If all goes according to plan, August will bring heavy �owers to your cannabis plants. Before they begin to strain their stems, it is best to �nd ways to prop up unwieldy branches. A simple way to solve this problem is to put up bamboo stakes and use green tape to tie branches securely. This is also a great time to remove large fan leaves and low branches which will produce minimally. This directs more of the plant’s energy toward producing large, dense and juicy cannabis �owers. Since you have already secured your branches, those gorgeous buds are a luxury you can support!

The chemicals sometimes used in cannabis cultivation could lead to health complications. Although some chemical compounds are approved for use on fruit or vegetables, they are not necessarily safe to use on a product like cannabis which will be lit on �re and inhaled. This is because in the combustion process, often a chemical change can take place. After all, when we smoke cannabis, even the cannabinoid composition of the strain changes, altering THC-A to psychoactive THC during the decarboxylation process. Alternatives to chemical methods of pest or mildew prevention are available. A few great ways to beat these nuisances without doing more damage than good to your �nal product are:

• Bene�cial insects such as praying mantises and ladybugs help prevent all sorts of harmful pests from invading your garden.

• Solarization is a method of using the sun’s heat to protect your crop from many types of insects as well as weeds.

• Remove excess leaves and branches so buds have plenty of air�ow to avoid problems with powdery mildew or botrytis.

• Rain cover is often necessary for outdoor cultivation in Northern California appellations.
