Preface
Twelve yea rs after publi shing Pathfinder in Korean , the first do mestically made Korean lang uage
tex tbook based on communica tive prac ti ce, Ewha Lang uage Center at Ewha Womans Unive r sity has
now released a new textbook titled Ewha Korean. Over the past ten years Pathfinder in Korean h as been
w idely used as a Korean language tex tbook in many countries aro llnd the world and is still prized as a
useful guide fo r beginners to the Korean language. Under the be!ief that a new textbook was ca lled for to
meet the needs of changing times, how ever, Ewha Language Center began development of Ewha Korean
in 2008. The project gained momentum w hen it was selected for funding under the Ministry of Education ,
Sc ience and Technology’s program to provide sllpport for Korean language training in 2009. Ove r the
past year the textbook was tested , revised, and tested again through actual use in the classroom at Ewha
Language Center before coming up with the fjnal version. The Ewha Korean series consists o f 26 volllmes
including textbooks and workbooks, covering six levels, and w ill be published in stages
Ewha Korean is a comprehensive textbook covering the four sk ills o f speaking, li stening, read ing,
and w riting with related content throughout all levels. While fostering balanced development of the fo ur
language skill s, the new textbook is designed with an emphasis on speaking ability. The “ Try it" section in
each chapter is designed to encourage students to improve their conversation skills without memori zation
by creating their own dialogue according to a given situation and explanation o f the flow o f the dialogue
and vocabulary. In addition , taking into consideratio n the demands and preferences expressed by
stlldents, levels 1 to 3 consist of two books each, and in levels 1 and 2 the instrllctions and expl anatio ns
are given in Eng lish, )apanese, 0 1' Chinese.
On behalf o f Ewha Langllage Center, 1 extend my sincere thanks to the allthors of the book for theiI
passion and dedication. 1 also w ish to express my appreciation to Professors Hai-yo ung Lee, YOllng-kyll
Kim , Hy ung-yong Choi , and SlIn-hee Park for their assistance in o rganizing the content, and Professor
Hyun-ja Kim for her advice in regard to the literatllre sections of the book. Many thanks also go to Ewha
Womans University Press fo r ed iting and publication o f the book
[t is my hope that Ewha Korean w ill b e w idely used inside and o lltside the country as a Korean
language

How many people around the world use the Korean language?
Korean is the official language of the Republic of Korea and is used by ap
proximately 78 million people around the world . Korean is the 12th widely used
language in the world . This means Korean falls be
hind Chinese. 5panish. and English but is ahead of
Italian and French
world are learning the Korean language thanks
largely to increased cultural exchange resulting from
the popularity of Korean pop culture. a phenomenon
called Hallyu () . Hence the role of Korean TV dramas. movies. and music has
become importan t. In addition. a growing number of people from different parts
of the world are learning Korean to work or study in Korea.
How and when was Hangeul invented?
The Korean alphabet is called Hangeu l. It was invented in 1443 by King 5e
jong . the fourth monarch of Joseon. and the scholars of Jiphyeonjeon (The
Academy of Worthies). Before Hangeul. Korean was written in Chinese charac
ters. which were difficult for the ordinary people to learn. but with the invention
of Hangeul Koreans were finally able to easily write down their own thoughts

King Sejong Hunminjeongeum Various Hangeul font (Correct Sounds to Instruct the people)
The consonants were designed based on pictographic pri iples and the ad
dition of strokes. The five basic consonants (' . L 0 . 0 ) follow the shape of
the speech organs as they make the sound while the remainder were made by
adding strokes to the basic consonants

The vowels are a combination of the symbols ‘ • ’ , ‘-’. and ‘ l ’ which repre
sent heaven. the earth. and human beings (standing up) respectively. All vow
els are composed of these three elements.
How are the Korean characters composed?
As a syllabic script Hangeul is composed of consonants and vowels. Modern
Hangeul consists of 40 letters. 19 consonants and 21 vowels.

Each Hangeul character is a syllabic block made up of both consonants and
vowels. A consonant is found in the initial and the final position of the character
and a vowel in the medial position. The ordering of consonants and vowels is
indi ca ted in the diagram below

Vowels are either vert ical in shape or horizonta l. The vertical ones are r. Þ. ~. ~ . 1 and the consonant is placed on the left hand side. The horizontal ones

Syllables A vowel composes a syllable. When there is no consonant in the
initial position 01 a syllabic block , the letter ‘ ’ is used as a filler,
whi ch has no sound. Therelore , ‘’ is pronounced the same as
the vowel ‘ 1 ’

There are 19 consonants in Hangeu l. 14 simple consonants and 5 double con
sonants. They must be used in combination with vowels to complete a syllable
and as such consonants have no sound on their own. Consonants can change in
sound to resemble another depending on the vowel that follows or its posit ion
in the syllabic block.

Korean sentences are composed of ‘subject + verb ’ or ‘subject + object + verb. ’
Th e subject is indi ca ted by the subject marker and the object is indicated
by the object marker or Sometimes the order of subject and object in a sen
tence is reversed. and in situations where the subject can be surmised it is often
omitted.
5ubject object verb
The verb takes on various forms in th e sentence. The verb form s are com
posed of a verb stem and an ending . For example. meaning 'to go’ IS com
posed of the stem - and the ending Other endings are used to produce
forms such as to express honor
if ic use. tense. and mood. The ri ch variety of word stems and endings is a dis
tinct ive fea ture of the Korean language.

In Korean families names are only used when speaking to someO r:l e younger than . or junior to yourself. For example. whe l) parents call their son they call him ‘| ’ But when talking to someone older than ‘ and superior to yourself. the right kinshìp ter rT) should be used . For example . a younger ‘ male ~ibling will call an older brother ‘ ’ and an older s.ister ‘’ while a younger female sibling will call an older brother ‘’ and an older sister ‘’. When introducing family members to someone else. Koreans don ’t usually say ‘my father ’ or ‘my slster’ (‘ ’ or ‘
’ ) but ‘our father ’ or ‘our slster’ ( ‘ ’ or ‘ ’).
