Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies in the process of constructing this product?

Technology What does it do?

How was it used?

Problems? Solutions? Lessons learnt?

Camera Films and records the raw footage. Storing it onto an SD card.

It was used by being turned on, and pressed record.

The camera was very heavy, and at times was tiresome to carry and transport from location to location.

I carried the camera, as I am the strongest, and it wasn’t a problem anymore.

It would have been very useful to get a suitable bag for transporting the camera. This would have made it a lot easier to carry, and would have also protected the expensive piece of kit.

SD Card Stores images/videos (media) on it.

Inserted into the camera equipment, and then into the IMac when transferring media across.

The SD card we were going to use was full and sometimes was quite slow in saving the footage.

I tested my SD card before bringing it to the shoot, and swapped it for my blank ‘SanDisk Ultra 64GB’ card. The high quality card meant that we had lots of space, and it worked extremely quickly.

It is always a good idea, like I did, to check all of the kit/equipment before shooting.

Tripod Piece of equipment that enables a camera to be mounted onto it, and allows the hot head to be moved providing pans and tilts.

A camera can be placed on the tripod which steadies the footage.

A piece of the tripod did actually break at one point. The plate, which was mounted onto the camera got stuck at an angle, and our behind the scene videos shows what happened.

Eventually, I managed to click it back onto the camera.

You must be careful when transporting a heavy camera on a tripod, as it can damage it.

External Microphone The external microphone picks up better quality audio, from a greater distance.

I plugged it in to the external mic. Port, and then turned it on.

The batteries, when turned on, didn’t last a tremendous amount of time.

I brought spares, and kept checking the audio levels.

It is very important to bring lots of spare batteries, and keep checking the audio levels.

IMac The apple mac computers are a

sophisticated piece of technology which allowed us use the FCP software. They also have a large surface area on the screen which allowed our group to watch and edit the video, even if they were not right in front of the screen.

we began to use the software on the mac.

the apple IMacs.

IMacs.

Final Cut Pro Piece of amateur/semi-professional editing software.

Used to edit together all the video clips, images, sound, SFX, etc for our main task.

Some of the other members of my group weren’t familiar with the software.

I showed them a few techniques, and they picked up most of the software themselves. At the end of the post-prod process, we were all very capable in editing the main task.

I have used the software lots before, and did not learn anything specifically new.

Photoshop Photoshop is a piece of software that allows photos to be edited.

I used Photoshop to create our ‘Skyscraper Productions’ logo.

I accidentally saved it as a PSD file, instead of a maximum quality JPEG.

I opened up the PSD file, and then re-saved under ‘save us.’

Double check the file saving format before actually pressing save.

Adobe After Effects Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, and motion graphics piece of software.

I used After Effects to adjust some of the video colour levels that were either a little under, or over exposed.

There wasn’t really any problems, because although I did use this software, it was only for a few clips.

N/A. After effects really improves the colours and is a great way to make adjustments.

YouTube YouTube is a website where you can upload videos online, and they can be accessed by

I uploaded our videos onto YouTube, and then used the embedding links to put it

The videos took quite a long time to actually upload.

We set the videos to upload before our lesson, or straight after, and then went

Make sure you export the video in a format that will upload quickly onto YouTube.

anyone, from anywhere in the world.

into my blog. back at the end of the day.

Blogger A platform to write, and display content online.

I used blogger to effectively present all of the work that I have done online. It made it easy for an examiner to clearly see, step by step, the process in which we created our final video.

The software was often slow, and didn’t always load on our school computers.

I decided to do the work on word documents, or another form of presentation software-e.g. prezi, email it home, and then upload it from my own mac. That way, I worked effectively, and got the tasks done in a smaller amount of time.

Don’t rely on the internet, or other software. Think quickly, and find a solution to the problem in a professional manner.

Prezi Another online site where you can present content.

I did a lot of presentations using prezi. It is colourful, and interactive.

There were no problems with Prezi.

N/A Presenting work in a colourful and interactive form is very engaging to the audience, and would be something that I would use again.
