exhibit,DRUMset: Driving the Beat of American Music.Thisexhibitex-plorestheevolutionofthedrumsetfromitsbeginningsattheendofthe19thcenturyasagroupofsoundeffectstoitspresent-daystatusasthebackboneofcontemporarymu-sic.Alongtheway,visitorswillseetheinnovationsinpercussionthatshapedeachmusicalera,fromearlyswingandbeboptotheBritishIn-vasionandmodernindierock. LikeeveryexhibitatR!DC,visi-torswillalsohaveachancetomaketheirownmusicbyplayingoneoftheseveralinteractivecomponentslocatedinthegalleries.Rockoutononeoftheelectronicdrumsetsandplayalongwith“LowRider,”“WhentheLeveeBreaks,”or“BillieJean.”Ortrythemanystylesofbassdrumpedalstodiscoverthedifferencesinstraps,beaters,andfootboards. Three“mini-exhibits”arealsolocatedinDRUMset.ThefirstfeaturesdisplaycasescontainingdrumsandaccessoriesfromseveralfamousdrummersincludingJoeMorello,NeilPeart,andEdShaugh-nessy.Thesecondshowcasestheevolutionofsnaredrumsandbassdrumpedalsfromtheturnofthe20thcenturytothepresentday.Finally,thelastmini-exhibitgivesabriefhistoryofelectronicdrumsandpercussionthroughadisplayof

severalearlyelectronicpercussioninstrumentsandaninteractivetimeline. DRUMsetbeginswiththestoryofhowandwhythefirstdrumsetscametobe.Thedrumsetisacol-lectionofinstruments,andhowtheywerecombinedisthefirststepinthiscentury-longevolutionarypro-cess.Thedrumsetcantraceitsbeginningstopost-CivilWarAmerica.Beginninginthelate19thcentury,musicstylesdevelopedrequiringdrummerstoplaymorethanonepartatatime.Thisgavewaytothefirstdrumsets,whichconsistedofasnaredrumproppedonachairandabassdrum,usuallyleftoverfromuseinamilitarysetting.Theseearlydrumsetswereplayedbyusingbothhands,oneforeachdrum,leadingtotheterm“doubledrumming.”
DOUBLE DRUMMING DRUMSET Thisdoubledrummingsetconsistsofa1929LeedyRelianceModelbassdrumanda1909Walberg&Augesnaredrum.Althoughthisspecifickitwasnev-erplayedasadoubledrummingdrumset,itisrepre-sentativeofearlydrumsetsthatwerecobbledtogetherwithwhateverdrumsandtrapswereavailable.Noticethelargebassdrum.Thebassdrumsofearlydrumsetswerelargerthanthoseoftoday,astheywereprevi-ouslyusedasmarchingdrums.Playersusedsuitcasesandchairstopropuptheinstruments,formingthefirsttruedrumsets.

convenientpackage.Thedrumfoldsfromthecenterandcouldholdcymbals,asnaredrum,andtraps.Itisoutfittedwithanearlybassdrumpedal,knownasanoverhangpedal,whichattachestothetopofthedrumwithalongmetalrodandusesaleatherstraptoprovidetensiontothefootpedal.Theoverhangpedalrepresentsanearlyevolutionarystepfromdrummersonlyusingtheirhandstoincorporatingalllimbs.
LUDWIG & LUDWIG BASS DRUM WITH TRAPS AND INTERIOR LIGHTING Thisbassdrumdatestothe1920sandwasusedbyfamedbandleaderFletcherHenderson.Ithasapaintedfronthead,whichwasapopularartisticchoiceamongdrummersofthetime.Thisdrumalsofeaturesaninteriorlightthatchangescolorstomimicasunsetandsunrise.Thelighthelpedtoregulatethehumidityinthedrum,providingamoreconsistentsoundfromthecalfskinheads.Thedrumisoutfittedwithtraps,suchasaChinesetom-tom,cowbell,andwoodblock.
ROY KNAPP EARLY “TRAP” DRUMSET ThisdrumsetwasusedbyfamedpercussionistRoyKnapp,whowasastudiomusicianforWLS-AMinChi-
cagoduringtheearlydaysofbroadcastradio,whichincludedplayingonthefamedshowNational Barn Dance.Heemployedmanytrapsonhiskitthatal-lowedhimtocreatesoundeffectsforuseduringradiobroadcasts.Knapp’sdrumsetalsohasabellsetandlargechimes,whichfurtherincreasedhissoundop-tions.Knappwasalsoarespecteddrumteacher,andwasknownforhisRoyC.KnappSchoolofPercussion,whichhebeganin1938.SomeofhisstudentsincludedGeneKrupa,LouieBellson,DaveTough,BabyDodds,andBobbyChristian.
WFL DRUM CO. BOTTOM-TACKED TOM DRUMSET TheWFLDrumCompanyproduceddrumsfromthe1930sthroughthe1950s,duringatimeofexperi-mentationwithdrumsetdesign.Thiskitshowcasesaprogressioninthedesignofthetom-tom.Thetom-tomsonthiskithavetackedheadsonthebottomofeachdrum.Thesetackedheadsaresecuredtotheshellofthedrumbymetalrivetsthataredrivendi-rectlyintothewood.Thismeantthatthedrummer

