Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA)

What is new about the MA findings?

[…] “the focus of this assessment on ecosystem services and their link to human well-being and development needs is unique. […] “

Has the MA identified major gaps in knowledge?

[…] “Yes, many. For example, at a local and national scale, relatively limited information exists about the status of many ecosystem services and even less information is available about the economic value of non-marketed services. Moreover, the costs of the depletion of these services are rarely tracked in national economic accounts. […] “

Council Regulation on support for rural deve-lopment by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD)

• BfN-Publication (BfN-Skript Nr. 253) gives a comprehensive overview about the agri-environmental measures in all federal state rural development programs (in German only, www.bfn.de/0502_skripten.html).

• High potentials for advanced supporting of functional agrobiodiversity through improvement of the measures.

AEM

A variety of AEM has been evolved in the EU. Examples of commitments covered are: (i) the environmentally favorable extensification of farming; (ii) the management of low-intensity pasture systems; (iii) integrated farm management and organic agriculture; (iv) the preservation of landscape and historical features such as hedgerows, ditches and woods or (v) the conservation of high-value habitats and their associated biodiversity.
