ROSS The water is serene, but the air is a tempest of whistles, barks, clicks, trills and perhaps a croak. A female red-eyed tree frog crouches on the shore. She listens, motionless on the bank,

Ross Three Roll Mills are among the most popular for research and development and laboratory purposes. Three standard sizes are available, Models 52M 21/2 x 5", 4 x 8" and 5 x 12". The rolls of each unit are precision ground and are

available in both steel and stainless steel construction. Rolls are cored and can be supplied with optional rotary pressure joints for heating or cooling purposes. Mills are usually available from stock. Larger mills available upon request.

Ross manufactures two unique Motionless Mixers. The LPD, which is used for low viscosity turbulent flow mixing, and the ISG, which is primarily used for high viscosity laminar flow mixing.

The LPD Mixer consists of a series of semielliptical plates which are discriminately positioned in a tubular housing. The mixing operation is based on splitting and then diverting input streams. In turbulent flow, the elements enhance the random dispersion of substreams thus an LPD with six elements

is sufficient for most low viscosity mixing requirements.

The ISG Mixer consists of mixing elements shaped such that adjacent elements form a tetrahedral chamber.

Four holes bored through each element provide the flow paths. If two input streams enter an ISG mixer, the number of layers emerging from the first, second, and third elements are 8, 32, 128. This exponential progression generates over two million layers in just 10 elements.

The Ross Turboemulsifier is a highly specialized multi-agitator mixer with many applications in the Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Industries.

The Turboemulsifier consists of three top-entering coaxial agitators including an anchor-agitator with self-adjusting Teflon scrapers, internal counter-rotating blades, and a central toothed rotor/stator type homogenizing turbine.

The thorough mixing action of the counter-rotating blades combined with the extremely high shear rate of the turbine, have made the Turboemulsifier highly successful in producing cosmetics and pharmaceuticals such as toothpaste, mascara, suppositories and emusion-based creams and ointments.

Turboemulsifiers are available with vacuum and heating/cooling systems installed, in sizes from 10 to 4000 liters capacity.

VERSAMIXThe Ross VersaMix is a proven multi agitator mixer designed to meet the rapidly changing requirements of today's major process industries. VersaMix units are tailored to suit the individual process demands of customers manufacturing products that range from low to high viscosity consistencies. This is possible by selecting the best combination of the three agitation systems offered with this unit. Standard sizes are available from a 2 gallon laboratory size through a large 4000 gallon production model. A wide selection of drives for the various component mixers and many optional

features are offered for each machine. Applications are extensive in the adhesives, cosmetics, chemical, food, pharmaceutical and plastics industries. The Ross change can design also multiplies productivity, by allowing you to simply roll a second vessel into position for mixing while the first vessel is being discharged. The versatility built into this rugged machine provides its users with new and more efficient approaches to traditional processing techniques. High speed mechanical and hydraulic shear forces are the real key to its success. Ross Kneaders are precision built specifically for intensive

mixing and kneading the heaviest plastic masses and com-

pounds. Specially designed mixing arms revolve with very

close clearances and subject material being processed to a

tremendous compressive and shearing force. Double com-

pound precision cut gears provide uniform balanced drive on

both ends of mixing arms. Massive cast frame provides com-

#52-C 16"x40" HIGH SPEED THREE ROLL MILL. Extra heavy cast semi-steel frame gives maximum rigidity for perfect alignment of rolls. Highest quality rolls with extra hard deep chilled surface are precision ground and provided with full length internally ma-chined cooling chambers to assure constant tempera-ture and uniform dispersions. Wide face helical cut gears, extra heavy duty SKF specification type self-aligning roller bearings and heavy silent chain drive in sealed oil bath lubrication are among the superior features built into every Ross Mill. Adjustable apron angle and height for complete takeoff of material, apron balanced and with optional double pawl and ratchet adjustment, hand wheels with extra large indi-cating dials and thrust bearings for ease in setting, as well as safety trip switches are additional refinements in these latest Ross Mills. Mill can be o perated as a conventional Mill with fixed center roll and four point adjustment or can be operated with floating center roll and two point adjustment. To convert from one type operation to the other can be easily done within minutes by any operator. Various types of endplate regulators or hoppers can be provided, and can holding and tilting device, raised mounting base, and two-speed motor can be furnished if required. #52-TC 9"x24" HIGH SPEED THREE ROLL MILL with one point hydraulic roll adjustment and pressure indicating gauges. Hydraulic roll adjustment is available on all Ross Mills, and offers greater ease in properly setting rolls, while less skill and experience is required by the operator. There are no hand wheels to turn as manual moving of rolls is eliminated, and large pres-sure gauges enable roll settings to be recorded for per-fectly reproducing the same material on subsequent runs resulting in exact uniformity of product.

