1. EVALUATION OF MUSIC MAGAZINE Madelaine Gee 2. F R O N T P A G E 3. C O N T E N T S P A G E 4. Double Page Spread 5. QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOU MEDIA PRODUCT DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS? 6. QUESTION 2: HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? http://prezi.com/inawoioucx75/?utm_campaign=share&utm_me dium=copy (In separate file on blog) 7. QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY? The media institution that I would want to produce my magazine would be Bauer Media. They are a European based institution that already produces both Kerrang! and Q As well as this they manage a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. This large amount of distributional services will mean good advertisement, leading to an increase in sales. They have expanded their existing magazines into TV channels and radio stations which would be great for my magazine as it could be more than just one product, for example a radio station for blues news and music. Having such a diverse company distributing my magazine would mean that it would have many different channels to get to the public. Bauer Media usually specialise in Rock and Indie music magazines such as Q and Kerrang! 8. So by having a jazz magazine such as mine they will have more variety which is appealing for them as a company and would be a good reason to take my magazine on. They will get a larger audience meaning an increase in profits. Their experience with promotion and distribution would help me as Im obviously lacking in expertise. As they have an access to TV studios they would be able to aid me in making a promotional video for my magazine which further publicise my product. 9. QUESTION 4: WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0CbTMJdePo 10. QUESTION 5: HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE? Typically, jazz and blues music is most popular with the older generation. However, recently more and more young people have taken an interest due to them learning an instrument like the saxophone at school. As well as this, a lot of schools will have jazz bands available for students in lunch breaks or after school making jazz easily accessible for children. This makes it exceedingly difficult to target one specific audience as the age groups sit on opposite ends of the social spectrum. For the older generation, this genre is the genre they grew up listening to so is of course popular with them. Certain aspects of the magazine appeal to this age bracket such as the features that discuss old jazz musicians either making come backs or having interviews. As well as this, the magazine has advertisements for selling and buying instruments as it could be a place to sell an instrument they no longer play or rekindle their playing and buy a new one. 11. However, the other aspects of the magazine that appeals to the younger generation are the free sheet music and news on up and coming artists. For example the two artists I have created are 18 so they are at a relatable age for the target audience. As well as this, the availability of free sheet music would appeal to a young musician as they would be eager to learn more songs and develop skills. The bright and attractive front cover would attract both types of audience Im aiming to appeal to due to it being simple with a clear layout and short, inviting story lines. As well as this, Blues News makes it obvious what the magazines genre is so should appeal to any person who likes jazz and blues music. Overall, the audience is both young and older people due to the genre of music being relatively malleable to tastes and there are key aspects within the magazine tailored to each audience and in some cases; both. 12. QUESTION 6: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT? 13. QUESTION 7: LOOK BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION IT TO THE FINAL PRODUCT? I used the school name (Priory) and incorporated it into the word priority. This is a rather cheesy and uninventive masthead. When I moved to the music magazine I called a blues and jazz magazine Blues News which is far more inventive and also catchy, which fits well with the masthead criteria. As well as this, the font used is far better in the music magazine and wasnt made on cooltext.com which is where I made the school magazine masthead. 14. The pictures I used for the preliminary task were taken on a video camera and had a very low megapixel. However, the pictures I took for the music magazine were taken on a DSLR camera so are of a higher quality. This dramatically changed the look of my magazine as they made it look more professional. So I learnt to use a better camera to get better quality pictures that show off detail. 15. My skills within Photoshop in general improved dramatically. I went from having next to no understanding of Photoshop (evident in my preliminary task) to being able to help others in my class. A few quick shortcuts definitely helped me in making my magazine look as professional as possible. For example the CTRL + a letter shortcuts were especially helpful in producing my products as quickly as possible. As mentioned in my bubble diagram ain answer to question 6 the use of the quick selection tool definitely came in handy when selecting people and objects and taking them out of their original backgrounds. My first Double Page Spread was done on Word and it meant I had to adapt and try and use different tools I hadnt used before. For example I had-believe it or not- never had to turn the background a different colour and for my initial piece I had a blue background. I eventually decided to do my DPS on Photoshop as there was more available in terms of editing and it gave me more freedom.