SLINGERLAND RADIO KING DRUMSET WITH “ROLLING CONSOLE” Thismostnoticeablefeatureofthisdrumsetistheuniquerollingconsolesystemthatcontainsmountsforthetom-toms,snaredrum,cymbals,andaPlexiglasstandforholdingtraps.However,thisdrumsetisalsospecialasanexampleoftheevolutionoftom-tomde-sign. Duringthe1930s,H.H.“Bud”Slingerland,founderoftheSlingerlandDrumCo.,wasworkingcloselywithdrummerGeneKrupatodevelopanewstyleoftom-tomthatwaseasilymountedtoadrumset,whilealsoprovidingmoresoundoptions.Thisledtothecreationofthebottomlug-securedtom-tom.Drummersnowhadmultiplesoundoptionsfortom-toms,andcould

GRETSCH PROGRESSIVE JAZZ CHAMPAGNE SPARKLE DRUMSET GretschRoundBadgedrumsetswereproducedfromtheearly1930sto1970,andbecamethemostsought-aftersetupforplayingjazzandbebopduringthe1940sand1950s.TheygettheirnamefromtheshapeoftheGretschlogothatisaffixedtoeachcom-ponent. Thisdrumsetwasproducedintheearly1960s,andisoneofthefirst6-plymodels. ThisRoundBadgedrumsethastwosnaredrums,oneofwhichisaProgressivemodeljazzsnare.Itissmaller,at4x14,andhasapunchiersoundthatallowsittostandoutamongthemanysoundsofjazzandbe-bop.Thekitalsofeaturesachampagnesparklewraponitsshellsthatgivesitahiplooktogoalongwiththemusicitplayed. Thiskitrepresentsanevolutionarysteptowardsmallerdrumsizes.Keepthatinmindaswelookatthenextdrumset.

WHITE MARINE PEARL COCKTAIL KIT Asbebopandjazzbecamemorepopular,smallvenuespoppeduparoundthecountryprovidinganoutletforthesenewstylesofmusic.Sincethesesmallvenueshadtinystages,enterprisingpercus-sionistswererequiredtofindanewwaytogetthesamesoundfromsmallersetups.Cocktailkitsweretheanswer,astheypackedinthemaincomponentsofafullrangedrumsetintoacompactkit.Thisnotonlyallowedfordrummerstoplayinsmallerspaces,butalsomadetravelingwiththesekitsmucheasier.Giggingmusiciansinmajorcitieswererequiredtowalkortakepublictransit,whichisatoughtaskwhilecarryingafulldrumset.Thecocktailkitmadetheloadmuchlighter. Thedrummerusedthecocktaildrumforatom-tomsoundonthetopheadandhadabeateronthebottomheadforthebasstone.Thesnareandcym-balsroundoutthisjazzyset.
ROGERS HOLIDAY SPARKLE DRUMSET WITH “SWIV-O-MATIC” ThisRogerskitrepresentsthecombinationofhistoricsetupswithmoderndesigns.Althoughitre-semblesmostmodernfour-piecesetups,itwasthefirstdrumsettousetherevolutionary“Swiv-O-Matic”hardware,whichconsistsofballjointsthatgivelargerangesofmotiontoeachcomponent.Drummersusedthisnewinventiontocustomizetheirsetupstomatchtheirplayingstyle.
LUDWIG SUPER CLASSIC OUTFIT BLACK OYSTER PEARL DRUMSET In1964,theBeatlesmadetheirfirstappearanceonAmericantelevision,playingthreenightsonThe Ed Sullivan Show.BeatlesdrummerRingoStarrsatbehindaLudwigblackoysterpearldrumset,whichspurredcountelssdrummerstoreplicatehiskit. Thisdrumsetisarepresentationoftheblackoys-terpearlwrapthatwassofamouslyusedbyRingo.ItdoesnotmatchtheexactspecificationsofthekitRingoplayedin1964,butshowstheimportantroleheplayedinmakingLudwigandtheblackoysterpearlwrapthemostsoughtafterdrumsintheU.S.

