Everything You Didn't Want to Know about
SCORM.Be very, very afraid
Shareable Content Object Reference Model Collection of standards and specifications for
web-based e-learning Defines communications between client side
content and a host system Could be anything
• Course• Chapter• Topic
Definition
1.2 2004 v4 - Sequencing
Versions
Zipped file containing everything needed for the web-based delivery of content• HTML webpages containing Javascript• imsmanifest.xml• Everything listed in the imsmanifest.xml
What is it actually?
Open a web browser Launch the module from the LMS/TMS The LMS/TMS sends back a webpage with
information• SCORM API (Name, Scores, Bookmark, etc)
When you interact with the webpage, you are using Javascript to send information to the LMS/TMS
The LMS/TMS writes the information to its database
How does it communicate?
Everything is fine until you start adding technology• Texts and graphics• Video• Audio• Animation• Simulation• Webinars• Streaming/Video-on-Demand• Virtual Environments
How does it affect the developer?
If you want to track or know the status of an object, you need to communicate with the JavaScript contained in the webpage.
Think of the webpage as a building protected by a surveillance system with a set of instructions (JavaScript).
If you put an object in the building and you don’t tell the system to add the object to the instructions, you can’t tell the LMS/TMS you want to track or know the status of the object.
Not a problem if you DON’T want to track an object.
What are you talking about?
Video Audio Animations Simulations Complex assessments Flash apps (Captivate, Articulate)
Examples of Objects
Use tools verified to work with SCORM• Modification made be necessary
Assess the object Add an acknowledgment to the SCO
Work Around
Training & Learning Architecture (TLA)• Encompasses a set of standardized Web service
specifications and Open Source Software (OSS) designed to create a rich environment for connected training and learning.
• Like SCORM, the TLA is not a system itself, but rather enables systems or applications to be built for learning.
• Experience API (xAPI)• Learning Record Store• Learning Registry• 3D Repository• RUSSEL
The future is looking bright!
The TLA components align with 4 key concepts:
Training & Learning Architecture (TLA)
Experience Tracking:• Specifications and software that can be used to
track learner data based on interactions with learning experiences.
• Learning experiences can derive from many contexts, including formal courses, simulations, informal learning with websites and videos, games, and social media interactions.
• Experience API (xAPI)• Learning Record Store
Experience Tracking
Experience API:• Store and track access to learning experiences• Enable tracking of learning experiences, including
traditional records, such as scores or completion• Stores records of learner’s actions, like reading an article
or watching a training video Learning Record Store:
• a system that stores the tracking statements communicated through the Experience API (xAPI)
• validate and store incoming statements, then retrieve the data when queried
• Learning activities using the xAPI generate statements in the form of "I did this" or "Actor verb object
Experience Tracking
Specifications and software to manage content to support just-in-time learning and enable selection of the next logical activity• Re-Usability Support System for E-Learning
(RUSSEL)• Learning Registry• 3D Repository
Content Brokering & Understanding
Re-Usability Support System for E-Learning (RUSSEL)• Open-source software project to manage and repurpose
courses, documents and multimedia assets• Includes an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) for
reuse and repurposing of SCORM-conformant content based on instructional design best practices and reusable design frameworks
Learning Registry• capturing, connecting and sharing data about learning
resources available online 3D Repository
• A repository for 3D objects
Content Brokering & Understanding
Provides access to data about learners such as learner preferences and course history
Information found in the profile can be used to tailor a learning experience to an individual by taking into account the learners specific style and experience within a subject
Profile can be developed with data from many sources, including experience tracking and learner-entered information
Learner Profile
Enables learning objectives and competency definitions to be used by content and systems to establish proper relationships
The relationships will map content/courses to objectives/competencies based on the established definitions