Special equalizers provide equal pressure at both ends of rolls at all times to assure the positive parallel-ism of roll faces necessary for uniform dispersion and minimum maintenance cost. The adjustment is direct, and there are no adjusting screws, worm wheels, or other intermediate mechanical parts subject to wear that would affect accuracy of gauges. Quick roll re-lease is incorporated for cleaning Mill, and special built-in safety overload feature is provided which is automatic and does not involve replacement of shear pins.

Mills can be set for either fixed center roll operation with two point hydraulic control .. . or readily con-verted to floating center roll operation when preferred for simplified one point hydraulic control.

#52-LC 4 1/2"x10" HIGH SPEED THREE ROLL MILL. This Mill, while of Laboratory or Pilot Scale size, is built as a replica of our larger Mills with the same extra heavy construction to give exact same results. It is built to with-stand continuous duty and in ad-dition to laboratory work is often used for small batches or limited production eight or more hours a day. Mill features rugged one-piece cast frame to eliminate de-flection of rolls, large calibrated indicating dials, helical cut gears, oversized roller bearings and all construction details of the large production Mills. Ross Heavy Duty High Speed Dispersers are widely used for fastest mixing, dissolving, emulsifying, and dispersing all types of solid-liquid or liquid-liquid material up to 60,000 centipoises. They feature a specially desi gned multiple action MILLHEAD which subjects the material to (1) tremendous direct impact as it is smashed against inner walls of Millhead, and (2) intense abrasive action as it is pumped through specially machined inner chambers of Millhead. Only after these actions take place is the dispersed material shredded by outer sawteeth which also jet it out at high speed in thin streams through the slow moving surrounding mass of material for further attrition and (3) hydraulic shear. Material is continuously recirculated through Millhead. Stainless steel Millhead and shaft are readily raised from tank by built-in hydraulic jacking unit, and Millhead is easy to dismantle or clean. Dispersers feature variable speed for operation up to 8000 FPM. Shaft and Millhead incorporate jacketed construction for heating or cooling when required. Dispersers with multiple action Millhead can be furnished in stationary tanks or as bottom entering units if preferred.

;,'--70-H SIZE 4 CRUSHER with three speed drive for greatest flexi-bility and highest production. Will pulverize material (of 1" maximum feed size) to any size between 1/4" and #100 mesh. Revolving pre-breaker roll forces material between hard 8 1/4" steel grinding plates. Indi-cating dial with handwheel lock pro-vides exact control of fineness of grind. Mill can be readily dismantled and cleaned. Also lab sizes.

=66-12" DISINTEGRATOR OR CAGE MILL for large production and very fine grinding or pulver-izing. Two sets of interlocking cages operate in opposite direction at very high speeds. Material is fed into center of cages and centrifugal action forces it against the tremendous impact of the revolving pins which quickly reduces material to a very fine particle size. Mill has no screens or grates to become clogged, and is ideal for heat sensitive materials. Cages are easy to clean. Two roll pre-breaker feed can be fur-nished for a preliminary crush and uniform feed for best results. 3/4" is maximum feed size and Mill will grind between #40-#200 mesh depending on speed of operation. Mills in 12", 18", 24" and 30" sizes.

#70 PORTABLE BREAKER OR GRANULATOR for heavy duty breaking large pieces of hard ma-terial. 4" is the maximum feed size and Breaker will reduce to anywhere between #5 and #30 mesh as de-sired. Steel agitator and upper nut give first break, and material is fur-ther reduced between the adjustable lower nut and shell. An extremely heavy duty machine, it is simple to adjust and efficient in operation.