NEIL PEART’S SLINGERLAND 10-PIECE DRUMSET ThisistheoriginaldrumsetthatNeilPeartusedwhenhewentonhisfirsttourwithRush.Itwasusedonmanysubsequenttours,andwasthedrumsetfeaturedonthealbumsFly By Night (1975), Caress of Steel (1975), 2112 (1976), andthelivealbumAll the World’s a Stage(1976),whereitwasfeaturedonthealbumcover. NDUGU CHANCLER’S YAMAHA “JACARANDA” RECORDING CUSTOM DRUMSET NduguChanclerplayedthisdrumsetonMichaelJackson’ssong“BillieJean”fromtheiconicalbumThriller (1982).Chancler,aprolificsessiondrummerandeducator,wasaskedtoplayonThriller’s onlytrackfeaturingacousticdrums.Theheadsonthisdrumarethesameheadsusedtoplay“BillieJean,”includingtheprototypeKevlarsnareheadthatisahybridversionofamarchingsnarehead. ChanclerworkedcloselywiththeYamahadesignteamtoproducethehardwareonthisdrumset.Hisguidanceledtothisdrumsethavingmuchstrongerandsturdierhardwarethanwhatwaspreviouslyused.

Hill,director)heldtheirannualRootsofRhythmTourforK–12studentsthroughoutWestandMiddleTennessee.TheensembleperformslivemusicfromBrazil,Zimbabwe,Guinea,Trinidad,Cuba,andtheUnitedStates,andshareshistoricalandgeographicalinformationaboutthesecountries,helpingstudentstobetterunderstandtheevolutionofmusicandmigrationofrhythmthroughthetransplantationofAfricanpeoplebeginningwiththeslavetrade.Theprogram(presentednumeroustimesthroughouttheyear)wasperformedformorethan4,000studentsandcommunitymembers.

Pennsylvania,diedattheageof71onApril21,2014afteralongbattlewithprostatecancer.Astalwartofthepercussionindustryforover50years,Weisswasknownasa“goto”sourceofuniquepercussionin-struments—fromtunedtaxihornstoWuhangongs—aswellasoneofthemostcompletepercussionmu-siclibrariesintheworld. BornonMarch14,1943,WeissplayedpercussioninhighschoolandwasalsoamemberofthePhiladelphiaYouthOrchestrawherehestudiedwithPASHallofFamememberandPhiladelphiaOrchestrapercussionistMickeyBookspan.“Hewasabetterteach-erthanIwasastudent,”WeisstoldDrum Business inaMay2012interview.Stevealsoconfidedthat
studyingwithBookspanwasoneofhisfavoritememories. WhileworkingfortheReadingRailroad,Weisstraveledalloverthe eastern United States, adding instrumentstohispercussioncol-lection.WeissopenedPhiladelphiaMusicRentalin1961,providingunusualpercussioninstrumentstothePhiladelphiaComposersForumandthePhiladelphiaOrchestra.Ashisrentalbusinessgrew,customerswantedtobuyinstrumentsfromhim,soheopenedSteveWeissMusicinanoldWilbergerSkiShopina“not-so-good”neighborhoodinPhiladelphia.Soonafterbuyinganotherbuildingnearby,WeissbecameanauthorizeddealerforLudwig/MusserandSlingerland/Deagan,thetwomajorpercussionmanufacturersduringthe1970s.Hewasalsooneofthefirstretail

Itishardtoseparatethemanfromthebusiness,asSteveWeissMusicwasadirectreflectionofitsflamboyantowner.Althoughhisbusinessisstate-of-the-art,withcomputerizedshippingrecordsandinventorycontrol,Weisskeptatypewriteronhisdeskandpickedupthephonetocallpeoplerather
