BPM ROUND TABLE

The European BPM Round Table is a federation of 21 national BPM round tables aiming to transfer cutting-edge research into new products and ser-vices in the area of Business Process Management (BPM). During the spe-cial meeting of the European BPM Round Table on November 5th 2012, internationally well-known researchers, together with representatives of the companies they cooperate with, pre-sented their joint work. The presenta-tions reported on experiences in suc-cessfully transferring state-of-the-art BPM research results into practical ap-plications. Moreover, important chal-

lenges that urgently need to be ad-dressed by the BPM community were discussed.

Marco Aimar of Opera21 Group SpA and Florian Daniel of the University of Trento discussed the challenges they were confronted with when extracting event data from heterogeneous sys-tems. Such abstractions are crucial for the successful application of process mining techniques.

Several presentations reported on the application of BPM technology and process mining in the medical domain. Yaron Denekamp of Clalit Health Ser-vices and Arturo González Ferrer of the University of Haifa showed the use of clinical decision support in oncology. Stefanie Weber of the Medical Univer-sity of Vienna and Stefanie Rinderle-Ma of the University of Vienna reported on the application of process mining to skin cancer treatment.

Manfred Reichert presented on the impressive results of a long-running cooperation between Daimler AG and University of Ulm. He showed the im-pact BPM research can have on the car industry where processes tend to be complex and highly dynamic. It was a nice example showing the challenges related to “BPM-in-the-large”.

There are currently 21 national BPM round tables. You are invited.

system that supported process mining in a comprehensive manner. Now, Per-ceptive and TU/e are collaborating on “bringing configurable process models to the cloud”. During their joint presen-tation also the new “Perceptive BPM Research Center @ TU/e” was an-nounced. This center is funded by Per-ceptive and aims to support BPM re-search driven by questions from Per-ceptive Software. Hajo Reijers, who also served as chair of the round-table meeting, will lead this initiative. There were also shorter presentations from Rafael Montes of TimeProcess, Oscar Pastor of the University of Va-lencia, and Theresa Schmiedel of the University of Liechtenstein.

Johannes Schwall of PICTURE GmbH and Patrick Delfmann and Mi-chael Rackers of the University of Muenster showed the results from their successful collaboration in the BPM ar-ea. A modeling approach initially devel-oped at the university resulted in a suc-cessful spin-off company that has cus-tomers all over Germany. John Hoogland of Perceptive Soft-ware and Wil van der Aalst of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) presented the results of their cooperation. Various ideas and soft-ware developed at TU/e have been embedded into the products of Percep-tive Software. For example, BPMone of Perceptive Software was the first BPM

among the most cited computers sci-entists in the world). Nevertheless, most of today's BPM software comes from the US. Therefore, there is an op-portunity to turn research results in-to new economic activity. However, this requires support from European decision makers (European Union, lo-cal governments, and venture capital funds). In this spirit, the European BPM Round Table aims to increase the visi-bility of BPM research and its econom-ic potential. For more information on the European BPM Round Table and videos of the meeting visit the website. Also see the interview with Springer and the news article in Cursor (in Dutch).

Overall the meeting was very success-ful. There were 115 attendants, most-ly from industry. The meeting demon-strated the practical relevance of BPM research and illustrated that various round tables spread over Europe are successfully connecting universities, software vendors, consultants, and end-users. However, there is a clear need to lift this to the European level. There-fore, EIT ICT Labs is supporting the consolidation of successful national BPM round tables into a single Eu-ropean BPM round table where expe-riences can be exchanged, knowledge can be transferred, and new initiatives can be initiated at the European level. Europe is clearly leading in BPM re-search as can be seen at the main conferences in the field and the enor-mous impact of the research in terms of citations (BPM researchers are
