Evaluation Question 1In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Evaluation question 1

For parts of my music video I have followed the characteristics of Goodwin’s principals in my music video. I have included main points such as matching lyrics to visuals which is part of his theory which he believes can be seen in all types of music video no matter what the genres. Throughout my video I have included a standard typography on my ancillary tasks and also tried to include the same shades and house colours as this is easy for the viewer to relate all these products with each other.I have not included other intertextuality of other forms of media in my video as once again I thought this would not be relevant to the smooth flow of my video at present. So for this category I have decided to challenge Goodwin’s principal as I didn’t believe it would be of anything of true benefit to my storyline and narrative concept of travel.

For the use of genre characteristics I have challenged his principal by using a slightly different approach to my music video. By the use of stop frame animation I thought that this would be able to represent the story of travel a lot more effective than anything else. I used the form of a narrative style of video, with the little car in my frames appearing to travel through a house discovering different things while the lyrics match to these images. With my genre of music being Alternative/Acoustic I wanted to create a smooth flowing video that would match the soft style of the music so to do this I added in as much frames as possible at a fast speed which would make the car look like it is moving slightly smoother. The relationship I tried to build between the music and visuals I think was quite successful because I analysed my lyrics and found and thought of ways that I could link in the frames of the visuals to what these words mean. This relates to the principals that Goodwin created as he said in all music videos there are lyrics that match to the visuals; so in this category I have followed his theory once again.

Using the form of stop motion, I didn’t have a main character in the human form. So for the category of his theory which states there are close ups of the artist in all videos which are the dominating shots of music videos. I challenged this by not adding in a lot of close ups to my video of my car as I didn’t feel this would be necessary and it would break up the flow of shots I had already in my video. I have however included a star mage motif to my video and ancillary tasks of a CD cover and magazine advert of the album. By creating this I included in the imagery parts of the little toy car that was used in my video; this helped promote the link of travel that I have been including in all parts of my media. So for parts of it I have followed Goodwin’s principal again.

As Goodwin said in his theory there should be a constant notion of looking throughout the video, I decided to challenge this once again as I didn’t have anything that would relate to my video with the character being a toy car. I didn’t want to just add in some random shots of my eyes or looking either as my style being narrative it was following a story quite smoothly.
