Vera Lynn’s iconic cliffs at Dover are a must see, if for no other reason

than it may help you understand the English. Here like nowhere else in

the “sceptred isle” that is Great Britain, the notion of it being an island

nation becomes clear.

With the White Cliffs in your rear view mirror head onwards to Cornwall,

the reason for our recent trip. Southern England has much to offer but

in the spirit of “being very English” we picked out two special stops on

the way.

For us the gateway to Cornwall and wherewe felt our holiday started was Truro.Here at last we found an English townwe both could envisage actually living in.

Ok so you must think about the driving element and have a nominated driver but if you’re interested in gin, then

the Bombay Sapphire visitor experience is one for your itinerary. Gin has been a quintessential English drink since the 1600’s its popularity heighted in the British

tropical colonies where it was drunk to disguise the taste of quinine, the anti-malarial compound. Gin and tonic was born and included some quinine, fast becoming a cocktail

favourite. The gin revival today has been driven by

brands like Bombay Sapphire, with a new emphasis on botanicals and infusions beyond just juniper, its mainstay

flavouring ingredient. At Laverstoke Mill, you can take a guided tour of the working still, experiment with

botanicals in the ‘visitor laboratory’ and enjoy a sample in the Mill Bar or even take cocktail mixing lessons.

Arguably after fish and chips, the Cream Tea is the most quintessentially English dining experience.

Drinking tea with baked scones, jam and cream can be dated back to the 11th century but it became popularised in the 1930’s and remains so today. The Cornish method means you apply the jam

before the cream, and is often the traditionalist’s preference but the ‘jam or clotted cream first’

argument rages on in tea rooms across the country. You’ll find cream teas served throughout Cornwall.

En-route to Cornwall, why not stop at Highclere Castle, the quintessential privately

owned stately home and setting for the TV series, Downton Abbey. The set of

all 6 seasons of the Golden Globe winning TV series, as the home of the fictional Crawley,

family tracing the years 1912 to 1926. The present castle was mainly developed

during the 1800’s by the Earl of Carnavon, whose current descendants still live here.

The house and gardens are open to the public from July to September, with pre-booking

essential. Or try one of their bookable special events throughout the year.

Visit Highclere Castle,the real ‘Downton Abbey’

Mevagissey. Cornwall is full of quaint little harbour villages, untouched by time. Our favourite was Mevagissey and dinner at the excellent Fountain Inn, a proper little pub, with great seafood (arrive early!). The English love a good garden. So take two days and visit the extraordinary Lost Gardens of Heligan, perfect for a stroll in the extensive woodlands and exotic gardens. Nearby, the Eden Project is a different experience, with its giant biospheres, taking you from the Tropics to the

Mediterranean. Next drive to The Lizard peninsular for stunning bays and scenery and then to Marazion and St Michael’s Mount. One of Cornwall’s most iconic sights is the Abbey on this tidal island. Catch a small ferry or better still, walk the cobbled path across the bay.

Perfect beachside town with an extensive harbour

and five beaches and so picturesque. Wander the

cobbled lanes, browse in the artsy shops and grab

some fish and chips.

Minack The real theatre of dreams

Just three miles from Land’s End this gem of a place with such a curiously,

eccentric history. Carved into the crags overlooking Porthcurno Bay

and azure blue Atlantic, this amazing clifftop amphitheatre was the life’s

work of local Rowena Cade. Her dream in the 1930’s to build a natural

al-fresco theatre which she oversaw until her death in 1983.

You can still enjoy live theatre here too!

LAND’S END Stop for the fridge magnet if you must, but spend your

time elsewhere. Nearby Whitesand Bay is a great walk

and rewards your arrival at ‘the end of the world’.

Our Cornish adventure took us three weeks, we had two days of rain and many long days of blue skies and good temperatures for this kind of meandering holiday. We found some great campsites, mysteriously busy but never full. Of all the holidays we’ve had, this is the one we cherish the most.

"If there is a food heaven in England, it could well be

Padstow”. A cosmopolitan village in a perfect harbour

setting, where the main attraction is food. Most head

for celebrity chef Rick Stein’s places, but we found Prawn

on the Lawn. A micro kitchen and fish shop, where

the meal surpassed all others on this adventure.

