CAR2X COMMUNICATION VIA LTE

Status quo: Car2X foreseen to run on a specific WLAN standard specified a decade ago (ITSG5, DSCR)

SML proposal: run Car2X on LTE, augmented by Mobile Edge Computing

Road authorities are reluctant to deploy WLAN access points along roads (one access point every ~400m) for CAPEX and OPEX reasons

Very slow uptake of Car2X among car manufacturers and road authorities inhibits safer driving and more intelligent traffic management

Car2X deployments start to happen, which positively impacts road safety and traffic efficiency

Use macro-cellular LTE networks, for which sites, power, data transmission etc. already exists; LTE cell sizes fit well to the critical 2km warning range

Car manufacturers refuse to add WLAN into new cars for direct cost reasons, unless forced so by regulationCostly upgrade kits for aftermarket cars
