Core Map Collection 1: Ewart Map Collection

About the collection:

The Ewart Map Collection (c. 1567-1896), is a collection of 168 original maps and facsimiles of printed and manuscript

maps of Ireland. The collection was originally assembled by Belfast collector and linen merchant, Lavens M. Ewart J.

P. (1845-1898). It was formally presented to Queen's University in 1954 by Ewart's grandchildren, Dr. Vivian

Lutwyche, Dr. Violet Lutwyche, and Miss Lenore Dawson. A number of complementary maps have been added to the

collection since the original deposit.

The collection is comprised of 4 main categories and can be broken down as follows: 44 maps of Ireland; 36 provincial

and county maps within Ireland; 19 individual place maps within Ireland; and 69 maps and plans of Belfast. This

collection houses notable entries from Gerardus Mercator, John Speed, Willem Blaeu, William Petty, and Daniel

Augustus Beaufort. It boasts a wide assortment of maps including facsimiles of ancient maps, sea charts, OS sheets,

municipal maps and plans, and siege maps.

The maps have been measured in centimetres (height x width) using the neatline. Please use these measurements

only as a guideline as the neatline is frequently skewed and the map content often protrudes beyond it– this has been

noted below where applicable. There are maps and plans with no defined neatline– where this occurs, the map area

has been measured and recorded.

This listing uses original map titles (italicised in the item description), or titles derived from the maps where possible.

The dates used are directly taken from the maps where available (and are often the original dates), as are

cartographer and map publications details. The listing below has attempted to represent the scales used in the maps–

note that these are often approximate or difficult to decipher, and should be used only as a guideline. The information

taken from the maps also includes any errors in the physical documents.

Digital Special Collections & Archives provides online access to a selection of maps from the Ewart Map Collection.
