“I know the Russians will be there, the Cubans will be there, but I’m really not worried about anybody, no one specific guy,” the 20-year-old welterweight says. “I’m just gonna go do my own thing. And if I gotta get a little rough in there, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

Andrade is the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world. At 152 pounds following his gold-medal win at the World Championships last November, the Providence, R.I., native displayed the skills that make him one of the USA’s best hopes for Olympic gold.

A southpaw boxer-puncher whose style is rooted in defense and dual-fisted assaults, he has had first-hand experience with international competition. In the finals of the 2007 PanAm Games in Rio de Janeiro,

Brazil, Demetrius lost a controversial decision to Brazilian favorite Pedro Lima.

“Everybody knows I got robbed,” Demetrius says. “When you go to other countries and you’re fighting a person from that country and he’s the only one they’ve got left, they’re gonna give it to him regardless. But that fight already happened. There’s nothing I can do about it. It let me know that whenever I’m in that situation, I just need to let it all go. Let my hands go, because that’s the only way I can score.”

Despite that disappointment, Demetrius doesn’t see anything standing in his way in Beijing. “I see myself on that stand, getting that gold medal,” Andrade says. “As long as I keep getting stronger and build up my wind more, everything should be good.”

Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade knows all too well that nothing is guaranteed in amateur boxing. But that hasn’t reduced his confidence going into the 2008 Olympic Games. To let Demetrius

tell it, there’s no way he’s leaving Beijing, China, without a gold medal.

“It gets a little hard sometimes, you know. I question myself, like, ‘Why do I take classes during training?’” Diaz says. “But then I realize that boxing is not everything. I’m at the peak of what I do, but boxing can end tomorrow. With school, nobody can take that away from me.”

“We’ve always worked boxing around his school; never the other way around,” says trainer/manager Willie Savannah, who’s been running the Savannah Boxing Club in Houston for almost 30 years. “What sets Juan apart from most fighters – and it’s the same thing with the Klitschko brothers – is education. He goes into the ring understanding that he’s gonna get a college degree and be a lawyer whether he wins the fight or not. Having something to fall back on gives him a sense of relaxation. He doesn’t go in there thinking, ‘If I lose I’m going to have to sleep in the street.’”

That said, the ferocity and dedication with which Diaz attacks his training makes it tough to believe that Juan sees boxing as his second-most important responsibility. Universally considered to be one of the hardest-working and best-conditioned athletes in the sport, Diaz has come a long way from the 110-pound eight-year-old who first walked into Savannah’s gym years ago. Today, Savannah and Juan’s strength and conditioning coach, Brian Caldwell, have helped turn their fighter into one of the sport’s elite athletes.

“By the time Juan was 15 he was getting up at 5 o’clock every morning, working out and then going to school, and coming back to the gym when he was out of school,” Savannah says. “One day I asked him, ‘How many kids in the world do you think are doing what you’re doing?

You’ve gotta do something that they don’t do if you want to be the best in the world.’”

The aggressive, volume-punching style that “Baby Bull” has developed depends totally on superior physical conditioning. The most unique aspect of his training is that he doesn’t run. Instead, Diaz swims and uses the Stairmaster to ease pressure on his joints while strengthening his legs.

“I know I don’t have that natural ability, that one-punch knockout power, so I make up for it by training as hard as I do,” Diaz says. “It helps me a lot in the later rounds of a fight. A lot of guys can’t stand the pressure that I apply on them. Being in shape helps me win a lot of fights.”

TRAIN LIKE A CHAMPION: a week in the gym with juan diaz

Swimming – Juan swims every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He starts at 7 a.m. with weightlifting and then works an hour and a half on the rotating Stairmaster machine. Then he swims a mile and a half in the pool, which takes about 35–45 minutes. “It’s something like climbing a mountain,” Diaz says. Caldwell, who trains about a dozen other professional fighters out of the Wellness Center in Houston, says, “When you think about it from a physiological standpoint, you can make a legit argument that the way we do it is better. Juan’s working on his ninth world title defense; he’s got three belts … we must be doing something right.”

Upper Body Weightlifting – Before his swim on Mondays, Juan has intense upper body weightlifting sessions. He starts every workout with 600 stomach crunches from different angles. Then he begins hammer strength bench presses, combined with high-back rows and pull-ups with weights held between

his feet, all done as a super-set. After that are tricep dips, dumbbell hang-cleans and reverse bicep curls. He’ll finish with 100 push-ups. Caldwell’s philosophy is built around switching the order and type of exercises in these sessions; Juan will sometimes go a whole month before repeating the same workout twice. “You never want his body to get adjusted to what he’s doing. You always want his muscles to respond to what he’s doing,” Caldwell says. “Your

Bodyweight Training – Wednesday’s weight session features bodyweight training. Each exercise is something Juan can do with only his body. He may start with 50 standard push-ups, then do 10 reps each of plyometric push-ups, wide-stance push-ups and hips-elevated push-ups. He’ll rest for a minute and a half, and then repeat the routine. Rest and repeat. Then Juan will do three sets of pull-ups until failure, followed by three sets of hyperextension back exercises.

Lower Body Weightlifting – Before swimming on Fridays, it’s all about the lower body. Starting with three sets of split-stance lunges, while holding 40-pound dumbbells, Juan will transition to three sets of dumbbell dead lifts, adding a calf raise into each rep. Following that might be a “sit-and-squat,” where Juan will stand next to a bench while holding 40-pound dumbbells and do squats until he’s in a seated position before going back up. The workout concludes with two sets of seated leg presses with 400 pounds on the rack.

Cardio and Boxing Skills – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are solely dedicated to cardio and boxing. Juan begins with a five-minute warm-up, followed by abdominal, neck and hip work. Then it’s three rounds of shadow boxing and 12–15 rounds of bag, pad, jump rope and sparring. The day ends with a five-mile Stairmaster session.

The Renzo GRacie Gym bReeds champions. This intimate Jiu-Jitsu basement studio on the west side of Manhattan is a Mecca of Mixed Martial Arts where some of the best fighters in the world train.

In these blue-padded quarters, UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra earned his white belt (beginner’s level) in the Brazilian martial art. He still takes private lessons once or twice a week when preparing for a fight. Former UFC welterweight belt holder Georges St. Pierre learned grappling from masters Hansel Gracie and John Danaher. Legend has it that when St. Pierre first arrived, he squared off with Danaher having never been submitted before. After five minutes, Danaher forced St. Pierre to tap out seven times.

Gracie students Serra and St. Pierre were slated to fight each other for the UFC Welterweight Championship last April. Serra had seniority at the school, so he continued to train under the Gracie Empire while St. Pierre went elsewhere. Three minutes and twenty-five seconds into the battle, Serra won by TKO.

Gracie taught Danaher while he took graduate classes in philosophy at Columbia University at the age of 23. Now they are just two of the eight black belts who teach at the Gracie Academy. Hansel Gracie is a venerable capo in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s (BJJ) most famous family. He defeated five UFC champions in his illustrious career.

“Two percent of the students here are professional fighters,” says Igor Gracie, one of the black belt instructors at the school. “Our students range from seven- to 75-year-olds; everyone from construction workers to lawyers, bankers—people who do this as a hobby. The teaching you’ll find here is world class. You won’t find it anywhere else.”

Through the four levels of courses, students learn the nuances of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. “You start standing up—Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art,” says Gracie. “No strikes—but we do teach how to block strikes, close the distance, clinch and finish. It’s all learning how to control your partner, control your opponent and finish.”
