I approached my ancillary products as in a Brand due to the whole package being import in the success of a media product. Overall I feel the combination of my main product and ancillary texts are very effective and here are my reasons why;

Page 3: Evaluation Question 2

Firstly I researched the codes and convection's of previous examples of the ancillary products. This then allowed me to greater my knowledge and allowed me to follow a structure on how they should appear and aspects the should include. I also did a lot of research into my topic (Scootering sport) which allowed to understand aspects for this sub genre including stereotypical colors, music and language they use. I feel the impact of the videos online presenting the sport as they gave me an insight into many different aspects such as the language they use, clothing, music and ways brands present themselves. A felt a large part of the brand was too have popular rides who are well recognised, likes and can perform a wide range of tricks. Brands also use similar images such as colour schemes and logos to create a sense of a brand as well as using the same subjects, fonts and tiles. This therefore is creating an identify for the brand. An example of this is the scooter company called MADD gear which used a skull logo which is well recognised.

Page 4: Evaluation Question 2

Throughout all my ancillary products I used the same font for the title (This Is Our Life) to create standardisation throughout my products and too almost create a brand image. This font I used, Neou, I downloaded from an internet website Dafont. Using a specific and distinctive font allows the audience to become aware of it and recognise that it is connected and linked with my other ancillary products.

Same location

I feel my main product connects very well with my ancillary products as all products feature the same locations and subjects as creating a strong brand identity. My audience feedback also recognised this and support that a strong brand identity has been created. This can be recognised by the audience by the distinctive colour and material of the metal ramps and the surroundings. Some audience members may even recognise the graffiti which can seen in both images below. Perkins describes stereotypes as complex and refers not to just a single person. I have represented the scooter riders subculture as being majority males as in all my images and footage only include male subjects.

Page 6: Evaluation Question 2

The colour schemes of the ancillary products are also very similar with a black and white theme throughout. This is therefore reinforcing the brand identity of the products. I also made sure all the information shown matched up correctly such as the channel and time it will be on. My newspaper article is very effective due to the impressive picture I have used. The picture is impressive as the subject is performing a stunt which involves riding on one wheel on a thin platform as well as only using one hand. The expression 'a picture can speak a thousand words' is very relevant due to the picture asking questions to the audience such as; Can tricks be done on scooters?, Will the subject land the trick? and Is that picture taken in my local shopping center? This gives the audience/ viewer many unanswered questions which will persuade them to watch the documentary. It creates an enigma for the viewer.

Page 7: Evaluation Question 2

The content such as the quantity of text is also very minimal to divert the audiences attention onto the image. This is very stereotypical of articles concentrating on extreme sports such as Bmxing, skateboarding or scootering. A few example which I found of this through my research are shown below.

Page 8: Evaluation Question 2

I have also influenced the viewer to concentrate on the main subject in this image by using the rule of thirds and using a light to brighten up the subject. The subject ( Ryan Macnammra) will also be a main subject in the documentary and I have mentioned him within the double page spread. I did not include his name on the newspaper article as he is a very recognised professional within the scooter community.

Using a professional and recognised subject in my products allow a brand identity to be created and can also create publicity for the product. In my newspaper article I have adjusted the text and date of the documentary extract to be in italics, I have done the same on the double page spread to create continuity and standardisation.

Page 9: Evaluation Question 2

My double page spreads connects well with my ancillary products as the main image is of the same subject as in my newspaper article. The show screen shots of where this has occurred photograph is also shot in the same location as the one of the locations in the documentary extract (waterside skate park) which connects the two together.

Page 10: Evaluation Question 2

Within the text in the double page spread I have also mentioned the scooter shop ,ScootNSkates, which is shown and talked about in the documentary extract. The documentary extract also includes footage of the professional rider Kegan Cator who is also talked about within the double page spread. My double page spread also mentions a location called Legacy XS which is a popular indoor skate park which is in Benfleet, Essex. This skate park is shown in the documentary extract. A screenshot of legacy XS in the documentary extract is shown below. In this screenshot the subject is Kegan Cator ( mentioned in the DPS) performing a back flip.

Page 11: Evaluation Question 2

I have also added a QR code to my double page spread. The QR code is a great idea as allows me to benefit from Henry Jenkins idea of convergence which involves ‘the flow of content across multiple media platforms’ and ’the circulation of media content’. The QR code links directly to my documentary extract on YouTube if scanned. I feel this is a very unique and up to date with technology method of connecting the items together. I discovered QR codes are very popular throughout media in this sport such as the advertising of products, this influenced me to incorporate it into my products. I feel the use of a QR code is very beneficial as it is quick and reliable and also influence's the user to spread the link to others on social networking websites which is a very good method of word and mouth.