Perfect food, how quintessentially un-English.

There’s plenty of good pubs too!

New for season 2019 are new models with layout prefix D. The D stands for “double” as in “double sofa” or as Adria name them ‘Open Salon’ layouts. You’ll find them in the Sonic, Matrix and Coral ranges. The new “face to face” layout provides for two sofa groups facing each other across the flexible dinette table and an open plan way of living.

In a typical ‘Open Salon’ layout, the seating configuration gives a flexible set up, one for driving with up-to 4 homologated seats (each with three point seat belts) and one set up for camping, showing the face to face seating

arrangement and the added flexibility of the adjustable table. The effect is more space, easier passage between the driver cabin and lounge and more comfort, especially at meal times. The dinette table is 20% larger (length 750mm x width 840mm) and flips in half for even more flexibility (folded dimensions: length 750mm x width 420mm). In the Sonic and Matrix, there’s a new side window making the lounge very light, with a more spacious feeling. In the Coral the new layout adds an additional bed, making it suitable to sleep three people comfortably.

Stane, with over 36 years of experience at Adria, knows his stuff. In recent years he has overseen the development of the motorhome range and when it comes to the detail, he’s the “go to person” with a commanding grip on space, design and functionality. Nothing gets past his exacting eye. “Trends come and go and this is often reflected in how

layouts are developed and what we at Adria offer” he explains.Many trends originate in how we live at home and the trend to a more open plan kitchen and family room is a strong one across most of Europe. This is hard to replicate within any motorhome but Adria’s solution is an interesting one.

The Supreme models have a classy and

modern look, with Onyx interior. It’s an

attractive, quite monochromatic and

automotive styling familiar to many

upscale car brands but with glossy

white cabinetry. You can personalise

with a choice of textiles and new soft

furnishings. In the Plus models, a little

more traditional style with the Sandy

White or Sandy Brown interior, again

with the personal furnishing choices.

NEW INTERIOR DESIGN

NEW SOLUTIONS

The new kitchen has clean unfussy lines, ample worktop space (with flip-up extension), a sink

and two burner stove, and three deep soft close drawers beneath which proved a dream to

use. Complemented by the essential 90l compressor fridge (152l in SPB and SLB models).

The dinette, proved spacious and with the swivel cabin chairs, adjustable table and utility tray

(we used it for everything from mugs to tablet!) it’s just a great space to be in, especially under

the large sky-roof, which is screened and ventilated for day and summer time use, of course.

The new duplex bathroom was also intriguing and a joy to use. Move the swivelling wall and you

have two bathrooms in one space (one with a sink and toilet and one with a big shower cubicle).

Other models offer an en-suite format (with a separate toilet and shower cubicle) and some offer

the more regular ergo bathroom formats.


You simply can’t beat the feeling of space and

light from the new Sky-roof, day or night.

Nothing beats just taking off and camping out under the stars

scenery all around”.

Daily life can get the better of us all and you rarely remember the days you spent at home. With a campervan you can just get up and go. Roam far and free or sample the beauty on your doorstep, like we did, visiting stunning Jezersko, less than an hour from our home in Ljubljana. Great for trekking and biking, with the stunning crystalline Lake Plansar and views to die for. We ‘escaped the ordinary’ in the new Twin Supreme and weren’t disappointed. We got to experience the big sky and the wild beauty of Lake Bohinj, the pearl of all Slovenia’s lakes, more serene than its more famous neighbour, Lake Bled. The Twin Supreme’s stand-out feature is the new Sky-roof, where the double panoramic roof window brings in light and a new feeling of space and of being in nature. When you live with this new van, you appreciate how the clever Adria engineers have integrated the living space and the cabin, into one space, in the new Supreme (and in the new Plus models). No bulky dividers, instead a new ‘cabin loft’ space which improves headroom. It’s almost a crossover, van from the outside but a more motorhome feeling inside. Both models sit on the Fiat Ducato chassis, with engine and useful driver aids and there’s five exterior colours, with pre-installation for rear-view camera and some useful options like the integrated mosquito net and electrical power sliding door. Inside, there’s new layouts, all-new interior designs and new features, including smartly designed kitchen and bathrooms.

