Evaluation -Question 4

Q4): Who would be the audience for your media

product?

Description of audience:

Age = 15+

Musical taste= Rock, Mainstream music

Location= UK readers, like my press pack from Kerrang magazine.

Social Class= Medium class people, average wages, like the press packs from the Kerrang magazine

Gender= Males and Females like the press packs from Kerrang magazine.

Ethnicity= the ethnicity could be anything, for example; British

How do you know?• I know about what my average target audience profile would be like

from research that I had previously carried out about what they expect to see, what they’re interested in and I have referred to my case studies and other processional music magazines and their press packs to see who reads them more, why and how it can change for my own magazine to develop and produce it differently to other professional music magazines like vibe, nme etc.

Typical audience profile:

Press Pack for Velvet magazine:

Ethnicity:70% = British30% = Other

Who’s on your cover? Does it attract the audience type?• On my cover my cover star is a 19yr old singer who

just released a song charted with the most number ones of the month. It attracts my audience because they would want to see this artist from her new known songs. Her age is a typical teenage singer age and she is not too old or to young so my target audience would prefer to see something like this on the front cover of velvet magazine.

EVALUATION -QUESTION 5

Q5): How did you attract/address your audience?

Class Discussions

• In my class discussions I made a presentation to the class about what conventions I would use to help attract address my audience like sponsors, free items, the cover star starring at the camera, Q+A, pull quotes etc. All of this was discussed in terms of whether I should use them or not and how I should use them in an effective appropriate way for my target audience.

Focus Groups:

• In the focus groups I discussed if the conventions used was placed properly in proportion to the other conventions used, I gained advice from 5-6 members of my class in order to develop my magazine as they are the sort of people that would read my magazine.

Comments on blog• The comments on my blog were very useful and helped me to change small things to make my media

product exceptionally of good quality. My comments varied from:

• “The font, colour and size of the masthead is good but you should have put her head in front of the text. Also I like that it doesn't have too many cover lines, it's simple but eye catching at the same.”

• “Very nice magazine; your magazine has a clear 'elegant' feel to it. The colour scheme you have used really contrast with each other well. You have all the conventions needed for a magazine.

As an improvement, I think you could improve the quality of the contents page; for example the white blocks look like they are just there... and the ones especially separating Regulars and Editors Notes look like they're a different size.”

• “your front page is excellent , the fonts used are world class including the layout however what is lacking in the front page is creativity but it is still eye catching”

• “I like the overall composition of the front cover. It looks professional and good enough to sell. I'm not too keen on the cover lines; they need to entice the reader a little bit more if you want them to buy it. Other than that its all good bro.”

• “The front cover is really good, I like your choice of colours and the black background really suits the main image.”

• “The front cover is structured very well. Such an amazing magazine, I love how you played with the text sizes for your pull out, it is very noticeable because of the size of the text. The colour scheme is really good and relates with the cover star. The only thing I think that needs changing is the text sizes at the right side of the front cover.”

• “Let me be the first comment to say how awesome your content page is =)Just a few more tweaks in the layout and it will look even better”

• “let me be the second person to comment that your contents page is looking LEGIT!! you have used your colour scheme very effectively plus the fonts used on the text. If i were to make improvements for the contents page, I would change the 'features' since the 'F' is not in capital plus increasing the font size on some texts - especially on the Regulars section, overall, your magazine is strong and good.”

• “I happen to really like your dps. Superb dude!! The columns are a bit squashed together other than that it looks finished. Well done”

• “The DPS of your magazine is looking MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!! The text fonts used is very effective and it gives out an image of 'bad girl' which looks effective with the word 'wild' and the image. The colour scheme is really good.”

Task 7&10

• From my survey monkey the audience feedback I received was very helpful again. I made 10 questions and they were all answered truthfully. They were about the conventions that I had used in my media product and what the target audience would prefer.

• From my evaluations I did I gained information about my final media product and what I could have changed if I had the chance to on the front cover, contents page and the dps. Also evaluating other class member’s work I saw what I could have done to make it look even more professional considering other conventions that other class members had used.

Which specific elements attract or address my target audience?

• Masthead

• Cover star image

• Features

• Pull quote

• Regulars and features

• Editors note

• Other images of other artists in the magazine

• Q+A

Does the mise-en-scene reflect the audience?• The mise-en-scene does reflect the audience because the model is

wearing clothes associate with rock and the masthead ‘velvet’. The makeup is simple; the setting/background is black associating with the dark genre. Which the audience can relate to and understand as being a typical rock artist.

Are your models aspirational? My models used are very aspirational as the pull quote next to them suggests other ways of success rather than the typical winning x factor. They look like they’re wealthy and loving the rock culture inspiring my 15+ audience that these artists can be them if they try hard like them. In my Q+A I have asked a question that relates to the advice they would give to readers and future artists this keeps the audience inspired.

What sort of language targets your audience?

• The sort of language that targets my audience is what they are used to and would understand which is like a mid lexis, slang sort of language nothing taboo or inappropriate. Easy to read for anything 15+. This attracts them as they don’t want to read rude words or words they don’t understand to their intellectual level.

Do uses of fonts, colour, schemes and layouts address your audience? How?

• The fonts and colours I used address and attract my target audience because they are simple colours that often represent the rock genre. Red, black and white mainly which I have included through my media product. The layouts also attract and address my target audience because it makes everything stand out and easy to read in sections rather than everything put together anywhere. The pictures are proportioned effectively, the text and the text boxes.
