U S EFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REALMEDIA PRODUCTS Clown character astereotypical horrorfilm character, as seenin Stephen Kingshorror ITBased around and hinted atthe theme of murder and deaththrough titlesTitles create a sense of fearand worry, building up frominnocent headline Excitementbuilds as hit show Cirque comesto town to then the headlinemystery deaths at localtravelling circus, to finallypolice warning stay inside andlock the doorsCircus quite a creepy setting/location as there isthe juxtaposition of its innocence and also relatesto the way things like dolls and children are oftenused in horrorsFast paced editing, fast cuts, thrilling and scary towatch, in conjunction with some slow mo shotsand some quick shots, keeps audience on edgeand interested 4. U S EFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REALMEDIA PRODUCTSMain antagonist/villain the clown, featured a lot in trailer therefore this isclearFast and close up shots of clown isquite startling, especially the shot withthe hand on the door, starts off slowmotion and then the clown suddenlyswings around the door and is a lotbrighter, shocking the audienceCreepy clown costume blowing in the wind, shadows walking - iconographyMan running evokes a sense of fear andthat something is happening, this has alsobeen sped up, making it even more franticand scaryPoint of view shot at the endmakes audience feel as if theyare there, this can been seenbecause of the hand of thecamera holder in the end shot hand held shot, makesaudience uneasy, not surewhats happening and not incontrolComing to a town near youevokes fear from theaudience 5. U S EFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REALMEDIA PRODUCTSSomeone screaming at the end, soundslike theyre in danger, real life soundsSound effects evil laugh to go withlaughing santa puppet, child and womanscreamingMusic changes change in feel of musicas it gets scarier, builds suspense, typicalof a horror trailerBeginning is quite innocent, shots of circus indaylight, audiences walking, upbeat music adisruption of normalityChange in lighting as trailer progresses, gettingscarier 6. Cabin in the woods (2012) 7. Scream 4 (2011) 8. D E V E L O PFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OFREAL MEDIA PRODUCTSMost typical horror film trailers, conventionally, have titles narrating the plot in some way. In ourtrailer we have used this idea but adapted itslightly since our trailer is for an art househorror trailer. We have included newspaperclipping style quotes to narrate the storylineand narrate the trailer loosely. This is quite aunique way of doing so but we have stillincluded the convention of using titles, but haveadapted it to fit our trailers more specific styleof horror trailer. We have also taken the idea of using sound effects but have adapted it to our own specific trailer byoverlaying them with other soundtracks, and also overlaying different pieces of music, to create a wholenew soundtrack altogether. We have made them our own and put our own spin on them. An example ofthis would be the classic circus theme tune which we then overlayed with another piece of more sinister, scary sounding music so that it wasnt too jolly.Havent started with slow paced shots at the beginning as such but have used a variety of quick, fast cutsand shots with slowed down slow mo shots and cuts, and have used music to aid the pace and level oftension. 9. C H A L L E N G EFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OFREAL MEDIA PRODUCTSBecause this trailer is an art-house horror trailer it does challenge quite a few forms and conventions of typical horror trailers:No appearance of any weapons, blood, goreChallenges typical convention of a horror inthat we are only really introduced to the villainof the film and hardly any other characters, apart from the audience which are hinted tobe the victims, and the ringmaster who is alsohinted to be some kind of evil characterNot a very clearnarrative to thetrailer, keepsaudienceguessing quite alot in comparisonto a lot of horrortrailers that let ona lot of thestoryline and plotUnconventional titles in the style of newspaper headlines toadd narration to the trailer and hint more at a plot/storylineTitles are simplistic and quite arty in design, challenging typicalhorror trailer conventionsQuite a lot of colour, usually more darknessin a horror, but this adds to thehecticness/circus feel and art house genreNodialoguefrom anycharacters 10. C H A L L E N G EFORMS AND CONVENTIONS OFREAL MEDIA PRODUCTSFast cuts from the beginning, usually in typical horror trailers there would be aslower build up of longer, slower shots building up to faster, energetic shots tocreate suspenseNo shots of anyone being killed or injured by the clown, not very obvious inshowing to the audience that the clown is a killer, but lots of hints instead, withshots making the clown look evil through close ups, lighting (transition to redlighting in last shot) 11. A U D I E N C E Q U E S T I O N N A I R E S1.Our peers thought that our establishing shots were to light and un-threatening so they suggested that we grade the images so that they aredarker and build on the idea that the trailer is for a horror.2.They said they thought the clown (the killer) is introduced to early on inthe trailer and they think it would be better if he was introduced near theend to create shock, but our best visual shots have the clown in and wereally like using the spinning tunnel at the beginning as we find it quitechilling so we will have to discuss what we are going to do about this.3.They said that they liked how the fast shots were edited but they thinkthat we should use more of a variation between slow and fast. Perhaps aslow cut of the hands round the door in slow motion and then a quick shotof the clowns head close up, this would create building tension thenshock.4.They liked the titles that had been used but they thought we shouldexplain more of the story with them, maybe use reviews as titles or anewspaper cutting with something like mysterious deaths at local circus 27.