Bedrooms are located at the rear of course, all with comfortable

matrasses and all are generously proportioned, in long or fixed

bed formats, all with new storage solutions and extra privacy.

We had plenty of space for our bikes, and gear and managed

two great night’s sleep. In the new SGX model, for those with

more hard-core gear than us, there's an electrical pull-down

bed allows sleeping at different heights and positions and really

maximises storage, even for a motorcycle.

Winter use – its’ part of the package that Adria,

frankly, just does things well and differently.

The new range has Adria ‘Thermo-build’ standards

of insulation, ventilation and air circulation and offers

Truma heating (and Webasto on the SGX model).

Our test van came with factory-fitted optional accessories

including awning, solar power and roof-mounted air

conditioning. The neat roof rails also can be fitted with

after-market rails to put your adventure kit up top.

So, the new generation brings some breakthrough innovations

to the campervan fraternity and will likely make the decision

for some, between a campervan and a motorhome, more

difficult. Finally, it is indeed time to escape the ordinary.

New for season 2019 on Adria motorhomes, vans and caravans, you can now choose from a brilliant repertoire of soft furnishings to add a bit more personality. There’s up-to six colourways available for motorhomes and vans, and four for caravans. We asked Adria’s in-house designer, and part of the project team, Katja Jenič to explain the inspiration behind the new program.“We are really proud of our 2019 interiors but there’s always roomfor more personalisation, and for some added colour accents. So we developed a new range of soft furnishings, with scatter cushions, which can really make the difference, in fact the possibilities have really multiplied to up to 36 per range!”

Start with your choice of layout of course, as you know best what you need and don’t need in terms of space and accommodation. Then the basic textile which should be functional of course but also start to make your caravan or motorhome, feel, well, like home. Then it getsinteresting. “Adora plays a key part in the Adria line up” she says, “it accounts for a very significant share of our caravan sales and it has a great reputation for quality, for comfort and features. The current Adora, which we released in 2015 when we redesigned the exterior and interior and added a very important feature – the large panoramic window. ONE FOR THE TEENAGERS!

Adria hasn't changed the winning Adora formula for season 2019, why would you? Yes there are some small detailed improvements like the new LED rear lights and improved tyres, but the main changes are to the choices of interior textile and new soft furnishings. Erna: “We talked to many customers and found a significant niche for Adora, for caravanners holidaying with older children. Some competitors of course offer so called ‘family models’ but these just have some extra bunk beds, we wanted to go further. From these discussions we developed the so called “teenager layout” – the principle being this caravan has two entrance doors and several discrete living spaces, which is very helpful for many families”.

We closed the interview with Erna, asking for her favourite caravan. “I particularly love the Adora and the Alpina but with three teenagers of my own, I’d now go for Adora 673 PK, it delivers real family time and I can also get time with my husband, beneath the stars!”

The rear space, or “teenager lounge” is cool. It’s perfect for hanging out, for gaming, even for impromptu sleepovers as there’s a simple hammock bed on the wall. As if to feed the Aurora dream, the display is never guaranteed. The Lights will only come out to play on their own terms. You can improve your chances of capturing The Aurora by selecting a remote location in the Arctic Circle that offers dark skies, far away from the light pollution of towns and cities. Choose a night when clear skies are forecast, and check that the moon will not be too large or bright. Apukka Resort in Finland opened its doors for the first time in December 2017, offering guests a variety of unique Aurora-centric experiences. One such experience for one or two people is a peaceful night alone in the wilderness enveloped in the warmth and luxury of a very special ‘Aurora Wagon’. What is an Aurora Wagon? It is based on the wonderfully cute Adria Action. Action’s unmissable shape and gorgeous curves make it a modern style classic. Funky design, luxury specification, solid quality, superb insulation, and, of course, that fabulously huge roof window, all combine to make this caravan the perfect choice for the Apukka Resort. Converting the Action into an Aurora Wagon involved wrapping the

