In 1845 the Augusta Canal was built alongside the Savannah River for the purposes of providing

drinking water for the city of Augusta, generating power for war-time industry, and as a transportation route. Today, while still serving its utilitarian purposes, the Canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a major destination for recreational enthusiasts. Active souls looking for a place to paddle, pedal, or hike would do well to pay a visit. In the process, they may just learn a thing or two about the community’s rich history.

�e most popular access point for the Canal is Savannah Rapids Park in Martinez, Georgia. �e 33-acre facility, located just a few short miles from the “town center” of Evans, is a signi�cant attraction for Columbia County and a popular location for active lifestyle participants. �e park features stunning views, unique historic facilities, and great activities for all experience levels.

Paddle sports are one of the fastest growing activities in Columbia

County. Nowhere is this more visible than at Savannah Rapids Park. People with

kayaks, canoes, and Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP) are regularly seen leaving from the dock

located near the Historic Canal Headgates. Access to the Canal is free, but if you need to

rent equipment or prefer a guided tour, there are several great options. �e trip down the Canal

Mountain biking, hiking, and trail running are also very popular in Columbia County. �e Bartram Trail, a well-groomed trail with stunning views of Clark’s Hill Lake, is regularly teeming with two-wheel and two-feet a�cionados seeking an aerobic �x. �e intermediate-level trail o�ers several access points allowing users to go for a quick jaunt or take in a day’s adventure. �e most popular stretch of trail is the 15.5 mile segment between the US Army Corps’ West Dam Recreation Area and Wildwood Park. More advanced riders will also enjoy the Keg Creek trail located across Washington Road from Wildwood Park and/or the trails at Mistletoe State Park with its challenging climbs, creek crossings, and “rooty” and rocky terrain.

A B O U T T H E L A K EClarks Hill Lake (known to our South Carolina neighbors as Lake Strom �urmond) is one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast, boasting over 71,000 acres of pristine freshwater shoreline. Clarks Hill was created in 1951 when the Army Corp of Engineers completed a dam across the Savannah River as a �ood-control project.
