EVENT GUIDE 2014 Julian Evans is the grandson of Lt “Teddy” Evans who was com- mander of Scott’s ship the Terra Nova, having earlier been second in command of the Discovery’s relief ship the Morning. He commanded the last depot-laying station in sup- port of Scott’s last attempt on the South Pole, but like Tom Crean was not selected for the final assault. It was on their return that Tom Crean embarked on a 35 mile solo march to save Teddy Evans life. Like his father the Hon. Broke Evans Julian pays homage to Tom Crean for saving his grandfather’s life Julian is a widely experienced composer, performer and lecturer. He has visited Cape Evans and the Terra Nova hut in Antarctica. One of his musical projects was the creation of an installation of five frozen flutes on the ice shelf at Windless Bight in the Anctar- tic representing the five members of the expedition who died on the way back from the pole. Michael Smith is an author and journalist who specialises in the history of Polar exploration. He has written books on Polar history for adult au- diences and children, lectured exten- sively and contributed to a wide range of television and radio programmes, newspapers, magazines and websites. Michael’s first book, An Unsung Hero – Tom Crean Antarctic Survivor (2000) was short-listed for the Banff Mountain Book Festival 2002. His other books are: I Am Just Going Outside – Captain Oates (2002); Sir James Wordie – Polar Crusader (2004);Captain Francis Crozier – Last Man Standing? (2006); Tom Crean – An Illustrated Life(2006) was shortlisted for the Irish Published Book of the Year 2007. He has also written two books for children: Tom Crean – Iceman (2003); Shackleton – The Boss(2004). Cliff Wedgebury is a London-born, Cork based poet, playwright, perform- ing artist and broadcaster. He released three CD’s of original compostions, including Antarctic Ballads, which featured “ballad of Tom Crean” (2006). His poetry is collected in five books published by Belfast Lawping, the last of which is “A Lingering Adolescence”. He wrote two one act comedies, “OPochcart Peddlers” and “OSelect Accommodation” (2007), both of which the Nenagh Players performed in Doen Mhuire.
