As we progress towards the end of our first semester at Delview, we wanted to send home someclarification and information regarding school exams, provincial exams and the calendar for the week of January 26 31, 2009.

On Thursday, Jan. 22 and Friday, Jan. 23 we will be running an altered schedule to allow for in-class final exams (school exams) to occur. These two days will consist of two class periods each 2 hourslong and will also include time for an optional tutorial before each class. While the timetable is altered for these two days, the expectation is that all students will be in session in their classes regardless of whether an exam has been scheduled or other class activities are taking place. Please be aware that students arenot to be in the halls during the exam times, the cafeteria and library will be open for students to work, complete assignments and prepare for tests.

The following week, Jan. 26 th through Jan. 30 th has been set aside for the provincial examschedule and for I week. Most grade 8 and grade 9 students will not have classes or exams during this

period and should not be in attendance. Grade 10, 11 and 12 students need only attend for their scheduledexams please see the attached schedule. Students who are not presently passing their classes may bedirected to attend during the week of Jan. 26 th to Jan. 30 th. During this time teachers will be available towork with the students and provide them sufficient opportunities such that the student may recover thisclass and move from an I standing to a passing grade.

All grade 10 provincial exams as well as Social Studies 11 and English 12 are required exams, students must write these exams and pass these courses to be eligible for graduation.

For students contemplating whether to write the optional grade 12 provincial exams, thefollowing information may be of use to them as they carefully consider this decision.

Universities in BC are no longer requiring students to write the provincial exams for entrance to the university. Should a student elect to write the provincial exam, theuniversity will take the higher grade, either the school mark alone or the combinedschool plus exam mark.

Should a student write a provincial exam, the grade for the Ministry of Education for graduation - will be the combined mark of the class mark (60%) and the exam mark (40%) If the student elects not to write the optional exam, the school mark then

becomes the full course grade for the Ministry of Education. Provincial scholarships are based solely on the exam results. Without writing the provincial exams students are not eligible for these scholarships. A score of 86% or better on each of three provincial exams will ensure a provincial scholarship of $1000.00. This may include English 12 with scholarship standing based on the students

best three results on the provincial exams.

Student Course SchedulesStudent course schedules for semester 2 will be distributed on Wednesday Jan. 21 st. Please check

these schedules carefully. Our counselors will have scheduled times available during the exam week (Jan26 30) for students who have an error in their timetable or have failed a class and need to reschedule.Students seeking a course change may also book an appointment but please be aware that students with

course conflicts will take priority. Course schedules were created based on student selections spread over both semesters, making course changes for the second is very difficult and many classes are full.
