Examination Study Guide
Key English Study Strategies:
In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics:
• Reading and understanding the class text “The Eagle of the Ninth”
• Narrative structure – how the novel is constructed
• Character description and development – particularly focused on Marcus or Esca
• Descriptive writing - setting
• Descriptive writing - emotion
• Reflecting on their own learning in this unit “Loyalty and Duty”
It is suggested that students use/access the following resources:

Students should practise writing in character as directed by their class teacher.

Examination Study Guide
Key History Study Strategies:
• Complete any missed classwork.
• Re-read the relevant chapters in your online textbook.
• Answer any questions in the online textbook that you have not yet completed and show your responses to
your class teacher for feedback.
• Revise your essay-writing technique (PEEL – Point, Explanation, Evidence, Link) and ensure that you are able
to write in sufficient detail.
• Create a learning summary using the dot-points listed above as a guide – you can use flashcards, create
mind maps and flowcharts, create study notes, etc.
In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics:
• Methods of Historical Investigation:
- outline the main features of history and archaeology
- describe and explain the different approaches to historical investigation taken by archaeologists and
historians
- define the terms and concepts relating to historical time, including BC/AD, BCE/CE
- identify the difference between Primary and Secondary sources and explain how each is useful to
historical investigation
• Ancient Rome:
- outline how ancient Roman society was organised and governed including the roles of law and religion
- describe the roles of key groups and individuals within ancient Roman society, e.g. the emperor, the
nobility, the senate, citizens, soldiers, women and slaves
- describe the everyday life of men, women and children in the ancient Rome

1. Always revise your work daily, weekly and then do a major review one week before your exam.
2. Once an exam is announced:
- Construct a list of topics to review
- Find specific problems for each topic on your list
- Make your list long enough to provide enough practice for mastery
3. You must master all the topics on your list before you work on any practice tests.
4. You may have to practice some types of problems over and over again until you can work them in less
time.
5. Analyse your homework problems, practice tests and past exams. Note the typical errors you usually make
– Give yourself more practice in these areas.
It is suggested that students use/access the following resources:
• Study Guide program and accompanying Revision Booklets
• Past topic tests and solutions
• Work Plans and work book exercises – especially chapter reviews (end of chapter)

Course Specific Criteria
This examination is designed to allow you to show your understanding and comprehension of the materials
covered by class work, homework and practical work. The content being examined covers topics including:
Enough Water Fit to Drink, Circle of Life (Ecosystems only) and Forces, as well as Science skills.

• An examination of 50 minutes
• This examination consists of 15 Multiple Choice questions and short answer questions which could include
such questions as defining, describing and explaining, as well as drawing diagrams and applying knowledge
and skills, etc.
• All answers are to be written on the examination paper
