEO at SIMSOLID. Ken holds a Bachelors and Masters in Engineering from the University of California, Davis, and has worked in CAE for over 30 years. Ken has had previous roles as VP strategy for MSC Software and COO of Moldflow as well as various product management roles at Autodesk, Rasna Corporation and PDA Engineering.
The Geometry Problem
The geometry of CAD and FEA are DifferentDisparity between CAD and FEA geometry models needlessly
complicates the analysis user paradigm and is the primary inhibitor blocking wider adoption of FEA in driving design workflows
The Geometry Problem Creates Complexity
• Complexity in defeaturing, midplaning, geometry editing & cleanup
• Complexity in meshing• Complexity in load creation and application• Complexity in solving
All steps require many judgment calls, are labor-intensive, error prone and often requires experts in both simulation and CAD
The SIMSOLID SolutionReinvent the process of structural simulation1. Provides a direct connection to Onshape cloud documents2. Eliminates the need for CAD model simplification from structural analysis
workflows3. Eliminates meshing from structural analysis workflows4. Provides adaptive analysis to control solution accuracy5. Provides smart connectors to make assembly modeling easier and more
robust6. Provides superior performance metrics for computation time and memory
footprint7. Operates simply and efficiently as a lightweight desktop app
Benefit 1 - Process Improvement

Simplify Geometry Create Mesh Setup Analysis Solve Interpret Results
SIMSOLID eliminates the two most time consuming and expertise extensive tasks of geometry simplification and meshing
Benefit 2 – Changing What’s Solvable
FEA
SIMSOLID
Incorporate Large Assemblies and Complex Geometry
Application Example
Analysis of Large Assemblies• Large assembly
– 153 parts with varying thickness and size
– Large and small scale parts– Thin walled tubular components– Complex floor grate– Bolted and welded connections
• Direct from CAD– CAD geometry analyzed unaltered – All part connections
auto-generated– Import, model & solve in under 14
minutes on desktop Core i7
• Solution not practical in current FEA systems
Application Example
Eliminates Part Geometry Cleanup
Application Example
Eliminates Part Geometry Simplification• Telescope housing
complex machined base plate
• 1,200+ faces, 150+ small holes
• Solves in 4-minon desktop Core i7
• Solution not practical in current FEA systems
