eh in QEJjurrjOn November 28, 1863, Thanksgiving Day was first

observed in the U.S. as an official holiday. President Lincolnhad proclaimed a month earlier that a national holiday wouldbe observed the last Thursday of November. In 1939, PresidentFranklin Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving back a week, tostimulate Christmas shopping. But in 1941, Congress adopteda joint resolution declaring the fourth Thursday of Novemberto be Thanksgiving Day.

NOVEMBER_$GCU$ONTHEFVIL,

2014 Happy Thanksgiving!

Leaves of Gratituden’ DoNNA BRLNNN

WHEN WE PLANNED TO SPEND THANKSGIVING AT MY MOTHER S

ijI place a few years back, I knew my siblings and their spouseswouldn’t be comfortable participating in traditions involvingvocal expressions of gratitude. So I decided to try an ideaadapted from a kids’ craft project.

From brown construction paper, I cut out the trunk andbranches of a tree and taped it to the wall. Then I made leavesout of red, yellow and orange paper. I handed out the leaves tomy siblings, their spouses and their kids, asking them to writesomething the’ were thankful for on each leaf. I told them theydidn’t need to write their name on it unless they wanted to. Thekids were enthusiastic, with most of them scribbling down oneor two items. The adults were reluctant at first, but once theystarted reading the other leaves, they all wrote down at leastone thankful thought. Some leaves had detailed, heartfelt lists, and a few relatives filled more than one leaf!

Several weeks later when I went to visit my mom, I wassurprised to see the Thanksgiving tree still taped to the wall.Iviom told me she enjoyed it so much that she couldn’t bear totake it down.

Self-Esteem and Skin TonesMy shopping trip took an unexpected turn when my son said tearfully, “Me whitelike you.” He had rubbed raw a patch of skin on his arm.

It came out of the blue, though perhaps memories lingered from a raciallyderogatory encounter with a stranger a month before. Whatever the reason, there Istood in the checkout; my adopted son waited to see how I would respond.

“White? I’m nor white,” I said, pointing out my freckles. “I’m pink andspeckled with brown dots.” After I got a giggle out of him, we made up fun namesfor our skin colors: “gingerbread” and “toasted marshmallow.” While he was tooyoung to comprehend fully and have pride in his Native American heritage, thisactivity helped build self-esteem and encouraged him to appreciate differences.

Knowing I needed to make this an ongoing conversation, we later selectedcrayon colors to match our skin tones. We talked about the names on the wrappersand that we’re more than simply one color. We also talked about how every personis made up of many experiences and backgrounds. The importance of each crayonin the box provided a reminder that every person is beautiful and deserving ofrespect! —Shannon Medisky

Please Pass the Everything

Discouraged that dinner with our sons often resembled a feeding frenzy, I deviseda plan. I called the boys for dinnertime and presented a couple of strange rules:

• You cannot ask anyone to pass anything.• You cannot grab anything for yourself. My sweet savages eyed their naked burgers and sat waiting, hoping someone

would offer them condiments. After a fewminutes with no one eating, they had anepiphany! The only way a diner couldget what he wanted was to have someoneelse offer to send an item his way. Theybegan to recognize and anticipate eachother’s needs.

“D’ya want the ketchup?”“Here’s the chips.”“Can I get you some juice?”That was music to this mama’s ears.

Responding with Thankfulness

The secret to keeping two lives beautifully blended comes froin a heart of

thankfulness. It provides a steady stream with which I can continuously refresh

my marriage. When I begin to recognize what my spouse does to bless me, I can

start responding to him in a heartfelt way that strengthens our connection.I do this by verbalizing my observations to my husband: I dwell on the joy

he has given me through his actions, words and personality. I make this intentional response a daily practice because I want no gift to go unmentioned.

It might be a casual reference to how a late-night errand he ran on my behalf

helped me feel secure and comfortable. Or it might be telling him that I love

how he cares about me.The more specifics I recognize, the more I’m able to be truly grateful for

the gift of my spouse. When I respond with thankfulness, I get to pour out the

gratitude that’s shaping my heart, and I’m able to see the bonds between usgrow stronger.

The goal of thankfulness is to connect with a giver. It is not enough to re

ceive gifts and express my gratitude; I must seek the source. When it comes to my marriage, my gratitude is ultimately directed to God.

Marriage is His gift, His reminder of how He is drawing my husband and me

into a relationship with himself. He created marriage, and He is the source of its

goodness. As I take time to connect with the Giver in prayer, I honor Him by cherishing

His gifts. Throughthese prayers, I’mdrawn closer tothe Lord. Indeed,His gifts given tome through mhusband are dailyreminders of myconnection toHim.

Choosing togrow in a spirit ofthankfulness leadsto the most beautiful part of all:

As my life and heart are transformed, my marriage glorifies God. And the joy of

seeing God shine through my marriage is worth the effort of it all.—Janine Petrv

FamilyMatters

I’ve often heard that a parentshould be a coach” to his children.Could you give me somepractical ideas about this concept—especially when it comes to coaching teenagers?

A n s w e 1: Here are several practical tipsyou might find helpful:

• Talk your kids through scenarios inwhich they could face tough decisionsor peer pressure. Help them plan theright choices before they find themselves in those situations.

• Affirm qualities your teen has thatwould make him or her a good husband or wife.

• Be willing to share mistakes fromyourpast without going into too muchdetail; talk honestly about negativeconsequences, pain and lessons learned.

• Take your teen on a one-to-one dinnerdate or ice cream outing; focus onlistening to his or her concerns.

• Have an informal talk with your sonor daughter about relationships, letting him or her know how the opposite

Answers to your questions

sex tends to think and react.• Suggest three or four ways to say

“No” when offered alcohol or otherdrugs. Give your child permission tocall you if they’re ever in a risky situation. Promise that you’ll come and getthem—and not interrogate them whenyou get there.

• Read a short stor editorial, or magazine or newspaper article with yourteen. Then ask his or her opinion.

• Give your child opportunities to gainexperience with hank accounts, creditcards and other financial tools on asmall scale—while you’re there toprovide counsel.

• Do a practice job interview.• Help your teen track how he uses his

time for a week. Then check the resultsand discuss whether they reflect hisgoals and priorities.

• Schedule a time to get away for a fewdays with your teen. Plan both fun activities and relevant topics to discuss.

Answer:

Praying at meals does not change the food; itchanges us. We pray over the food to thank Godfor it and to ask His blessing on those who eatit. Praying at meals reminds us that every bit offood we get comes from God’s hand and that Heprovides everything we need.
