    1.2 Function of Modules

    1.2.1 Roll paper supply module

This module holds the large diameter roll paper and guides the paper to the printer module. In thepaper path, there is a shock-absorbing mechanism that can reduce the paper feed load by the inertialforce of the roll paper.

    1.2.2 Printer module

The printer module incorporates the printing mechanism with the paper feeding and cutting mechanismto cut the paper.

    1.2.3 Cut sheet presenter module

The cut sheet presenter module carries the paper that is printed and cut by the printer module to thepaper exit.

    1.2.4 Control board module

The control board controls all functions of each module and has the interface connectors and thepower supply terminals.

The printer with the serial/parallel interface or the USB interface installs the serial/parallel interface orthe USB interface respectively.

NOTES: 1. The printer recognizes the black mark position 0.5 to 2 mm after the center of the blackmark. This value may differ depending on the reflecting rate or the distance betweenthe paper edge and black mark position. Check it with the paper to be used inadvance.

    2. The black mark sensor must be installed in either of the following - face or back of thepaper. The standard position of the black mark is on the right side on the back of thepaper, as shown in Figure 2.2.3.

    3. The reflecting rate of the black mark must be 21% or less, and the reflecting rate of thewhite be 70% or less. The reflecting rate means the value which is measured withMacbeth density meter (PCMII) D filter.

    7) Paper end treatment: Use a roll paper in which the core and the paper are not gluedtogether.

    Figure 2.2.5 Paper Take-up Direction

    8) Surface treatment:

Paper-end mark: When printing paper-end marks on a print surface, the roll paper thatdoes not use ink that affects printing quality or that may damage theprint head must be used.

Coating and pre-print: To coat and preprint on the print face, make sure to specify the typesof coat and ink that are capable of preventing deterioration of print

quality and paper’s sticking to the print head while the printer is left in ahigh-temperature, high-humidity location. Check the printerthoroughly before using the printer, because the level of sticking of thepaper to the print head and printing noise may become high.

The print method using a scratch tape that leaves the coating materialon the surface is prohibited because the material left may adhere tothe paper feed mechanism and cause a machine failure.

    7) Printing speed: Approximately 50 to 150 mm/s {2 to 6"/s}

Approximately 70 mm/s {3"/s} maximum when a ladder bar code isprinted.

Printing speed may be slower, depending on the data transmissionspeed and combination of control commands, temperature, supplyvoltage, or selection of the print density.

    8) Paper feed speed: Approximately 150 mm/s {6"/s}9) Line spacing (default): 30 dots (3.75 mm {0.15"})

Programmable by control command (in increments of 0.125 mm{1/203"}).

NOTE: When the printer to the standby (data-waiting) state during printing, it temporarily stopsprinting and feeding paper. When data is transmitted and printing is executed, paper mayshift 1 to 3 dots from the print starting position, which especially affects bit-image printing.

    10) Other printing functions: Nine types of the bar code are supported.(UPC-A, UPC-E, JAN(EAN)13, JAN(EAN)8, CODE39, ITF,CODABAR, CODE93, CODE128, PDF417) Also, bit image printing is supported.

NOTE: When printing ladder bar code and 2-dimensional codes, bar codes may not be readcorrectly depending on the print speed and/or print density. Select the adequate printspeed and print density and confirm that the ladder bar code and 2-dimensional codes areread correctly.

    2. Note that the print quality may not be satisfactory if the four-part energizing mode isused.

    3. When four-part energizing mode is selected, the maximum print speed is 50 mm/s{1.97"/s}.

3.1.5 Notes on using a roll paper with marks

    1) Due to possible paper slack and/or variations, the starting position of printing may vary byapproximately ± 1 mm {± 0.04"}.

    2) To compensate for a potential error of approximately ± 1 mm in recognition of label lengths, setthe printing area within this tolerance in size (label length − 4 mm {0.16"}).

    3) To print data within the printable area, be sure to send an FF after the data for each label is sent.

    4) Do not use anything other than label rolls with the dimensions shown above. Do not mix labelsof different lengths on one roll.

When DTR/DSR control is selected, the printer transmits data afterconfirming this signal (except when transmitting data by DLE EOT, and GS a).

When XON/XOFF control is selected, the printer does not check thissignal.

NOTES: *1: When the remaining space in the receive buffer drops to 128 bytes, the printer statusbecomes "buffer full," and it remains "buffer full" until the space in the receive bufferincreases to 256 bytes.

*2: If either CTS or DSR signal is ready for receiving data when the DTR/DSR or RTS/CTScontrol is selected, the printer transmits data to the host PC.Please consider this in advance.

3.2.1.6 Notes on setting Memory Switch 1-3 to ON

    1) The printer mechanism stops but does not become busy when: an error has occurred, the platenis open, printing stops due to a paper-end, or paper is fed using the paper FEED button.

    2) When setting Memory Switch to ON to enable handshaking with the printer, be sure to check theprinter status using the GS a command and the ASB function. In this setting, the default valueof n for GS a is 2. The printer automatically transmits the printer status, depending ononline/offline changes.

    3) When using DLE EOT be sure that the receive buffer does not become full.

    • When using a host PC that cannot transmit data when the printer is busy:

If an error has occurred, DLE EOT cannot be used when the printer is busy due to a receive

buffer-full state.• When using a host PC that can transmit data when the printer is busy:

When the receive buffer becomes full while transmitting bit-image data, DLE EOT sent whilebit-image data is processed is considered bit-image data. Data transmitted when the receivebuffer is full may be lost.

Example: Check printer status using GS r 1 after transmitting each line of data and use the4KB receive buffer. Transmit one line of data so that the receive buffer does notbecome full.

    3.2.2.1 Compatibility mode

(Data Transmission from Host PC to Printer: Centronics compatible)

    (1) OutlineCompatibility Mode supports compatibility with the Centronics parallel interface.

    (2) SpecificationsData transmission: 8-bit parallel

Synchronization: Externally supplied nStrobe signalsHandshaking: nAck and Busy signalsSignal levels: TTL compatibleConnector: ADS-B36BLFDR176 (Honda) or equivalent (IEEE 1284 Type B)

NOTE: The letter "n" in front of a signal name indicates active LOW.

    (3) Switching between online and offline

The printer is not equipped with any online/offline switch. The printer enters offline status afterany of the following:

    1) When the power is turned on or until the printer becomes ready for data transmission after it isinitialized by the reset signal (nInit) from the interface.

    2) During the self-test.

    3) When the platen is open.

    4) When the cut sheet presenter module is open.

    5) During paper feeding using the paper FEED button.

    6) When the paper sensor detects a paper end. (*)

    7) When an error has occurred.8) While auto-loading.

(*) The printer goes offline even if the paper sensor does not detect a paper end, when thepaper is ejected in a backward direction by a reverse feed command or by a paper FEEDbutton and a paper exchange (BACK FEED) button simultaneously.

3.2.2.2 Reverse mode (data transmission from printer to host PC)

Status data transmissions from the printer to the host PC proceed in the Nibble or Byte mode.

    •  Description

This mode allows data transmission from the asynchronous printer under the control of the host

PC.Data transmissions in the Nibble Mode are made via the existing control lines in units of four bits(a Nibble). In the Byte Mode, data transmissions proceed by making the eight-bit data linesbidirectional.

Both modes fail to proceed concurrently in the Compatibility Mode, causing half duplextransmission.
