    1) In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and

    conventions of real media products?

In the first shot there is a screen grab of our opening sequence title Lost In

a moment we choose this as our title as it leaves our audience with un

answered question in their head e.g. Who is lost in the moment? , What

happens in the moment? And so on. This will lead our audience to watch the

rest of the film so their questions can be answered. The colours black and

read were choose as it s colours normally associated with danger and

mystery which is some of the convention of a thriller.. Also us putting it atthe end of our sequence is quite effective as it is in relation with our last

scene, and also the fact that it is placed on a black background brings more

    focus to the title.

In our second screen grab I have chosen, I am trying to show one of the main

locations we used, which was a lift. It correlates with the codes and

conventions of a thriller as a lift is normally perceived to be lonely and scary

if you are in it by yourself, anything can happened to you, serious incidentscan take place in a flat lift, and this develops the codes and conventions of a

    thriller in our opening sequence.

In this screen grab I choose to show how the characters are introduced. In this scene

which is actually the first scene, both antagonists Valerie and Bianca are both seenwalking together, instantly you can see the bond and relationship between them as you

can see them playing and talking amongst themselves. In this scene I think we challenged

the conventions of a real thriller product as normally there is always a slight tension, dislike or hatred between the characters.

In this screen grab, I am trying to show the special effects we applied to ourproduction, as when we filmed the lighting was much more brighter than

that, we dimmed the lighting. We decided to do this to develop conventions

of a real life thriller as normally mysteries mostly happen when it is darker

    in the day.

In this screen grab I choose to show how we used camera work to Challenge the

conventions of a real media product as this is not typical in an opening sequence of athriller. We used a P.O.V Shot through Valeries eyes to make it clearer to the audience

the emotions of confusion she was going through because of loosing someone elses

child. We got Valerie to hold the camera at her eye level and run down the stairs, thismade the camera unsteady whenshe was doing it, however this was the effect we wasgoing for as it shows the rush feeling that she was going through, trying to find the little

    girl.

    The Lighting was darkened.

Camera work: P.O.V shot ofthe antagonist running downthe stairs.

In this screen grab I decided to show the costumes and props we used in order to complywith a real thriller opening sequence. We had the little girl Bianca dress up in her school

uniform to show her youthfulness, also Valerie is wearing normal casual clothes that a

typical teenager would wear when going to the park with a little girl, this shows a sense

of realism, which develops the conventions of a thriller. The props we used, I think werevery effective, for example the mobile phone- this creates distraction to the antagonist

Valerie which helps build up to the thrilling part of our opening sequence, also it follows

the conventions of a thriller as normally in thrillers when a phone call is received it isusually to distract attention or to receive bad news. The basketball that the little girl

Bianca is holding is also used as a distraction, to her at least, it also creates realism as it is

stereotyped that little children get distracted easily.

In this screen grab, it shows the mystery of our production, in this scene I feel we

challenged the codes and conventions of a real media product as normally in the openingsequence of a thriller the kidnapping doesnt actually happen, it normally comes later on

in the production. I felt this was effective as it causes suspense and tension, and leavesour audience with unanswered questions, which will lead them to watch the rest of our

    production.

    2) How does your media product present particular socialgroups and how does it attract your audience?

Our media production represents particular social groups such as

gender, age and race, which we presented through our selection of

cast. In the beginning the audience should automatically know that thetargeted gender is female based on the fact that both our antagonists

    and main characters are females.

We decided to use a little girl in our production as when we done our

genre research we had noticed that in a number of thrillers a little childwas present, such as Man on Fire, Rush Hour 2, Taken and many

others. So as a group we decided to get involved with this idea and

represent the 8 year old girl in our production as how any othernormal stereotyped 8 year old girl usually behaves.

A long shot of both characters walking

and engaging in conversation helps the

    audience assume that the targeted

audience is female, as they will be able to

    relate to the relationship/bond between

    them.

In this shot it shows Bianca the little 8 year old

girl chasing after her ball, after she had been

instructed to stay were she was. This is a typical

stereotype of how young children behave. Alsoit gives a sense of tension to the audience as it

will make them think whats going to happen to

her during the process of her chasing her ball?

Was there a reason why she was instructed to

    stay were she was?

I have decided to compare our character Valerie Smith with Lisa From Man On Fire as

we gathered some similarities as well as some differences.

