About PocketPOS

PixelPoint PocketPOS enables users to run PixelPoint POS on handheld devices and tablets. Thedevice being used must support MS Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) and have aresolution of no more than 400x800 pixels. This document outlines the requirements for usingPocketPOS and the PixelPoint POS limitations that result from the use of smaller screens.PocketPOS should only be used for making sales, and not for performing advanced POSfunctions.

A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Terminal Services and RDP technology is required inorder to set up PocketPOS. Depending on the hardware, data traffic, and budget, there areseveral configurations that can be used to deploy PocketPOS. Refer to the Certified Device Liston the PAR Partner Center for a complete list of handheld devices certified by PixelPoint forPocketPOS use.

PocketPOS Licensing

One free PocketPOS handheld license comes with each full PixelPoint seat license. A handhelddevice is a device with a screen resolution of at most 400x800 pixels. Devices with largerscreens will require full station licenses in order to run PixelPoint software.

To use PocketPOS, ask your Channel Manager to have the PocketPOS Client and PocketPOSSite modules activated for your license. In order to use the full station license along with itsfree PocketPOS license at the same time, also ask your Channel Manager to have theConcurrent PocketPOS module activated for your license.

To summarize, the following three modules are required to run PocketPOS:

Network Setup

Handheld devices typically use RemoteDesktop to access dedicated systems which connect tothe POS Server. Depending on the number of users that will be connecting from their handhelddevices, a server edition of Microsoft Windows with Microsoft Terminal Server service(Microsoft Terminal Services) may be required.

Important: The following instructions call for the installation of PixelPoint POS.Only run the installation one time on each system. Do not run the station install frommore than one user account. Encryption keys are created during the initial PixelPointstation install that are valid for all PixelPoint sessions running on that PC, regardlessof from which user account PixelPoint is launched from. Running a second stationinstall will result in an "Object already exists" error.

Single Handheld SetupThe Microsoft Windows OS family (excluding server versions) allow one Remote Desktop (RDP)session at a time. If only one handheld device is being used:

1. Set up a system on your network with access to the POS Server.2. Run the PixelPoint POS station install on this system.3. Set up a new Windows user account for the handheld device to log into.4. Log into the new account and create a shortcut to the directory on the POS Server: "\

\POSServer\PixelPOS\PixelPoint.exe #", where "#" is the station number for thehandheld unit.

5. Place a copy of this shortcut in the Windows start up folder so the PixelPoint POSautomatically loads when the handheld user logs in.

Multiple Handheld SetupIf more than one handheld device is going to be used at the same time, a Microsoft WindowsServer OS with the appropriate CALS (Terminal Services Connection License) will be requiredto act as a bridge between the POS Server and the handheld devices.

To connect multiple handhelds to the POS Server via a bridge:

1. Set up a networked system with access to the POS Serverrunning an Microsoft Windows Server OS.

2. Run the PixelPoint POS station install on this system from theAdministrator account.

3. Create a user account for each handheld device.4. Log into each new account and create a Desktop shortcut to:

"\\POSServer\PixelPOS\PixelPoint.exe #". Replace "#" with thehandheld unit's station number. Then place a copy of thisshortcut in the Windows Startup folder so that PixelPoint POSautomatically loads when the handheld user logs in.

5. Test that all configuration is correct by logging into the POSServer from a handheld device.

Important: Make sure to secure the wireless network before using PocketPOS.Refer to PCI guidelines for specific steps you can take.

Wireless Print Setup

PocketPOS devices are capable of printing to standard POS printers. If all the devices are closeto a LAN-based POS printer, consider using that printer as the primary one where all receiptswill print from.

If PocketPOS devices are more spread out, you may wish to configure several printers tohandle print jobs for devices dedicated to each area. For example, PocketPOS devices used fororders in a dining room could print to the POS station by the bar, while devices used for ordersplaced outdoors could print to the POS station by the kitchen which is more convenientlylocated for patio orders than the one handling dining room orders.

If receipts are printed frequently, or connecting a printer to a POS station is not practical, awireless "belt" printer can be used. Belt printers are small, portable printers carried on aserver's belt. They operate over the same wireless network as the handheld units.

PocketPOS Tweaks

Floor Plans and Language FilesThe PAR Partner Center contains a number of small handheld floor plan files and language filetailored specifically for PocketPOS devices. Look for "HH.flr" and "NewLanguageHH.txt".

The "HH.flr" floor plan contains 25 customizable tables that can be edited. If you change oradd a new floor plan, you must copy that new floor plan to the "\PixelPOS" folder on both thePOS Server and the system that the handheld device has an RDP connection to. The languagefile shortens labels on many POS buttons to make them fit on smaller handheld screens.

Create as many copies of "NewLanguageHH.txt" as there are handheld devices. Replace the"HH" in the file name with the handheld device's station number.

Font SizeThe recommended font size for handheld devices with resolutions as small as 240x320 is 7 pt.Use a sans-serif font like Tahoma for better readability. When using a larger resolution such as400x800, a 10 pt font size would also likely work.

Fonts are configurable from the Fonts tab in BackOffice Stations Setup (below):

Policy ChangesToolbar images can be disabled in PixelPoint POS to save screen space. This can be done byenabling the NoGraphics policy on PocketPOS stations in BackOffice Policy Setup. Refer to theother PocketPOS-related policies for more customizable options.
