A digital collaborative library of royal manuscripts

Motivation, problem area

• 5 partners, 2 national libraries, 1 state library, 2 academic libraries

• 30 months (January 2010 to June 2012) • Digitise 874 rare and precious manuscripts from the Middle

Ages and the Renaissance (8th to 16th cent.)• Reconstruct digitally collections that have been dispersed• Provide Europeana with heritage content


Project Objectives

• Build a multilingual metadata repository• Produce High-quality content for Europeana• Address both scholars and general public• Gather text and iconographic content

Challenges

• Produce and aggregate metadata in six languages• Cope with 3 different formats + ESE/EDM• Address both general public, school teachers and scholars,

with different needs• Make all content avaliable to Europeana via a global

aggregator

Limitations

• No standardized multilingual format to describe manuscripts in different languages in local and distant systems

• Need to do manual input (with drop-down lists) to DRUPAL• Undoubling of documents in European delivered both in

project and national delivery/harvest• Full surrogates only on local digital libraries• No international standard for iconographic descriptions• Sustainability of project website


Conclusion and outlook

• First content project for Europeana• Useful for harmonization of practices, both practicle and

academic• Highlighting of special needs in digital heritage libraries :

multilingual and standardized formats at different scales• Coordination and mutual improvement of different-scale

libraries
