SOUND MEETS SCENERY.

EUROPEAN MUSIC CAMPUS

Page 2: European Music Campus

Each year the European Music Campus (EMC) gathers hundreds of performers and audience members in Grafenegg to reinvigorate the European ideal of countries working together in harmony. We bring one of the great international youth orchestras together with one of the world’s finest festival sites, and the fruit of this partnership between Grafenegg and the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) is the European Music Campus – a centre for musical excellence and co-creation.

EUROPEAN MUSIC CAMPUS

SOUND MEETS SCENERY.

Sound meets scenery. Located in the heart of Europe, near Vienna, Grafenegg has developed into an internationally renowned festival site in the past eight years and continuously thrills audiences and artists through its unique atmosphere. The impressive open air stage «Wolkenturm», which is embedded into the beautiful park around Grafenegg castle, is considered to be one of the most outstanding outdoor stages with incomparable acoustics. Under the artistic direction of world-famous pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, Grafenegg Festival is one of the major hotspots for international orchestral and musical culture.

GRAFENEGG FESTIVALFounded in 1976, the EUYO brings together the most talented young musicians from the EU’s 28 Member States in an orchestra that transcends social, economic and political boundaries in the pursuit of musical excellence and cultural under-standing. It has provided an exceptional bridge between conservatoires and the professional world for over 3,000 alumni. Developing the unrivalled tradition of its three notable Music Directors - Founding Music Director Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink and Vladimir Ashkenazy - the EUYO recently announced Vasily Petrenko as its Chief Conductor, and Bernard Haitink as Conductor Laureate. The EUYO’s patrons include the Heads of Government of all EU Member States, the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament.

EUROPEAN REALIGNMENTIn the past 200 years, Europe - especially Central and Eastern Europe - went through at least four phases of realignment, which completely changed the political landscape of the continent: after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, after the Paris Peace Conference of 1919-20, after Yalta and Potsdam in 1945 and after the Fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. This Symposium, which is organised by the Austrian-Russian Commission of Historians, focuses on the major political transitions in European politics of the past 200 years. The European Music Campus with its focus on the challenges and possibilities of today‘s Europe, offers the opportunity to take a look back on these major points of European history.

EUROPEAN MUSIC CAMPUS ORCHESTRA (EMCO)Founded in 2014 as part of the European Music Campus, this dynamic young orchestra brings together young musicians from Austria’s neighbouring countries in eastern and south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as the hosting province of Lower Austria. During a 2-week residency, up to 50 talented musicians between the ages of 15 and 19 will have the opportunity to work with EUYO alumni tutors and renowned conductor David Watkin, and to participate in music laboratories and open rehearsals, experiencing life at an international music campus. Summer 2015 sees the EMCO’s public debut in a Prélude concert on 8 August, with works by Tchaikovsky and Mozart.