caravan in Apukka-themed branding, then replacing the wheels with skis. Basically, an Aurora Wagon is an Adria Action on skis. Me, I have always been a huge fan of the Action. I love good design, but only when it is matched with useable practicality. Ten years ago I spent the entire summer touring in a 361LH, and now we see this classic reimagined. It was in Düsseldorf that I first met the Action 391PD, and it was Love at First Sight. ‘Love the New Original’ invited the publicity. Love it I did. So imagine my delight when I was offered the opportunity to chase my dreams, visit the Apukka Resort in Finland, and spend a night in an Aurora Wagon based on the Action 391PD. After a warm welcome at the intimate resort, the friendly and enthusiastic Mikko coupled up my Aurora Wagon to his snowmobile and we headed off into the forest wilderness. Soon I was alone in the Aurora Wagon enjoying the hot berry juice and snacks left by Apukka. In order to keep things simple, cooking is not permitted in the Aurora Wagon and the water tanks(other than the toilet flush tank) are not filled. Flasks of boiling

A DREAM COME TRUE? IT HAS BEEN MY OWN LIFELONG DREAM TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, OR AURORA BOREALIS TO GIVE THIS PHENOMENON ITS CORRECT NAME.

At midnight I retreated to the warmth and luxuryof the Aurora Wagon where I slept soundly under the blanket of stars twinkling down through the roof light. As I now reflect on the experience, my eyes fill with tears once again. Not only had I realised my lifelong dream of seeing the Northern Lights, but I had done so in the best way possible, in my dream caravan from the Adria range. Allow yourself to dream, and do whatever you can to make it happen. As I discovered for myself, dreams really can come true.

water and bottles of drinking water are instead provided, as are an emergency mobile phone, emergency sleeping bags, and of

course a fully-charged battery and a full cylinder of LPG for the heating. Outside, the temperature dropped to 20 degrees below zero, yet the Action remained warm and toasty thanks to the efficient Truma heating. I lie quietly on the bed in total darkness, staring intently out of the huge roof window. To be lying in complete silence, in splendid isolation, alone with my thoughts, admiring the starry sky, and being in complete connection with nature while remaining in a warm and comfortable space, was a truly magical experience. Occasionally I would see a dim green glow on the horizon. The glow would increase in intensity… and then fade. Later it would reappear, and fade again. For two silent hours the Aurora teased and played with me. Finally, at about 10.30pm, the glow continued to brighten and I noticed through

the roof window a faint green streak right across the sky. This was it! Hastily I put on some warm clothes, grabbed my camera and tripod, and went outside. For the next 90 minutes the Aurora Borealis treated me to the Greatest Natural Show on Earth. At one point, the lights literally danced. Tears filled my eyes as pure joy filled my heart, so deeply moved I was by the overwhelming experience.

The night passed so quickly, after the light show I had a great night’s sleep in the adorable Action, such a comfy bed too. I woke to the most amazing sunrise, opening the door to a remarkable vista and I had to pinch myself that I was really here. Time for a quick cup of tea before the Apukka

people came to “rescue me”, not that that’s the right term, as this was really glamping luxury and this caravan was the perfect host.

So many beaches!

Research confirms that the beach is the key factor in 60% of all holiday choices. However, beaches come in many shapes and sizes and if you’re travelling in a leisure vehicle, your needs may differ from other people’s wishes. What’s the access road like? Can we park? Where is the nearest campsite? Can we camp at the beach? All reasonable questions but very hard to answer before you leave home. Gregor Balazic has always loved the beach and with his family, supported by Adria, he is on a mission to make beach life easier. As Gregor explains: “I love beaches but it’s a frustrating process to find the perfect beach. So I set about solving the problem. Four years ago I quit my job, bought a campervan and travelled over 30,000kms visiting and recording beaches in Croatia, Spain, France and Italy.

From this adventure, my team created Beachrex (“Beach King”) and our initial website is now providing up to 200 data points plus good photographs, 360 views, videos and all kind of local attraction information on the beaches I visited”. With special filter system, you can find your perfect beach in a matter of seconds, and there is of course also the “RV accessible” tick box for easier navigation. Gregor and the Beachrex team have now set their sights on visiting 1000 beaches across Europe in the next few years, in a variety of Adria motorhomes, campervans and caravans to complete the next stage of the project. The first destination, to Sardinia in an Adria Coral XL, perfect for such a big adventure with so much space, comfort and accommodation.

