Question 2
How does your media product represent
a particular social group?
I have chosen two particular magazines which have a slightly similar images to
my music magazine’s front cover model.
Before the photo shoot, I had to plan the costumes, the make-up and the
location where this pictorial will be happening.
I know COSMOPOLITAN is not a type of a music magazine, but I was
inspired by Haley Williams’ look. The fact that her red hair makes her stand
out and the blue polka dot dress emphasizes her beauty, I thought of
applying this look to my model. The red hair also reminds me of the R&B
artist Rihanna which then could link back to its genre.
Hair and Costume
During the photo shoot, my model has done a lot of different poses, but I thought something was
not right. Her poses where too simple and does not really describe an R&B artist, so I thought of
Keri Hilson’s poses. They were very attractive which helped show off her beauty and sexiness to
their audience which is exactly how they are portrayed in magazines. This is the reason why I
have chosen to copy her body gestures and postures for my model. As you can see, Timea’s
pose is very similar to Keri Hilson’s:
Not only their posture and gestures, they are also giving a direct mode of address to their target
audiences to capture their attention in purchasing this article and both in a serious ‘bad girl’ look.
The model’s posture and
gesture
Angle, shot type and lighting
They are both taken from an eye level angle as they sort of look down a bit at the camera (both shows dominance)
They have a different lighting - the picture on the left has a tint of yellow and the picture on the right has a tint of grey/white, but the colors it uses for its background are the same (dark and light blue fading together)
Another difference is its shot type. My model’s picture is shot in a mid close up while on the other hand it’s shot in a mid long shot.
Have I provided them what they
wanted?
I have asked my focus group about their
opinions if I have provided them the things
they wanted in the magazine from our
interview. They have stated one of the things
they have asked me to do which I have
achieved in the magazine...
Maria – Yes, you have made changes of the ‘Top music chart’ where I have asked you to swap the numbers from least popular (10) to the hottest music (1) which helps build up suspense to the readers.
Oleander – You have shorten your secondary cover lines but have also made it sound interesting to appeal readers in reading the magazine.
Adine – She has minimized the size of the music chart and added an editor’s note at the bottom.
Hanna – Most of my suggestion was not applied on the magazine, this is because I think the opinions I have stated would have not fit the music genre. The one points that she has used though is, removing the secondary image of the model between the columns found in the double page spread of the magazine.
How women are portrayed
In this magazine, I have represented women as being dominant. I have achieved this by using bold and stronger colours such as her costume and makeup.
The pose of her head tilted up seems like she is looking down at her audience which again shows dominance.
She is portrayed in this magazine as being alluring to attract not just women but mostly men which makes her the main attraction in getting men to read through the magazine.
