ChemChina singled out nine teams, recently, including the Bluestar

Technology Application Center, along with eight individuals, including Su Yuelong, and 20 DCS application projects for their profess ional excel lence. ChemChina started the DCS application optimization initiative, in 2012, to respond to the low level of automation and gap between it and international practices. It came up with a 3-step plan: first, increase automatic control usage to more than 80 percent,

make full use of DCS to minimize energy and raw materials waste caused by manual operation, and improve product quality; second, hold automatic control usage above 80 percent, in 2013, make optimal use of DCS control plans through innovation, ensure reliable plant operations and improve plant cost-effectiveness; and third, raise automated controls at all main plants to the highest level, in 2014. The SBUs Bluestar, Oil & Gas Corp, Haohua Corp, and Agrochemicals Corp did a diagnosis,

set PID, made an optimal process and control scheme, and developed a real-time database in accordance with ChemChina’s plan. By the end of 2013, automated control use at main plants was above 90 percent and the level of stability at 80 percent, with 13 real-time databases in place to provide support for quantitative management of operations. A 9-person DCS expert panel was set up, 120 DCS engineers were trained, and 2,066 DCS main operators took part in automated control network training. ■

Changsha Lehigh Institute’s Lop Nor project wins national prize

Aeolus Tire receives national patent of intellectual property China’s first coke oven gas-turned

natural gas plant goes into operation

Th e N a t i o n a l S c i e n c e a n d Technology Award Conference was

held on Jan 10 at the Great Hall of the People. During the conference, the 1.2-million-ton potassium sulphate packaged technology at Lop Nor salt lake developed by the Changsha and Lehigh institutes won first place at the national scientific progress awards.

ChemChina’s Changsha and Lehigh institutes joined hands with SDIC Xinjiang Luobupo Potash Co to carry out research on potassium sulphate production using brine from Lop

Nor’s magnesium sulfate-containing salt lake. They successfully came up with a new process and technology to produce potassium sulphate. They developed technologies for brine exploitation, salt pan mineral collection, and key transportation and processing equipment. Special re search was a l so ca r r ied out to recover kainite and develop t ransportat ion technology and equipment to solve problems.

After running for more than four years, the single-plant production

scale is now the world’s largest, featuring top-notch production quality. The product contains 51.9 percent potassium oxide and a processing recovery rate of 57.54 percent, 67 percent being the ideal in theory. It accounts for 26 percent of the world’s total and takes up more than 78 percent of the domestic market. For the past three years, the project has yielded 3.55 million tons of potassium sulphate, with 4.65 billion yuan ($769.6 million) in after-tax profits and 2.09 billion yuan in taxes. ■

Recent ly, Aeolus Ti re rece ived a certificate of patent of utility model

from the State Intellectual Property Office for its internally-generated portable emergency stop switch engine device technology.

The portable emergency stop switch engine device is easy to use and has now been applied in production systems, with good results. It is a safety device comprised of a group of wireless transmitters and wireless receivers. The wireless transmitters are carried by operators and operated through multiple touch switches. The wireless receivers are mounted in the device’s control circuit, with a circuit alarm system included in the circuit. When an emergency occurs, the operator may press the portable safety switch with their hand or body without having to search for the switch, thus effectively avoiding and minimizing accidents. Meanwhile, after the operator triggers off the switch, the alarm circuit sounds an alarm, and the regional alarm from the central control room reminds other people to enter the site quickly for mutual aid. This patented wireless transmitter is easy to carry, either around the neck of the operator, in the upper pocket or around the wrist. ■

A 30,000 Nm3/h coke oven gas-turned natural gas plant developed jointly by Southwest Institute and Tianke Co was recently put into

operation successfully at the premises of Hebei Yutai Gas Co, producing in-spec compressed natural gas that meets the quality requirements for domestic gas and compressed natural gas for vehicular purposes. This is the first coke oven gas-turned CNG plant ever built in China. The successful implementation of the project opens a new path for the efficient utilization of coke oven gas. It will not only make sufficient and reasonable use of exhaust gas from heavily polluted industries to produce clean energy and drive technological advancement in the coking industry, but also help reduce GHG gas emissions, protect the environment and ecology, and contribute to sustainability.

