Industry Facts

• The monthly production of denim stands at 30 million yards while the actual demand has nearly reached 60 million yards, To cover this gap, the country imports 30 to 35 million yards per month worth USD 75 million from countries like China, India, and Pakistan, it adds.

• According to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) data, the investment in the denim sub-sector stands at USD 900 million. In 2015, Bangladesh held 22.88 per cent market share in the EU and 11.35 per cent in the US denim markets.

• The global denim industry is estimated to be worth USD 64.1 billion by 2020. Currently, about 1.8 billion pairs of denim trousers worth USD 51 billion are sold annually worldwide.

• Bangladeshi entrepreneurs supply denim products to retailers such as H&M, Uniqlo, Levi's, Nike, Tesco, Wrangler, s.Oliver, Hugo Boss, Puma, Primark and JC Penney. In the last couple of years more than 66 international brands have turned to Bangladesh for denim imports.

• Denim fabric is mainly produced from the open-end (Rotor) yarn. Local rotor yarn manufacturing industries can supply less than 50% of the domestic demand. Slub yarn, core spun yarn, colorants and auxiliaries are fully imported from abroad.