    LISA - Radha Mitchell

Lisa is very similar to our character Valerie as they both loose a female child that they

have a strong bond with. They both struggle to look for the little girl. Also they haveboth lost the little child through a kidnap of some sort. The only difference between Lisa

and Valerie is that Lisa is the actual mother of the little girl and Valerie is just a

babysitter to the little girl .

Q.3. What kind of media institution might distribute yourmedia product and why?

Our two minute opening sequence is quite different to usual thrillers,

as we chose to build up tension, shock and capture our audience fromthe beginning, also we wanted to leave them with a sense of mysteryand unanswered questions. When deciding what media institution wewill consider we would have to take into consideration in what type ofmessage and story we are trying to convey and in what way we wantto represent it in order for it to fit into the rules and regulations of thecertificate 15.

We decided to name our production Angel film production, eventhough it doesnt really relate to our genre it was what we thought bestdescribed us, as when making a production we like to please are

audience to the highest standards with no problems just like an angelgives no problems and does everything perfect. In the beginning of ourproduction our logo appears. From the colours of our logo red andblack, we assume that it is clear of what the genre is, as red and blacknormally symbolises danger and mystery which are related to thrillers. The role of our production company is to ensure that our planning andresearch is done properly and to the best of our standards in order toavoid minor mistakes which could prolong things. Also using camerashots and angles like close ups, high angles, low angles and p.o.v shotswhich represent our genre ; thriller. However we also have to ensurethat our editing and distribution is done quite quickly and

professionally as we need to be aware of the codes and conventions ofa thriller but not rushed in order to get our final production Lost In AMoment out to our audience as quick as possible.

What does a production company do ?A production company is responsible for supervising the filming from concept to

completion, and they hold the sole legal and financial responsibility of the movie as a

whole. Understand the job of a production company with helpful tips from an

independent filmmaker in this free video on film.

http://www.ehow.com/video_4872070_what-does-production-company-do.html this is the video that helped me to answer thisquestion.Normally a production company is responsible for different categories of producing and

distributing a media product. They have a look at the production and take many thingsinto account such as cost, access to locations and sometimes find a different method to

raise the funds just incase. A production company can be a small group or an institutionand depending on the outcome, the responsibility and final judgment is based on the work

    of the production company.

The idea of a distributor and who that might be and why ?When addressing how to distribute our production we can do it twoways, we either self-distribute or we could use a company to distributeit for us. If we decide to self-distribute it, thats more work for us but itwill be easier to get it around to our specific target audience, mostly

teenagers, we could make a DVD of it and sell it at a reasonable pricemaybe 5 each, even though it was a low budget film we will need tomake profit. However if we decide to ask a company to distribute it forus, we would like it to be a company that specializes in thrillers such asE4 and channel 4.

In our named titles we decided to put the production crew first, so it goes director cameraman, editor. We done it in this order as this is the order in he way we produced this

production, the director had to come up with a vision make a storyboard and think how

she was going to direct it, then the camera women has to film it, and then the editor editsit. Next up comes the actors, Beatrice Benson, Valerie Johnson and Ade Kadri. We done

it in this order because this is the order in which the characters are introduced into theopening sequence Beatrice first, then Valerie, then Ade. We thought this would be much

easier for the audience to understand.

    4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

From the questionnaires we distributed, we got a lot of good feedbackfrom, mostly from people aged 15-18, this leads me to a conclusionthat Lost In The Moment is more likely to be enjoyed by 15-25 yearolds especially females, I say especially females because it is easier forthem to sympathize with our victim and antagonist as they are bothfemales , female teenagers can relate to the fact that you can getcaught up in the moment and loose concentration easily when your onthe phone, as it is a common stereotype that girls are always on thephone. However I do feel that our thriller Lost In The Moment canattract older people, as parents or even people that arent parents can

relate to how devastating it is to loose your child.Looking at the BBFC rules and regulations we decided to rate ourthriller age 15 certificate as this enables us to follow the codes andconventions of thriller to a larger extent , because from our audiencereview we learnt what codes and conventions really interest ourtargeted audience, it also helps us appeal to a wider audience.

    Name: Rachel Smith

    Gender: female

Age : 18Occupation: student / part time mother

Likes : She likes listening to RnB, hip hop, gospel and mellow rock. She likes to sing and dance in her free

time. A fan of moves of all types of genre especially, black comedy, horror, thriller and action. She also

love to shop as shes into fashion. She shops at places such as Selfridges, HnM, Top shop, River island,

Choice, Primark , New look, Zara and many more. She watches programmes such as Eastenders, Holby

city, Americas next top model and runway model, CSI e.t.c.

