With your supervision, ayoungster probably can

handle most of the layout, cutting, and assembly of thishigh-flyin' project-depending,of course, on his or her skilllevel and age.

First you make the fuselage, wing, and stabilizer

1. Rip a piece of pine to 1Yz"square. Measure 5Y4" from one endand cut the fuselage (A) to length.

2. Using the Full-Sized Patternson page 63 and the drawing belowfor reference, layout and markthe notches needed to hold theelevator (B) and the rudder (C).Do the 'same for the rabbet thatwill accept the wing. Then, usinga bandsaw or a handsaw, chisel, and mallet, cut the notches to size.

And with a bandsaw or adado blade mounted in yourradial-arm or tablesaw, cut therabbet in the underside of thefuselage.

3. Layout the location of thecockpit, again using the drawingabove as reference. Drill a 1Whole Ys" deep where the two linesintersect. Now, drill a 1" holethrough the center of the first holeand through the entire thickness ofthe fuselage, using a backer boardbelow the piece being drilled toprevent chip-out.

4. Draw diagonal lines fromcomer to comer on the front ofthe fuselage to mark the centerpoint for the prop shaft. Witli a Wbit, drill Yz" deep' into the front ofthe fuselage (A).

5. Using the pattern on page 63as a guide, mark the taper on thetail end of the fuselage. Cut thetaper to shape with a bandsaw orjigsaw. Now, round-over thesquare edges the length of thefuselage with a block plane orwood rasp.

6. Using tracing paper, transferthe shape of the rudder (B),elevator (C), and wing (D) ontoYI" stock. Remember to trace thenotches and the strut holes. Cutthe parts to shape, then cut thenotches in Band C. (We resawed1'4" pine and walnut to form the Y4"thick stock.) J.t

7. To form the strut holes, drilltwo W holes side by side. Cut therectangular holes to shape with amallet and chisel.

8. Sand all curves smooth, andsand a slight chamfer on anysharp edges. Test the fit of BandC into the notches in the fuselage.(Some filing and sanding may benecessary for a good fit.)

Now you cut the propellerparts

1. Using a circle cutter on thedrill press, cut the motor (E) andnose cone (F) to shape. Sand aslight round-over on the frontedge of both. [To sand the round-over and other round partssmooth, we mounted the parts (E,F, I) on \14" dowel stock. Then, wemounted the dowel in the chuckon our drill press, turned the drill

on at a low speed, and sanded theparts smooth.]

2. Using tracing paper, transferthe shape of the propeller (G) toW stock, and cut to shape. Drill a}-I6" hole through the center of theprop, and W holes through thecenter of the motor and nosecone.

3. Cut the prop shaft to length(1%") from Y4" dowel stock.

Here's how to guarantee asmooth landing

1. Once again using the Full-Sized Patterns, transfer the shapeof both struts (H) onto W stock.Cut the struts to shape, stick themtogether with double-faced tape, and drill a }-I6" hole through bothfor the axles. Check for a tight fitof the struts through the strutholes in the wings, and sand ifnecessary.

.2. Use a small-diameter rasp ora W dowel with sandpaperwrapped around it to form thegroove for the guns on the topend of the struts as shown in thephoto below.

3. Using a circle cutter, cut thetwo wheels en to size (1Wdiameter). Drill a W hole in thecenter of each. You can also buylW-diameter wooden toy wheels, which also have 'l4" axle holes.

4. Cut the wheel axle to length(4W) from W dowel stock. Usingthe same size dowel stock, cut thetwo guns to length. Drill a lis" hole

You're almost ready for takeoff1_ Sand all the parts smooth,

sand all sharp edges. (Whilemost projects are sanded aftercompletion, it is much easier tosand this one before gluing. Ittakes more time to try to sandaround all the parts, especially themoving ones, later.)

2. Glue the rudder, then theelevator in the tail end of thefuselage. Glue and clamp the wingto the underside of the fuselage.

3. Attach the motor (E),propeller (G), and then the nosecone (F) to the fuselage (A) withthe W walnut dowel. Glue themotor to the body, and glue the

nose cone to the dowel. (Be'careful not to get any glue onthe prop so that it can spin freelyon the Yt" dowel.)

4. Glue the wheels (I) in placeon the axle. After the glue dries, fit, but don't glue, the struts (H)onto the axle. Position and gluethe struts in place through thewings. Finally, glue the guns intothe coves on top of the struts.

5. If you want your airplane tolook exactly like ours, attachcolored tape and decals. (Wefound the colored tape at a localhardware store and decals at aHobby shop.)

6. Finish the entire airplane (we-t.; used several coats of tung oil),

------......:.--------~ and you're ready to fly.
