EVALUATION: QUESTION 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

Use Conventions

Our product have included some of the conventions that often been used in a romantic-comedy.

We adapted the idea of couple going through a phase, like the film called The Break-up.

•A couple, male and female

•Intervention of a third party

•The third party will try to break them up.

•Good old couple going through a phase.

•Centred around the female character, film is seen from her point of view.

•‘meet cute’ scenario.

In The Break-up opening credits, it started with pictures of their journey of being a couple.

We adapt their idea by showing the couple’s feelings towards each other by simply showing their ordinary life to the audiences. Thus showing the hints of romantic comedy to the audiences.

Develop Conventions

We have also combined a childhood story character Alice from, Alice in the Wonderland to the rom-com that we are filming. That’s a development from the normal typical rom-com.

We developed it by introducing the characters right from the start to tell their story to the audiences. However, it is not a past or memory like the rom-com does but it’s present and Is set in 2 different world.

Fantasy with rom-com.

The introduction of all the main characters in the opening is to give the audiences some hints about the connection between them.

The story/background of Alice will be included as well because we think is important to inform the audience that it’s not the same story.

We also challenge the most frequent convention in a rom-com films and that is voiceover. Almost all the rom-com films have a voiceover to inform the audiences their life or opinion.

But we decided not to have any voiceover at all, as it will make the opening looks rather cheap.

We decided to only put 3 credits in the middle of the opening sequence rather in right at the start where rom-com often starts with a pan shot. This is rather different in rom-com films but it is important to not distract the audience from watching the necessary scene,
