Social Media

• “The secret of social media is that it is not about you, your product or your story. It’s about

creating value for the communities that happen to include you. If you want to make a positive

impact, forget about what you can get from social media, and start thinking about what you can

contribute. Funnily enough, the more value you create for the community, the more value they

will create for you.” -- Tim O’Reilly, O’Reilly Media

Social Media Glossary (care of Wikipedia)

• Blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

• Facebook is a free-access social networking where users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and update them with messages. The website's name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

• Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

• Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as ARPA, created in February 1958 to regain a technological lead against the USSR.

• U.S. Air Force recommends packet switching (as opposed to circuit switching) to make a network that is highly robust and survivable. After much work, what would become the ARPANET were interconnected between UCLA and SRI (later SRI International) in Menlo Park, California, on October 29, 1969. The ARPANET was one of the "eve" networks of today's Internet.

• The opening of the network to commercial interests began in 1988.• Although the basic applications and guidelines that make the Internet

possible had existed for almost two decades, the network did not gain a public face until the 1990s.

Now that you know what social media is, how do you use it?

5 Easy (and Free!) Steps:

• Monitoring your business' social media presence is incredibly important. You need to respond to people talking about your brand and understand how people view your company. However, a common concern is that it takes up too much time.

• If you set up a solid routine, monitoring your online presence doesn't have to be a hassle at all.

Page 14: Everything You Need To Know About Social Media

• 1) Check Twitter for chatter about your company (2 minutes): Use tools like TweetDeck or Twitter Search to monitor conversations about your company in real-time. To check once a day, set up an RSS feed for a specific Twitter Search to go straight to your Google Reader. Do this by clicking the little RSS icon after you complete a search. Now, ongoing search results will be sent to your reader.

• 2) Scan Google Alerts (1.5 minutes): Check your Google Alerts for your company name, products, executives or brand terms. To set this up, enter your search terms and select to receive updates as they happen or once daily. Now, when people blog about your products, an alert will be sent to your inbox. You can read the articles and respond right away!

• 3) Check Facebook stats (1 minute): Visit your Company Page's Facebook Insights. This can be found by clicking "more" under the page's main photo. Scan your fans and page views count. If you are a member of a group, check to see if any new discussions started.

• 4) Answer Industry-related LinkedIn questions (3 minutes): Search for questions on LinkedIn that you or members of your company can answer. You can set up an RSS feed for specific question categories to go to your Google Reader as well. When you find a relevant question, respond and include a link to your website.

• 5) Use Google Reader to check Flickr, Delicious, Digg and others (2.5 minutes): Also set up RSS feeds for searches on your company name and industry terms in other social media sites. Similar to monitoring LinkedIn and Twitter, your Reader will serve as a great place to centralize your other searches too!

• Do each task in the morning when you start work, and you should be good to go.
