Q7) Looking back on your preliminary task, what

do you feel you have learnt in the progression

from it to the full product?

Evaluation

Preliminary magazine

Final music magazine

Page 3: evaluation

For the school magazine i made the

mastehead appeal to the target audience

by the different colours each representing

groups within the school, this allows the

audience to relate. I used ‘merit’ as this

connotes good behavior, success and

ultimately achieving your overall aim. This

represents my target audience as this is

what they are all hoping to achieve, it is

also positive and motivational which is

what all my target audience need and

want therefore this magazine is carrying

out its purpose by giving them that. The

typography appeals to the target audience

as it is less sophisticated and more

informal by the rough edges. I could of

improved this by adding a strap line

instead of ‘magazine’ something that

For my music magazine the genre is

rock I wanted the masthead to have

connotations of this for example fierce

connotes being unstoppable and

determined. I learnt in order to make

these connotations as realistic as

possible I had to make the typography

and colour to have similar connotations. I

also learnt that the strap line has to

represent the genre also, i attempted to

make it represent fierce by ‘unleash’ as

well as represent that it is a music

magazine. In addition I added an effect

that represents all these ideas the

scratch marks. I could of improved this

by changing the font or changing the

typography of the strap line so its similar

to the typography of the mastehead.

The sub stories in my school magazine are

relevant though the target audience they are

likely to have interest in them, however the

typography used and the positioning of words is

unsuccessful they do not look appealing nor

interesting. The target audience are likely to not

have interest as it looks boring. The black

colour of the writing is overshadowed by the

strong blue background also, this I would need

to improve in music magazine. The puff I used is not appealing the colours do

not complement each other, as well as it would

not engage my target audience they are more

likely to be more curious if there was an offer

available, this also encourages competition.

The sub stories on my music magazine

appeal to the target audience, it engages

them by allowing their input as well as it offers

topics outside of music such as

relationships, this may attract new audience.

From the preliminary I learnt I had to use font

to make certain words more significant and

important as well as use of colour also, I also

learnt that the colours have to complement

each other in order to look appealing. I also

learnt that the background has to allow the

text to stand out, otherwise it looks

unprofessional. I also learnt to appeal to my target audience I

used an offer that is attractive and worth

purchasing for, I also learnt I had to make it

attractive a fit well this is why I used similar

colours to the text and used a banner like

shape.

Preliminary magazine Music magazine

The main image on my school magazine is

successful as the eye contact is looking

upwards this links to merit by only looking

forward on to the future, the shot is also a

low angles shot this makes the model look

more superior. However the image could be

a group of students each belonging to the

different colour groups or this student could

be one of those groups but has made it to

front cover for a merit they have achieved.

The main image for the music magazine

is more successful in comparison I have

learnt to use better techniques such as

dodging and lighting, I learnt I had to

make the model also represent the genre

I have done this by the mise-en-scene

such as clothing / jewellery. I also learnt

the image has to be apart of the

background to do this I blurred the edges

out so its as if she is apart of the

background.

Page 6: evaluation

This is unsuccessful because the magazine name

font is bigger as well as is positioned above the

content, this may confuse the reader what page it

is. The magazine name is emphasized more than

the actual page name content this should be the

other way around. The colours are also similar to

each other this does not distinguish between

then, it also makes it childish which the target

audience would not appreciate.

The image used is not one took this does not

represent my photography skills, the

students that are used do not represent my

target audience as they are similar age my

target audience is 11-18 year olds. Also their

colour clothing does not represent the

different groups of pupils.

Preliminary magazine

Through the preliminary task I learnt I had to

emphasis ‘contents’ more than the magazine name

this is why the font of content is larger than fierce. I

also learnt not to make the colour or typography

similar so the audience could distinguish this is why I

changed the colours and the typography, however I

changed the positioning of fierce and tilted it slightly

this makes the magazine more unique as well as

slightly adding significance to it as well. I also learnt

that the main heading should be bold and stands out

not fading into background this is why I used a bold

red background and pushed the text above it.

Music magazine

I learnt to take my own image so that I can

represent the genre this makes the image more

effective. I have also learnt to appeal to the target

audience by using a beautiful women. In addition I

learnt that the main story needed a main image

this is why this image is fitted across the page and

the page number is larger than the rest, this

signifies its importance.

Page 7: evaluation

Preliminary magazine Music magazine

The stories are very simple, the

stories do not appeal to the

different audiences for example

age groups or gender groups, the

images are childlike also.

Furthermore the positioning of the

text is not consistent it looks

unprofessional, the page numbers

are also are not in straight lines

as well as the typography is not

interesting to the target audience.

I also did not use a date and

website.

I learnt I had to use similar colour scheme as the front

cover this makes the two pages link together allowing

the audience to recognize this magazine. I also learnt I

had to make the interesting story lines typography

different so its more eye catchy also to line up the

numbers in the same way so it looks professional. I

learnt to add stories that would appeal to the whole

target audience not leaving any out so that we do not

lose our audience, also to add website and social

networks to appeal to my audience more. In addition i

learnt that I have to add realistic image to represent

the stories, this makes it more realistic and interesting.

In this magazine I have used the conventions you

expect to see in a music magazine which I failed to do

so on the preliminary task.

Page 8: evaluation

Creating the double page spread was most challenging as I never had experience

writing up a interview that is appealing and interesting as well as tells a story and to

also make it look attractive and engaging as well as making it unique and personal.

However I had learnt through analysis of the different conventions and techniques

to use in order to make it realistic and professional, for example many real

magazines used a quote a powerful image they also divided the page up into two

and had page numbers as well as a website. These are conventions I also used on

my double page spread.
