In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

(TEASER)

Teaser trailers are usually 30 to 60 seconds long- our teaser trailer was 54 seconds long which fits in with the timing

In a teaser usually the film name is given at the end

Gives the audience an idea of what is going to happen in the film

They question the teaser which teases them into watching it to find out what happens

(TEASER)

Horror films are unsettling films designed to: cause fear and alarm frightens and panics us invokes our hidden worst fears

For different types of audiences it can deal with fears such as:NightmaresOur vulnerabilityRevulsionsTerror of the unknownFear of deathLoss of identity

CharactersThere’s always a lead character, that often results as the survivor in the filmThe killer often has a trademark characteristic in the way he kills, for example the people he kills or the weapon he uses to kill themIts usually good against evil, the two characters conflictThe outcome is the good person always survives or defeats the bad guy

Page 4: Evaluation

We mainly stuck to the horror conventions, we had a killer in disguise dressed in a black long jacket and a white mask and held a knife with fake blood on it. We got the costume idea from the movie ‘Scream’ where the villain was unknown to the audience and dressed in black with a mask. The lead character Louise played by Sylvia was getting intruded by the villain (good against evil) and at the end Louise defeats the bad guy but this isn’t shown in the teaser. This satisfies the audience that the good person wins as the movie builds up suspense and tension which most would want to stop at the end and go back to normal where the villain is defeated.

(TEASER)

The effects we used to our teaser were mainly fast cuts and blinks as from looking at other horror teasers we found that it goes to different shot really fast in order to give us a fright

Page 5: Evaluation

Like in ‘Paranormal Activity 2’, ‘The Last Exorcism’, ‘Scream’, the villains are abnormal and weird. In ‘PA2’ and ‘The Last Exorcism’ it has parts of religion and supernatural things to do with the whole situation and this is what we used in ours. Our villain was abnormal with a isolated past where she was detached from the world and acted differently to others when all along she was controlled by the devil through this necklace which she thought gave her powers and words from God. We used the religious theme as ‘religion and religious images play an important role in the success of horror films’ (Douglas Cowan). The villain in ‘Scream’ is shown to be mentally disturbed and irregular and the villains disguise is revealed at the end as in ours .

The location we chose for our teaser was in:Regents parkRegents park estateIn a garage

All our shots were taken at night as it gave more of a gruesome atmosphere. We chose these locations as a park at night is dark, isolated and a detached area and looks abandoned where there are trees and you don’t know what can come at you from different directions which builds up suspense. Same goes for the estate and garage where no one was there and had a empty space and you don’t know where the villain is going to pop out from which makes you jump.

(TEASER)

When looking at the teaser trailer of ‘The Last Exorcism’ we found:The music built up suspense and fright as when playing the teaser on mute it didn’t seem as scary so music is a big part of revealing your genre in a clearer wayThe music played in ‘The Last Exorcism’ was high pitched, sudden beats when something shocking happensThere was a lot of voice overs of screaming, heavy breathing, and talking this went really well as it was clear that the devil was inside the girl and the way it spoke was scary

We decided to use a voice over however not throughout the teaser just at the beginning as we didn’t think it would suit our teaser because there was no talking scene.

We didn’t challenge the conventions of the horror genre as we thought it would be tricky to do so and our audience may not find the genre clear.

(POSTER)

The two posters I carefully analysed were ‘The Last Exorcism’ and ‘PA2’ and the rest I briefly looked atFrom looking at ‘Scream’, ‘The Last Exorcism’ and ‘PA2’ you can see they went against conventions by not having a billing box and ‘Scream’ hardly has any writing on itI wanted to use the codes and conventions of a poster as I wanted my poster to look professional and appeal to my audience

(WEBSITE)

The two websites I analysed were ‘PA2’ and ‘The Last Exorcism’ and I gathered what I liked about it and used it for my website. I stuck to the codes and conventions of having the poster image on the website and just rearranged it.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

Teaser

Font- I used the same font for my poster and website which was ‘sidewalk’ which gave a spooky look to it and relates to my genre however I couldn’t get the same font for my teaser title as this wasn’t available on motion so instead we used ‘distress which also worked well.

Colour scheme- the colour scheme I used was black, white and red throughout however it was rearranged for example my poster had a red background whereas my teaser and website had a black background and the teaser had a red outline around the title.

Imagery- I used the same image for my poster and website of the legs and knife only making it look more mysterious and the blood on the knife emphasises the scary atmosphere.

Language- for my tagline I kept it short but mysterious. Having it short makes it more to the point and scary like in ‘The Last Exorcism’ the tagline was believe in him.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We presented our teaser to the year 12’s, they were given a feedback sheet with various of questions such as ‘what genre would you place this film in?’ and ‘what do you anticipate/expect will happen in the film?’

Positive points made:Knew what the genre wasGreat shots and story lineClear that the necklace has to do something with it

Negative points made:Overused effectsComing soon fades in too slow

We decided to change the overuse of the effects as we all agreed on that and we also found that the coming soon text did come in slow and a bit late and so we had to change this on final cut pro and motion
