evaluation question 2
TRANSCRIPT
How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
In most media industries there are gender archetypes, which for
female characters consist of:
• Femme Fatal - mysterious and seductive woman whose charms
ensnare her lovers in bonds of irresistible desire
• Loyal Wife – Often seen as the sidekick that is only really there to
help and play on the side-lines.
• Damsel In Distress – This is the victim that usually needs saving.
In my media product I show the female archetype of Damsel In
Distress as she is shown as the victim, alone and being followed. My
product shows the female character as being in need of saving as
clearly she cannot help herself.
This also links to the fact that she is a female in the first place as this
in most cases connotes vulnerability and fragility.
Repulsion – 1965
This movie follows the story of
a beautiful young woman being
left alone while her sister goes
on vacation, which then leaves
her with the ‘demons of her
past’
Fear In The Night – 1972
A young woman recovering from a
nervous breakdown moves with her
husband to a boys' school, but finds
herself being terrorized by a
mysterious one-armed man - and
nobody believes her.
In my media product I decided to present the social group of teenagers. There
were various reasons for this with the first being the stereotypes of this age.
The main stereotypes of a teenager in todays society is a slight naivety and
vulnerability. Again linking to this of the character being a female means that
she is the ultimate victim because of these uncontrollable aspects.
Another reason why I chose to use a teenager is the reason of being relatable.
Even though my target audience research showed that all ages would be
interested I still believed that the majority can relate to a teenage character.
This is because if my film were a 15 then similar ages are teenagers and
people older would have been that age once, so therefore know what its like
even if society has changed.
