Panama Foursquare Pastor and Missionary Dick Scott has spent much of his life creating a written alphabet of the native language for the Choco Indian Nation in Panama. He spent 13 years living with the people in the Panama jungles, where he learned the language, reduced it to writing, and began to provide the Scripture in their language. His next goal was to translate the entire Bible. Now in the U.S., Dick is in the process of updating the Bible manuscript, and has plans to print and distribute the Choco Bible upon its completion. Europe God has opened unique doors for Foursquare ministers among the Romani people, sometimes referred to as Gypsies. This unreached people group originated from the Indian subcontinent and today is widely dispersed through Central and Eastern Europe, Southern France and the Americas. Jeff Roper, area missionary in Europe, says that poverty, discrimination and a host of other problems face the Romani people, and that they are open to the gospel. Foursquare ministers such as Ken and Linda Stapleton in the Czech Republic, Sasha and Marija Vuletic in Macedonia, and Daniel Banu (Roma himself ) in Romania are following the call of God to bring Jesus Christ to the Romani people.

Christians are urged to turn swords into plowshares (see Isa. 2:4), and they can also turn debt into an investment in the kingdom of God, according to Corey (full name withheld for security reasons). For while the burden of repaying school loans keeps some young Americans from pursuing God’s call to missions, it can actually be a springboard to service, says Foursquare’s area missionary to North Asia.

Corey challenges American graduates to consider giving two or three years to teaching English in private or public schools in Japan—simultaneously paying off their loans and helping share the gospel in a nation where less than 2 percent of the 127 million population knows Jesus, and there are just 39 Foursquare churches.

In a young nation, where the average age is 26, Rich and Kirsten Root are investing in tomorrow. Through their El Puente (The Bridge) center, they are reaching students at the University of Santo Domingo. Emphasizing prayer, relationships and service—such as reaching out to prostitutes—the Roots believe their evangelism and discipleship thrust has the potential to “make lasting change” in a country where seven Foursquare churches are part of the 10 percent evangelical population.

Tragedy can leave people consumed with grief by what was lost. Responding to that grief and loss appropriately means helping them find faith and hope for the future. That’s what members of Grace (Camas Foursquare Church) in Camas, Wash., have been doing in helping build an orphanage in Torcelle. Some of the future leaders of the country—where Foursquare has 10 churches—“are being cared for, they are being fed, they are being loved, they are being sheltered,” says Grace team member Debby Flanagan.

Those who dismiss French as just the language of romantic love miss its strategic place in sharing God’s love. Many predominantly Muslim North African countries are French-speaking, notes Daniel Lucero, Foursquare’s national director in France and area missionary for West Africa and the Francophone world. “The door is open,” he says of the Muslim world there, as “opportunities abound” among the world’s 275 million French speakers.

The area missionary’s strategy reflects the kind of table-turning faith needed in a part of the world with huge opportunities and challenges. Encompassing Taiwan, Japan, North and South Korea, China and Mongolia—with a total population of around 1.8 billion—the region includes 11 of the world’s 50 largest cities.

Though steeped in religious beliefs such as Buddhism, many people in this area are open to the gospel, especially in the wake of disasters such as the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Yet the region currently has only one Foursquare seminary, 26 training institutions and approximately 54,000 Foursquare members to meet the needs.
