    Rock in its earliest stage could be described asblues with electric guitar. Rock emerged in the1950's which is a mixture of country, blues, and

    jazz and was a fundamental music genre of the50's. The major pioneers, those who made rockand roll popular were Elvis Presley, Bill Haley,Buddy Holly, and Little Richard.

    The 1980's are probably most famous for hairbands. Heavy metal bands with tight leatherpants, soaring guitar solos, and insane hair,

    such as Guns and Roses, Van Halen, AC/DC,Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Motley Crue can bestbe remembered for their power ballads andgreat guitar solos.

    The end of this era saw the rise of the BIGFOUR, which consisted of Metallica, Anthrax,Slayer and Megadeth.

    The Early 90's were the era of grunge andalternative rock. The most popular grungeband of the 90's was Nirvana. Grunge music

    originated in Seattle, Washington and can bedescribed as dirty guitar, strong guitar riffswith distortion and feedback. They had darklyrics and expressed teenage angst. Popular

    grunge and alternative bands are Pearl Jam,Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Jane's Addiction.

    Alternative rock is one of the most popular andbroadest genre of rock that exists today. Bandssuch as Linkin park, Goo Goo Dolls, Limp Bizkit,Lost Prophets are some of the bands pioneeringthe alternative rock movement.

    Heavy metal has also reached a new extreme. Sub-genres such as black metal, death metal, thrashmetal which is very loud, aggressive, and fast.

    Hardcore metal bands of today include Bullet ForMy Valentine, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Korn just toname a few.

    From Blues and Jazz to Rock to Metal. This kindof music is here to stay. New Bands are formedevery day in every part of the world.

    Even India is entering the metal scene. SomeBands which are prominent are Parikrama, PinDrop Violence, Bhayank Maut, Magdalene.