On an extremely cold Monday morning in late February, Jakov Fak, just back from Pyongyang, was holding a reception with his partners,

including Adria Mobil, and reflecting on his success at the winter games.

Jakov Fak, (born in 1987) is a world-class athlete in biathlon, a popular winter sport, particularly in the Nordic countries, combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Born in Croatia, but representing Slovenia since 2010, Fak had previously won bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships and also at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, with this year’s Olympic Silver Medal achievement topping that.

Jakov Fak, received warm congratulations from Sonja Gole (General Manager of Adria Mobil) and Matjaž Grm (Executive Director of Adria Mobil for Sales and Marketing) for his outstanding Olympic achievement. They also presented him with a symbolic gift – a family vacation in the Adria Village resort in Croatia - so at least the thought of a hot summer warmed up the icy cold but emotional celebration in Gorenjska.

Biathlon is an extremely tough sport to master, requiring huge resource of stamina and strength, outstanding technique in cross-country skiing and precision in rifle shooting, in extreme conditions. It’s fascinating to watch, gaining many new audiences at this year’s Olympics.

Jakov spends many weeks preparing himself for regular competition and of course for the Olympics. We show here some photographs of his spring training, with the Sonic Supreme, which acted at times as his home, training center and basecamp.

One curious routine, involving kitchen preparation with a blindfold helps Jakov visualize his rifle shooting technique without looking (but don’t try this in your motorhome!).

Jakov is as cool as a cucumber and a supremely focused individual as you might expect but is also very engaging. His enthusiasm and passion, even for his motorhome is never far from the surface. He visited the Adria factory in May 2018 to officially open the new Climate Chamber, recently added to the Novo mesto facilities to enable extreme climate testing of vehicles on the Adria site.

In late 2017 a state of the art climate chamber facility was installed within the Adria facilities and is now a key part of the development and testing of Adria vehicles and components. Few competitors have their own chambers which gives Adria an advantage and helps support the reputation of producing very robust and usable all year round vehicles, even in harsh conditions.

It's a part of Adria's 'Thermo-build' standards approach and how temperature, air-flow, heating, insulation and cooling are properly designed and managed, so that all vehicles are usable all year round. This results in for example Grade 3 EN1646 heating standards being attained.

It also means key components can be tested to extremes, such as the large panoramic windows which are tested to chassis torque forces at extreme temperatures. The chamber can test whole vehicles with extreme temperature tests from -40 to +60 degrees in short and long cycle tests. It can also subject vehicles to extremes in humidity from 45% to 80% between +30 and +60 degrees. That's more extreme than any user could achieve on their adventures and is comforting to know!

PROFILE OF A CHAMPION

ANTONIO "TONY" CAIROLI (born 23 September 1985)

is an Italian nine-time Grand Prix motocross world champion, widely regarded as one of the

greatest motocross riders of all time. He is so successful, he celebrated his 50th GP

win in a world championship back in 2012.

Cairoli was born in Patti, Sicily. He began his motocross Grand Prix career in 2002 riding a

Yamaha. He was the 2005 FIM world champion in the MX2-GP class. In 2007 he again won the MX2-GP world championship as well as the

English Supercross championship. Cairoli claimed the 2009

MX1-GP FIM Motocross World Championship, and after moving to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing,

successfully defended his title in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and MXGP 2014 .

Cairoli has won several races at the Motocross des Nations, particularly in 2012 and 2013 when he managed to win every single race he entered.

