Welcome to Social Inclusion Week 2013Focus on Positive Mental Health

Welcome to our annual

Social Inclusion Week

programme. Each year we

use this week to highlight

ways we can collectively and

individually respond to social

inclusion issues in our

community.

This year our programme

focuses on the theme of

mental health and wellbeing.

This topic has been of

particular concern to many

people in Cavan; individuals,

public sector agencies and

community groups. Our

elected members have

shown a special interest in

the issue and it was their

express wish for this year’s

Social Inclusion Week to

have this focus.

You will see that the

programme features events

organised by different groups

to highlight awareness of

mental health, and to help

stimulate discussion and

thinking on a difficult topic.

Activities include training,

talks, exhibitions, workshops,

open days and social events.

We understand the value of

community-based activity

and the need to support

inclusive communities in

which people feel they

belong.

Overall we understand the

importance of being able to

shed light on a topic that is

often stigmatized and hidden.

I urge all services and

support groups to co-operate

with each other to tackle the

challenge of mental health

problems. Working together

we can confront the

challenge of poor mental

health and create conditions

that lead to positive mental

wellbeing.

Last year our theme was

active ageing and I am

pleased to tell you that our

Age Friendly Strategy is

making great progress,

particularly in areas such as

Men’s Sheds, information

provision, recreation areas,

safety and security and the

setting up of the Cavan Older

Person’s Forum.

I look forward to this year’s

events, to learning about this

issue and how we can

support people on the path of

positive mental health.

(TCD), Dip (Healthcare Management).Consultant Psychiatrist with CMMHS,

Senior Lecturer & PhD Fellow with the Royal College of Surgeons inIreland, Mental Health Service

A message from Dr Finian O’Brien,Cavan/Monaghan Mental Health Services

There are various HSE services and community / voluntarysupports for people who may be experiencing mental healthproblems.

People looking for help in dealing with mental health problemsshould ideally always discuss these problems with their GP sothat they can be assessed for the presence of a clinicallysignificant syndrome (eg depressive illness). This is importantbecause if a person is clinically unwell, they may benefit from aGP-co-ordinated care-plan which may include interventions suchas psychotherapy (talking therapy with a trained professional)and medication (if appropriate and if the client agrees). GPs haveaccess to counselling services, psychologists and otherprofessionals such as occupational therapists and social workers,to help people as appropriate.

Social support groups are very useful, but a person experiencing amental health problem may be clinically unwell and may requiremore help to get better than available in a support group. GPs arethe professionals who refer people with depression and otherconditions to secondary care mental health services (psychiatry).Referrals to the specialised psychiatry/community mental healthteam only come through doctor referrals, particularly GPs.

People can stay away from getting help because of fear andstigma around mental health. I would say that mental illness istreatable and people’s quality of life can be vastly improved ifthey seek help appropriately and meaningfully engage withtreatment. Only the most severely unwell or distressed people are
