What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

EVALUATION 3

ROLE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR• The role of the distributor is mainly to control marketing and distribution of the actual film

(finished product). The marketing process is extremely crucial in impacting on the success of the film as it creates awareness around the film and helps to generate/interests your potential audience. This is mainly done though television advertisement, online campaigns, posters, magazines or general film trailers (online or televised), which are all useful again because they attract the audience for your film, hopefully your target audience would be interested by the advertisement and therefore take a an interest in your film and actually go pay to see it. In addition to this, the advertising of the distributor creates a buzz around the film, causing people to talk about the film and generating more and more interest and awareness around it, which is effective as it increases the size of the audience likely to see the film.

• Films can be distributed by: DVD, pay per view, television rights

INDEPENDENT HOLLOYWOOD

WHICH WOULD SUIT OUR FILM MORE?

‘We need to talk about Kevin’

Distributed by ‘Artificial Eye’: a British film distributor, specialising in foreign-language and art house films for cinema and home entertainment.• ‘Artificial Eye’ is part of Curzon World, a group of companies in

the film entertainment industry which also includes the Curzon chain of seven cinemas plus eight joint venture cinemas, video on demand service Curzon Home Cinema, the retail DVD distributor Fusion Media Sales, and horror film distributor Chelsea Films.

• Artificial Eye releases some 20 new theatrical films and 30 DVD titles in the UK each year, as well as digital releases via several platforms, such as iTunes & Lovefilm and in-house Curzon On Demand.

WHICH WOULD SUIT OUR FILM MORE? (CONTINUED) • We need to talk about Kevin was the main inspiration for our thriller opening and aids me

to believe that an independent film distributors Vertigo Films/Film 4 or even Artificial eye could be suitable distributors for our psychological thriller

Independent distributors because:

• Our film is quite small scale and therefore does not require a large budget. Money would only be needed for things like small scale filming equipment (e.g. cameras and props) and payment of actors, however seeing as there would be few/no famous actors in our film which means that the amount of pay would not be as high as if we had a full all-star cast.

• Lacks intricate, expensive scenes e.g. car chase scenes, shoot-outs. The story line is fairly basic; following the life of a teenage/young adult boy who murders his mother then the story reverts back to the previous month, telling the story of how it came to be that he killed his mother. This therefore means that the extent of the budget won’t be a problem for things like locations as the film is likely to revolve mainly around the house where the murder takes place.
