Q1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Evaluation Q1

This is one of the first shots in our music video. This shot shows that we have used real media conventions of Indie/folk rock music, as guitars usually appear in music videos for songs in this genre. As a result of that the audience knows that genre it is most likely to be, just by watching the music video.

This screenshot is taken from Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man music video, and it shows a guitar, just like in our music video. This proves the point that the use of guitar is popular in this kind of genre, and it appears in a large number of those.

Narration also accours really often in videos in this genre. This screenshot form our video shows our character that has only just woken up from coma and is searching for his own identity. Narrations like this are common in this type of music,

because music in this genre tends to focus on individuals and their feelings towards different issues and different events that took place in their lives.

This image is taken from Ed Sheeran ‘Give Me Love’ video. This is a proof that we have used a real media product convention, because this video, and many others also hove similar narration to the one we have done.

Lip syncing accours in music videos of all different genres, and we have used this convention too. This image from our music video shows our artist preforming the song in one of the locations, but we have used more then one in our music video.

This shows the singer out of Paramore lip syncing the lyrics to ‘crushcruchcrush’. Although this is a different music genre, lip syncing appears in this video too, so it proves the point I have made above.

The costume we have used also uses real media conventions and this is because indie/folk rock performers usually were fashionable, but casual clothes, just like ones our character is wearing. This shows the individuality of the performer, and the fact that although we use indie music

conventions, those very a lot from, for example, costumes in pop music videos, as in those the performers are usually dresses in a glamorous way, not casually, to show their popularity and fame. Furthermore this portraits that out character is normal and ordinary just like his audience, and that allows his fans to identify with him and his star persona.

This is the part where our use of cuting on the beat is the most obvious. Editing on the beat is used in most of music videos that now come out, so this is another example of our use of real media convictions.

Conclusion.

Our music video uses a lot of typical music video conventions, as well as genre related conventions. I think our use of conventions was successful, and therefore the music video itself is therefore successful, and well in the genre.

This is the digipak I have done to go along our music video. One of the important conventions we have used is having a motif that links the digipak with the video such as the location and brown and green colours used on the album cover font. Use of guitar is also quite important as it is popular in the genre, but also because guitar appears a lot throughout our music video. Things such as the copyright notice, barcode and Atlantic Records label are also important and used in all of product such as this one.

This is the magazine advert I have done for our music video. This partly challenges the real media conventions for magazine adverts, because I have not added logos of shops such as HMV or Itunes, where this song might be available. I have done this because I wanted the advert to be clear and to the point. It has some other basic conventions such as the name of the artist, single title, when its out etc. I have seen examples of magazine adverts such us this one e.g. ‘Love is noise’ by The Verve, but this is not too common, so It challenges some of the conventions, but not others.
