Building for Life is thenational standard forwell-designed homesand neighbourhoods. It is lead by CABE and

the Home BuildersFederation and backedby the Housing Corporation,English Par tnerships,

The Civic Trust andDesign for Homes.

Ths gde wascommissioned andfunded by the HousingCrprats vatand good practice

programme to supporthousing designers anddevelopers in producingwell desged develpmetsad achevg Bldg frLfe awards.

The Bldg fr L festandard is made upof 20 criteria thatembody the partners

vs f what hsgdevelopments shouldbe: functional, attractiveand sustainable. Theseprinciples are basedon government policyad CABE-backedguidance such asplanning policy statement3 (PPS 3) ad By design.

Accurate, informativeand relevant informationis required for thestakeholders to developtheir understanding ofthe strengths andweakesses f a gvedesign proposal and drivether shared vs frwardthrough the developmentprcess. The Bldgfor Life criteria providea valable framewrk thelp planners and fundingbodies assess the qualityof a proposed development.

Recgsg the seflessf the Bldg frLfe apprach, EglshPartnerships requiresproposals for developmenton their land to achieve14 of the 20 criteria atthe tender disposal stage.

The Hsg Crpratalso requires rural andstreet-frted ll

schemes to meet aminimum of 10 of 20criteria, and all otherschemes to meet 12out of the 20.

We have preparedthis guide to help youderstad what kd finformation is relevant to

the 20 Bldg fr Lfecriteria. We have includedexamples of the kind ofmaterial a design team could

prepare as evidence to helpa assessr derstad hwa proposed design is goingto address the 20 criteria.

Bldg fr Lfe assessrswll be appted by thetatves parters ad wlluse their judgement andexpertse t evalate hw a

proposed design respondst each Bldg fr Lfecriterion. These assessorswll prdce a evalat

report to explain theirassessment of proposeddesigns, itemised bycrter. Ths s why t wllhelp if the design team canset out the principles of thedesign approach in diagrams, plans, visuals, models andother material that is simpleand easy to understand.

To create high-quality places, you need a shared visionand partnership approach to development. Working onthe principles of good design can help you achieve this.Good design is not about subjective tastes. It is aboutbeg t fr prpse, drable, well blt ad pleasg tthe eye. A well-desged bldg cmbes fctalty(des t wrk?), rmess (wll t last?) ad delght

(des t lk gd?). Fr CABE ad the Bldg frLfe parters, ths prcple rst adpted by the Rmaarchitect Vitruvius still applies today. Successfullybalancing these objectives does not have to addexpese t the prject, ad t s a effrt well spet.
