In the United States, we commemorate Veteran’s Day on November 11 and Memorial Day near the end of May, and we celebrate the birth of our nation on July 4. These three dates seemingly don’t have anything to do with each other, and I don’t ever recall any coordinated activities.

The calendar in Israel is quite different. Yom Hazikaron, or Memorial Day, is commemorated on the fourth of Iyar, about two weeks after Passover. On that day, sirens blare and everything stops for two minutes as the country remembers its fallen soldiers. The following day is Yom Haatzmaut, or Independence Day. This day is filled with all types of celebrations, as the country marks the founding of the modern state in 1948.

The fact that Yom Hazikaron flows directly into Yom Ha’atzmaut has always fascinated me. The moods of the two seem so dichotomous. The country goes from a time of mourning and reflection to celebration and frivolity, seemingly at the drop of a hat. I started then to consider the celebration of Passover. One second before midnight we were slaves. One second after we were free. I guess we have done this before.

I know it has been a rough year in our homeland, and therefore I envision something quite somber on Yom Hazikaron. That however will not, in any way, diminish the joy on Yom Haatzmaut. The Jewish people, and especially the Israelis, have faced every challenge and overcome. With Hashem’s help, may it continue until our ultimate redemption; may it come speedily in our days. Am Yisrael Chai.

FROM THE RABBI

Jewish American Heritage Month – May 2016

It very well may still be Pesach when this reaches you even though it’s my article for May, 2016. I again hope Passover was a tasty learning opportunity for you and your family.

Sometimes the ideas for my articles come to me more easily than others. In reflecting back on this responsibility, I want to thank all those who have knowingly and unknowingly stimulated the process. It has been a satisfying task and made more so by the positive feedback received from our many readers. Thank you again very much.

In searching for a theme this month, I learned that May is Jewish American Heritage Month in the United States. Congress passed a resolution and President George W. Bush made it official on April 20, 2006. There is a very informative website with historical references, photographs and stories that catalogue and celebrate more than 350 years of Jewish history and cultural influence in America.

As we do every year following Pesach, we remember the tragedy of the Holocaust, on Yom HaShoah, which begins at sundown on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. We also remember those who lost their lives fight-ing for the right to exist and the protection of Israel on Yom HaZikaron, Israeli Memorial day, which takes place at sundown on Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

There are two joyous days that follow Pesach every year that are very uplifting. Yom HaAtzma'ut is Israel’s Independence Day and is celebrated beginning at sundown on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Last comes Yom Yerushalayim, when we celebrate the 1967 liberation of Jerusalem. It begins at sundown on Saturday, June 4, 2016.

While studying 350 years of Jewish American history, and stopping to mark the somber holidays, as well as the joyous holidays, don’t skip over Lag BaOmer. It begins at sundown on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. In Israel they rally to the triumph of our sustained existence.

The tragedy of the Roman persecution towards Jews engaged in Torah study may be the foundation for how we treat and mark all these contemporary events. It brings to my mind the television cowboy Paladin, dressed in black, a famous mercenary defender of righteousness in the lawless American West. If we Jews are all Paladins our calling card would read “Have Torah Will Travel”.

If you study any further this month, at a minimum, please read the Aish.com article, History Crash Course #67: The Miracle of Jewish History. It ties it all together. We are the miracle, and it is our past that powers our future.

Note: The Hebrew calendar website, HebCal has proven to be a reliable and easy to use resource for all things relating to the Jewish calendar.

Another School Year Comes to A Close… May 1st begins with the Community wide observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Students and Parents are invited to "I Never Saw Another Butterfly", at Temple Shomer at 10:30 a.m.

Our Ohr Chadash Etz Chayim families, students and teachers are invited to a special "Breakfast & Learning on May 8th at 10:00 a.m. To honor our mothers, the topic is "An Ode to Mothers-Lessons from Torah & Beyond." Enjoy bagels, pastries and fruit and learn together. This is a perfect opportunity for our entire Etz Chayim family to join together for study and socializing.

The end of year picnic is scheduled for May 15th. The weather forecast is sunny and nice and warm. Let's meet at Wildwood Park for a few hours of games, hiking on the trails and good food. Meet at 10:00 for fun, fun, fun.

I am very proud of our Ohr Chadash program. We have had many wonderful lessons and programs throughout the year. One of the highlights for me was our Tu B'Shevat seder with our Partnership school in Israel. Other wonderful programs were at Chanukah and the Passover seder. I want to thank Megan, Gina, Rabbi Rubin and Rabbi Lasson for their dedication and innovative lessons and activities with their students.

We may have a small school, although each child and young adult is very special. The teachers encourage values and cooperative learning.

I hope to see many of you at Shabbat services during the summer. Be sure to check your email for summer programs.

Warm regards,

Nancy Jacobson

The Men’s Club wishes to thank everyone who worked on and attended the Annual Kishka Dinner. It was a huge success and a good time was had by all.

The next Men’s Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.

MEN’S CLUB

Yom Ha'Atzmuot - Israeli Independence Day - is on May 12th.

A teacher once relayed a powerful lesson to me and my fellow students regarding the State of Israel. He started by asking: Is the State run entirely according to (Biblical) Jewish Law, like we may imagine it should be? No. Are there strong tensions between different factions of the Jewish People in Israel? Yes, of course.

While a good lineage is prized in Judaism, it is not necessary for greatness. Humble beginnings can portend success just as much. It matters not where you came from, but what direction you take yourself.

Think of a lowly shepherd who - only beginning to study Torah at age 40 - became a prime teacher of the entire Jewish People. His name is Rabbi Akiva. There are other examples of this phenomenon in our heritage.

The State of Israel is definitely not perfect. But it surely is the first step towards the land that will house the Temple and the Coming of the Messiah - may it come speedily in our days. The sheer number of yeshivot and synagogues plus the ingenious agricultural feats in cultivating the Holy Land testifies to this notion. Our top-notch defense force is surely a wonderful gift from Above, as well.

May we celebrate Israel this month, remember and pray for its holy defenders, and realize that we too can rise above and become great - regardless of the situation. Sunday, May 8, 2016—Special Mother’s Day Program—Congregation Wide Ohr Chadash Adult Breakfast and Learning with Rabbi Lasson. The topic will be “An Ode to Jewish Mothers—Lessons from the Torah and Beyond”. Sunday, May 15, 2016—Ohr Chadash Adult Class featuring Rabbi Yechiel Morris of Young Israel of Southfield, MI— The topic will be “Reflections on The Sefirat HaOmer Period”. A continental breakfast will be served.
