Executive Summary

On 21st September 2019, PES/IAS joint chapter of IEEE UP Section and IEEE PES student chapter

of IIT Kanpur, jointly organized UP PES IAS Congress with support from IEEE YP at Indian Institute

of Technology Kanpur, India. It was an initiative to connect the IEEE young professionals of Uttar

Pradesh section, to provide a platform to explore the benefits of IEEE YP, PES and IAS. This

congress, first of its kind was a flagship event by the organizing chapter. The vision for organizing

this congress was that “it will unite students, young professional and women in engineering to

explore new and existing ideas, discuss issues in their profession and network”. It was aimed to

provide the confluence of participants with industry representatives and experienced IEEE

leaders during this special event to provide a platform for academia-industry relation and taking

their professions to even greater heights. The event was financially supported by IEEE Young

Professionals, IEEE UP Section, Typhoon HIL Inc. and Tektronix (Convergent technologies India).

The event begins with lightning of lamp and address by esteemed guest Prof Y N Singh, Prof A R

Harish and Prof K V Srivastava. Dr. Sandeep Anand, Chair, IEEE PES/IAS joint chapter of UP Section

addressed the gathering and organizing chair, Mr. Ankit Yadav presented the overview of the

Congress. The event had YP sessions to provide the insights for success in research and life. Under

this YP Session, participant too got the opportunity to represent their IEEE Student chapter during

special session “That’s My SB”. Snapshot of ongoing research in field of power engineering was

presented during technical sessions. The IEEE sessions happened to understand the IEEE

organization and its functioning in details.

The event was attended by participants from different technical institutes of Uttar Pradesh

including IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee, MNNIT Allahabad, REC Ambedkar nagar, REC Mainpuri, IET

Lucknow and many more. Throughout the day, participants got the chance to listen highly

knowledgeable speakers including Prof. J Ram Kumar, Dr. Saumya Ranjan Sahoo, and Dr.

Abheejeet Mohapatra.

Session wise event summary

1. Young Professional Session

A brief introduction of IEEE young profession followed by a motivational video lecture on the

topic “Road map to explore professional success” was taken by Prof. J Ramkumar. In this, he has

discussed the importance of good habits in our life and how it affects the character of a person.

He has presented the seven key good habits which everyone should inculcate in order to achieve

success in their professional and personal life. Second motivational talk was presented by Dr.

Abheejeet Mohapatra on “Joyful Research”. Through this talk, he has tried to summarize the

challenges faced by a research scholar and positive and constructive approach to deal with all

these challenges. Both the speakers had emphasized the importance of professional bodies like

IEEE and IEEE YP in networking and getting updated to the recent changes happening around the

world. Mr. Ankit Yadav, section student repetitive delivered a short talk on IEEE SB, SBC and

affinity groups (like IEEE YP, WIE) formation process, its functioning and reporting of events. He

has presented a detailed step by step process for scheduling and reporting on vTools (L31) and

demonstrated an example of scheduling the event. He has also talked about benefits that a

student member can avail from different IEEE bodies.

1.1 That’s my SB

In order to involve the participants also in the Congress, separate talks under the Young

Professional session, “That’s my SB” were planned. In this participants were given a chance to

present their student branch, past achievements and their future plans to organize more

activities. Six student branches were participated in this. A small token of appreciation was

presented to all the participants for their efforts taking lead role in organizing events within their

respective SB. It was highly appreciated by all participants as well as the audience. List of all the

2. Technical Session

The IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter is continuously providing the scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy to its members. In the same line three technical talks were also organized to keep its participants updated about the latest technological changes happening around the world. A talk on introduction of smart grid, its basic concept and technological advancement happened was presented by Mr. Shiv Kumar Singh. A brief of different tools like LaTeX, MS Word, Mendeley, EndNote, JabRef, RStudio, Inkscape and MS Visio were presented by Mr. Syed Mohammad Ashraf. This talk was focused on giving an introduction of all the available tools helpful in writing and editing the technical paper. This talk was appreciated by all the students as well as the academicians.

3. IEEE Session

In this session four talks were presented by different experts and office bearers of IEEE. The prime

objective of these talks were to familiarize the audience with the organizational structure of IEEE

and its working. Prof. K V Srivastava, immediate past chair of IEEE UP section and vice-chair of

educational activities India council presented an overview of IEEE and IEEE UP Section. In the

same line, Prof. Santanu Mishra, Dr. Soumya Ranjan Sahoo and Dr. Sandeep Anand given a brief


of IEEE IAS, PES and PES/IAS Joint Chapter UP Section respectively. All these talks were focused

on presenting the basic benefits to its members, educational programs, webinars, financial &

technical support, distinguished lecture program, students travel support and chapter awards.

During UP PES IAS Congress 2019, IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter Uttar Pradesh Section has organized

a Social Networking event in parallel with Lunch in Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT K),

Uttar Pradesh. The event, which was scheduled from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM has observed an

overwhelming response and was attended by IEEE members and invited guests. The gathering of

more than 100 peoples includes, IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter UP Section ExCom members, Senior

IEEE Member, Graduate members, student members from different corners of Uttar Pradesh

Section and few non-IEEE invited guests. During the networking, attendees have discussed ideas

of future events, current scenarios of section activities, quality improvement, student branch and

chapter related issues, etc.

Concluding Note

The UP PES IAS Congress 2019 had been conducted successfully with a lot of memories to take

back for its participants. After the closing ceremony and award distribution the certificate of

appreciation was given to all the participants. Feedback were taken from the participants,

volunteers and the sponsors through the feedback link provided by the IEEE YP. In order to

promote the IEEE, ceramic coffee mugs with organizers and sponsors logo on it as a souvenir had

been distributed to all participants. Apart from attendees, it had been distributed to other

individuals, who have extended their support from time to time. Few non-IEEE members, who

attended the Congress and received the gift, have been impressed by IEEE and shown their

interest in becoming member.
