eWaveMD Telemedicine Case Study:Remote Virtual Consultation in a Rural Environment

The ChallengeThe State of Orissa is located on the east coast of India and has a population of almost 40 million people. The Government of Orissa strives to provide adequate health care for its population – catering to the health needs in rural areas, especially the poor and marginalized groups such as women and the vulnerable sections of society.

The SolutionOTTET, a local NGO, established India’s first community-centric program to provide preventive healthcare and disease management via telemedicine. OTTET naturally approached eWaveMD, as a leader in telemedicine solutions, to deploy the infrastructure for this project. The outcome was a partnership between eWaveMD and OTTET for the implementation of the VCP.

In the initial stage, eWaveMD installed its e-Health platform in 30 villages, using a modern ICT platform and network. The program is managed by local non-medical technicians. Primary medical tests are performed in a simple and efficient manner, within the village, at any time, day or night.

Support is provided by a professional network (nurses, general practitioners, and specialists), offering two-way video and audio conferencing, and full access to test results, and medical files.

The BenetsOTTET’s program has already delivered the following visible benefits:

Reduction in transportation costs of patients to remote medical units

Increase in general well being of the population

Extending access to integrated primary health care

Connecting remote clinics with hospitals for consultation

Promotion of healthy life styles

Creation of employment