Given the continued decline in coke prices and environmental pollution, finding a “way out” for coke oven gas has become key to the survival and development of coking companies. Use of coke oven gas to produce natural gas through methanation can recover 20 billion cubic meters of coke oven gas emitted in China each year and produce about 8.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, thus effectively contributing to industrial waste gas utilization, energy conservation and emissions reduction. Given the energy mix in China and the relative shortage of natural gas resources, this technology enables clean and efficient utilization of resources and is an important part of the national energy substitution strategy. The coke oven gas-based natural gas is important to the restructuring of the coking industry and construction of a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly society. ■

Hunan Haohua makes progress in development of cartap technology

Guilin Rubber Machinery’s State-level technical center receives excellent rating

Qingdao Rubber Machinery No 6

Factory’s new-type flame-retardant

polyester material successfully goes into

trial useRecently, Hunan Haohua made

remarkable progress in separation of sulfocyanide isomer of cartap intermediate after increasing the percentage of su l fonated f lu id insecticidal double positive isomer in development of clean cartap production technology.

Producing cartap using sulfonated fluid bisultap positive isomer is an essential part of the development of clean cartap production technology. The separat ion of sul focyanide isomer of cartap intermediate is key to the development of the new process. The researchers screened a series of commonly-used modern separation techniques by finding the slight difference in the chemical and physical properties of sulfocyanide isomer and focusing on the feasibility of separation of sulfocyanide isomer through the reaction process. As a result , se lect ively separated reaction agents were singled out, and the best separation conditions were identified, resulting in good separation results. The yield rate of sulfocyanide isomer exceeded 97 percent, and the percentage of

sulfocyanide positive isomer exceeded 99 percent. Therefore, the process of producing monosultap out of bisultap can be eliminated, and cartap can be produced by producing sulfocyanide out of sulfonated bisultap.

The successful separat ion of sulfocyanide positive isomer marks significant progress towards the development of the new process of producing cartap using sulfonated bisultap, implying the possibility o f increased product ion y ie ld, r educed p roduc t i on co s t s and reduced emissions at the source. The process lays a solid foundation for the development of clean cartap production technology.

H u n a n H a o h u a h a s b e e n implementing an innovation-driven business strategy. Currently, the clean cartap production technology development project has received 2.6 million yuan ($429,785) in government grants, and the company will forge ahead in the fields of wastewater p r e t r e a t m e n t a n d p i l o t - s c a l e production of cartap using sulfonated bisultap. ■

Recently, Guilin Rubber Machinery’s State-level technical center

passed a national assessment with a high score of 80.3 points, the third highest score in the industry and in Guangxi, as well as the highest score ever achieved by the factory.

Over the past decade, the factory saw an upward trend in performance

rating. In this rating, all performance i n d i c a t o r s imp ro ve d s t e a d i l y, especially with respect to three indicators: the number of patents of inventions increased by six over the past two years, R&D spending rose by 0.7 percent and the number of standards to which the factory contributed increased by five. ■

Recently, a new-type flame-retardant polyester framework

ma te r i a l d e ve l oped b y R & D department no 3 of Q ingdao Rubber Machinery No 6 Factory was successfully tested on a conveyor belt.

The research and development project includes the entire process from synthesis of flame-retardant industrial yarn to application of new-type flame-retardant polyester framework material. The factory developed four kinds of new-type flame-retardant polyester framework material and verified their flame-retardant behavior after testing the basic physical propert ies o f the mater ia l s . After that, the R&D department researched canvas impregnation and the matching between rubber and canvas. The department also replaced conventional ordinary framework materials with the four kinds of new-type flame-retardant polyester framework material in the general fire-resistant laminated conveyor belt, flame-retardant steel wire, anti-tear conveyor belt and flame-retardant PVG/PVC conveyor belt. It later concluded that all performance indicators met expectations through small-scale tests and pilot tests of conveyor belts made of new materials. The new-type flame-retardant polyester framework materials not only ensure basic physical properties but also effectively improve the flame-retardant nature of the products.

F lame-retardant polyester framework materials are a hot topic in the industry, and the successful development and trial use of these materials will bring new progress in the field of conveyor belts. ■

Safety needs good habits

ChemChina’s companies have been helping employees develop good

safety habits, with some good results, since 2011, when they started with warning boards near any Haohua Yuhang repair operations, indicating the specific job, possible hazards, and sa fety measures . Pro ject directors and repair personnel would not proceed with repair work until they were absolutely clear about the specific job and signed off on it on the warning board.

Over at the Shenyang Paraffin Chemical Co, they not only helped production staff form good habits but also made tighter controls on every movement in operations. At

the handling area, there are escorts and truck drivers coming and going frequently, so personnel needed to develop a habit of activating the static electricity removers before loading to eliminate hazards caused by static electricity around products on site. Employees would check the weathercock before each patrol to check the escape route in case of a leak of toxic or hazardous chemicals, with the route decided by the weathercock for safety and possible injuries.

Over at Tianjin Petrochemical they created an environment on the shop floor of intense supervision, where personal safety depended on rules and regulations and each employee

complied with the safety policy of their own accord. ■