Adria has created a special series of custom built Twin camper vans specifically for the needs of the KTM Motocross team in the FIM World Championship. Motocross is a form of extreme off-road racing held in enclosed circuits in front of a large fan base and this year’s championship runs through 14 race events across Europe and 1 in the USA, culminating in the final race in the UK on October 1st. It dates back to the early 1990’s “trials” and was the first racing trophy to be won by the KTM brand back in 1974. The Adria Twins used by KTM are highly customised versions of the popular camper van. Branded in the motorcycle company’s dramatic orange livery, these special Twins are “ready for everything”. Adria custom KTM Twins in action. Special custom features include KTM interior styling, with special leather trim and cabinetry. Underneath the core of the campervans are the standard models, where features such as the kitchen, bathroom and large rear bedroom (which converts to extra storage) all come in handy during a race weekend.

“We are travelling a lot with the kids, yet we had no idea how this adventure would turn out”, says Lilo Krebernik, the father of the so called Snowboarding family. “But then again, all the inspiring travel blogs and Instagram accounts tell you to get out of your comfort zone.” Still, they carefully thought about their needs and selected a perfect vehicle to make everyone feel good for whole trip: Sun Living A70DK. Perfect for big families with bunk beds in the back, 7 sleeping spaces, a big, useful 142 L fridge, enormous garage box and of course the hide-away bathroom solution that turns the walking area into an alley and almost doubles the kitchen size.

The family had a rough plan to drive from Austria over Switzerland to France to go surfing, and possibly even down to Portugal. But they also needed some snowboarding somewhere in the Alps. Oh, did we mention that all members share a big passion for boardsports (hence the name) and outdoor activities? You can imagine now that they had to pack a lot of things: “To our big surprise we managed to fit a lot of stuff into the motorhome’s garage: 2 surfboard, 4 skateboards, all the bags we’d need to work from the road (computers, cameras, etc.), clothing for rainy days, extra boots and a lot of organic food that we bought at home - just in case. And all our

regular clothes found space in the overhead storage of the car. Each kid had an own bin for their clothes, as did we, and there were some for toys and books. And we found a perfect place for our dog too!” Yes, they even took their lovely Nikoleta with them, because why not. And off they went. There’s not enough space in this article to cover the whole trip, but they’ve posted it on the Sun Living website – it’s an enjoyable read, so we suggest to check it out.

NEW SUN LIVING NEEDED A TEST IN THE REAL ENVIRONMENT, SO WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE PERFECT TO GIVE IT TO A 5-MEMBER-PLUS-ONE-MORE-ON-THE-WAY-FAMILY AND SEND THEM ON THEIR WAY.

WELL, IT HELPED US A LOT THAT THEY'VE ALREADY DECIDED TO SIMPLY PACK AND GO ON THE ROAD FOR A MONTH AND SEE HOW FAR WEST THEY COULD REACH AND HOW MUCH THEY COULD EXPLORE. AND THEY EXPERIENCED A LOT! FROM SUN TO SNOW, FROM HEAT TO SEARING WINDS, FROM HACKING THE MOTORHOME TO TIGHTENING THE PERSONAL BONDS. SO, IT WAS A PROPER TEST. A BIG TEST. BIG FAMILY TEST.AND HOW DID SUN LIVING DO?

The Krebernik family started snowboarding as a family in the mid 80ies, something that wasn‘t really common back then. And they are still riding together as a family, with three generations being united by one activity! Many parents support their children these days when it comes to snowboarding and more and more activities are available for kids. That’s something that should be more visible to a wider audience, and they try to serve as a role model.

However, Sun Living proved to be so spacious that they didn’t have to focus just on the functionality of the available space but also on adapting it to make it personal and turning it into a home. They procured some non-expensive accessories, made some really clever hacks and found some creative DIY solutions and – voila – Sun Living “Pimp our ride” edition was born. It should come as no surprise that the whole family enjoyed the trip. “When we picked up the car, the kids immediately felt at home. They brought some of their toys and books and turned it into theirs”. The Sun Living behaved perfectly, they ticked all the checkpoints from their list (yes, also snowboarding!) and returned enlightened: “The whole roadtrip made us realize how less it takes to be happy, and the kids showed us that it doesn’t take a lot to get used to van life!”, says Lilo and finishes with: ”Being back was nice, but also sad in a way. We

would have spent a lot more time on the road if possible. But then again, this definitely won’t be our last adventure, once the baby is here we’ll probably figure out where to go next.” And Sun Living will be happy to join!