Rachel is most likely to be our potential target audience as she is a female and is between age 15 and 25. I

think she will enjoy watching our opening sequence as she is already a movie film and the genre of our film

falls into one of the genres that she likes, so it is thought to be that she would enjoy watching it. Also the

music that she listens to is quite versatile so I dont think she would be too disturbed by ourchoice of score music. Also I think Rachel will be able to relate to our antagonist asshe is a mother of a child of herself and will be able to relate to how it will feel toloose your child.

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I re-uploaded the film onto Youtube and I have annotated the whole film describing whywe decided to do the things we done during our production. It shows exactly what we did

    to attract our audience.

Q.6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

    constructing the product?

During our production I learnt how to use much different software and technologies. Thepicture shown above shows the main technologies we used in the process of making our

    production.

    Apple Mac Computer

During the process of our production I had to learn how to use the apple mac computer as

this was the only computer that we could use in order to get the best quality. It was quitehard for me to use the apple Mac computers as I havent really used one in much depth

before, let alone the softwares I had to learn how to use on it such as:

    Final Cut Pro!

    Apple Mac Computer

    PD Camera and Tripod

Although I wasnt editor and I did not have to be too

familiar with final cut pro, I still decided that I would want to know the basics of how it

worked, just in case anything happened to our editor or I needed to use it in the future foranything.

    Photo shop!

I found this software particularly hard to use as I had neverused it before, however I didnt really get the hang of it till now but I tried to use it to the

best of my ability. I also used a website to help me; the link for the website is below.

    Bubbl.us

As I was the one doing the brainstorm I had to learn how to usethis software. I found it really easy to use.

    Scribd.com

This software played a large part in the process of making our

production, as it made our presentation look neater. It was so easy to use.

    Blogger

This was were all our planning and research was done on. This

software became fairly easy once I got the hang of it.

This software was what we used to broadcast our preliminary

task and final production onto. We also used it for many other things such as title

sequence research, textual analysis and secondary research.

    Facebook

We created a Facebook group so that we could receive direct feedbackfrom our target audience.

The PD Camera and tripodEven though I was not camera women I still had to learn how to use the camera as I hadto film our preliminary task, I found it quite hard to operate the camera and were to place

it in order to get the right shot, as I have never used a camera of that sort before. Also the

bubble in the middle kept moving. The tripod was very easy to use and very convenientas it helped keep a steady

    7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in

the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back to my preliminary task I have learnt a lot, at the time I thought the

preliminary task was a bit challenging and all we had to do was include shot

reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action, which was nothing to compare

with what we had to do for our real production.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy3ANsp4L-I&feature=player_embeddedAbove is the link of our preliminary task that we did and posted it up on Youtube.

During working on our real production I came to learn that with out the right

planning and research it was much harder to complete the opening sequence

effectively. For example in our group, before we done the storyboard, synopsis

and brain storm we were going off track, and this wasted time. As a result of this

we ended up having to review our first idea and found out that it was not going to

work out, this caused us to start all over again.

I also thought that genre research and audience research about thrillers played abig role in the finished production. Well to me as a director it widened my

knowledge about what a thriller was about and what makes it, also audience

research was good as it helped me understand exactly what my targeted audience

liked to see when they watched thrillers. This helped us as a group also me as a

director as it gave me guidance on how to direct the cast on set so that we can

develop, use and challenge thriller conventions in order to please our target

This here is a screen shot from our finished production showing how we combined

both camera work and editing to create match on action. Match on action is a cut

that connects two different views of the same action at the same moment in the

movement. By carefully matching the movement across the two shots, filmmakers

make it seem that the motion continues uninterrupted, just like we did. We filmedit as two different shots but in the editing suite we made it look like we shot it inone go, just like we did in our preliminary.

The 180-degree rule in our preliminary task.

  • 8/9/2019 Evaluation-Victoria Nwaeze 2

    18/18

This is a screen shot of how we made the 180-degree rule work. As you can see

they came through the left hand side of the door and the girl was on the left side

too. As the girl is running towards the door you can see that she is heading towards

the same left hand side door and is still on the left side. This means we paid

attention to what side the camera was on.
