    KOOVATHUR EVALUATION VISIT REPORT

    4TH FEB 2012

We a group of eight volunteers of NSS left to the village called Koovathur near Kalpakkam for

evaluating the government school students studying in class 3, 4 and 5. As it was a half working day, we

planned to meet the children at school. First we met the President of the village, seeking permission to

perform our activity in his village. He gave us a warm welcome without any hesitation and also

requested the Head master of the elementary school to allow us to meet the children of their school.

Then we met the school Head master and explained our purpose of visit to him. As it was a

survey quite against their staffs and institution, he asked whether we had the consent from their higher

official AEO. We were not prepared for that and so we said that we would meet them at their home. We

were there in the school by 10.30am and they were working till 12.30pm.So we had to stay in the school

till they disperse. So the head master suggested us to meet the class 5 students. So we spent the next

    two hours with them.

The class that was going on was Dictionary time. We took up the class and gave the students

with few words to find their meaning and almost everyone was able to find and read it. Later, we gave

few Maths problems including multiplication and division, and to our surprise many were able to solve

those without any mistake. We asked them to read the Tamil sentences in which except one or two,

everybody were able to make it out. Then we left for the village called ____________ for rest of our

    evaluation.

We divided ourselves into 3 groups and covered the village. We first found only few 6th

    standard

students, who were able to do only either of the activity, that is, either with Tamil or Maths or not both.

Only 7th standard students were able to do these exercises. Later on, we found many 3 to 5 class

students, who were also in the same condition. We were really surprised when we saw that a 5th class

girl was not able to read those simple sentences. One more notable issue was, students who were able

to do subtraction without borrow were not able to do subtraction with borrow, many such cases were

    there.

Parents, whom we met, agreed that they are not aware of what their children is doing at school,

their academic performance, their activities etc. So we showed them that their son/daughter was not

able to such simple sentences and calculate a simple math and also insisted that it was not the childs

fault and they are not to be blamed. We have asked them to meet the staffs and ask about their childs

progress. One more pathetic situation was, parents themselves were not interested in their childs

academics, that is, they are not willing to send them to school. This attitude of parents is still prevailing.

Finally we met the president and gave the acknowledgement and asked him to forward it to the

    head master.
